Some of you know I've spent the past ~20 years looking for ways to apply #AgingBiology to improve health (dramatically). Five years ago, what I've learned drove me to start @GordianBio with @leportfr, as a way to cut through biological complexity. Today we're starting to share
Shouldn’t aging be part of drug discovery for diseases of aging? gordian.bio/blog/introduci… Gordian exists to move therapeutic testing from plastic wells and young mice into a living environment with all the complexity present in patients with age-related disease. We’re now

If you want to build a career in biotech, should you get a PhD after college or join a company directly (as a Research Associate/RA, usually)? There's no single answer, but I have the conversation often enough that I thought I'd share some pros/cons... (1/n)

Thrilled to announce the Longevity #Impetus Grants, $21M+ towards basic research that could accelerate our understanding and control of human aging. We welcome proposals from researchers in- and outside the #Aging field. Please share! More info: impetusgrants.com & this 🧵

A friend of mine just died for no reason other than human bodies are built to fail and we don't know how to fix them. He spent all his time being kind to people, being curious, and trying to make civilization fairer. This is stupid and awful.

(Inspired by a conversation today) If you're excited to help Biotech using AI, keep this chart in mind - the best way to improve cost+time per drug is to reduce risk of trial failure, not to use AI to make a bunch of new molecules.

Biotech is risky and expensive. If it were only risky, hot-blooded entrepreneurs would throw themselves in the fray, falling in droves until one manages to actually make the world a better place. If it were only expensive, silver-haired financiers would gather round long tables

I'm struggling to wrap my head around the new Weissman lab myHSC depletion paper: nature.com/articles/s4158… The first authors don't seem to be on twitter but hoping I can crowdsource a fun discussion. @dbgoodman @ImmunoFever @Jeff_Mold @Satpathology @CalebLareau...

Breakdown and quick thoughts on today's IL11 lifespan paper from @aa_widjaja, @stuartacook1 et al, mainly from an #AgingBiology perspective with a dash of #DrugDevelopment... 1/n
A paper in @Nature reports the ageing effects of a pro-inflammatory protein called IL11 in mice. Inhibition of this protein is shown to improve the health of old mice and increase their lifespan. go.nature.com/3WqC0JX
This is figure 5, which shows that genetic or pharmacologic inhibition of IL-11 extends life expectancy of male and female mice.

It's not a @NobelPrize, but I'm very excited to announce the first batch of Longevity Impetus Grant awardees! As we'd hoped, it's a wide range of projects united by the theme of moving towards an *actionable* understanding of #Aging. 🧵of the projects:

I'm often asked how to learn about #AgingBiology, which I hope this thread can address. Will first list recommended introductory resources, then contextualize and interpret. There's exciting progress! But also many fanciful ideas, so you can't take everything at face value.

Excited to present the latest work from the Longevity Apprenticeship: an overview of age-related diseases incl. data on incidence, etiology, clinical trials, animal models, & more. We hope this will be a useful resource for #aging biotechs and academics 🫴🏽

#SciTwitter After a lot of research and asking around, I'm making the lab equipment recommendations 🧵 I wish I'd had 2 months ago. RT/share with a #newPI or startup 🔬⚗️🛒 Note, much of the equipment hasn't arrived yet, will add comments after actual use.
#SciTwitter I would love hear your favorite models for -20 and -80 freezers (220V fine), shaking incubators, and centrifuges? (Feel free to point me to existing threads). @seemaychou @srikosuri @lexrovner @eperlste @omarabudayyeh @MarcoJost_ @raflynn5 #newPI #NotActually
