- I’ve been asked what I have been doing in last few days so update below. Focus is on supporting people who need it right now - it’s the 3rd year of this & clear there is a need for a actionable plan for coordinating responses, esp when people displaced, transport stopped etc
- Kate Nicholl repostedA 🧵on the "open border" (aka Common Travel Area), with one fundamental point - closing the border between NI and Ireland is not a realistic possibility. @GRobinsonDUP @JimAllister @JonBurrowsMLA @moneillsf @naomi_long @ClaireHanna @JP_Biz @hilarybennmp (1/5)
- Politicians calling for “action” but can’t define what that action is are major red flags 🚩
- There’s no “back door” asylum loophole. The process is the same regardless of route & there’s no shortcut to refugee status. Post-Brexit, the UK also lost EU return provisions that previously applied. So DUP “close the border” narrative is a good soundbyte - but not a solution.
- There is a so-called hit list doing the rounds on social media. I have spoken to PSNI who will be actively patrolling areas and have spoken to several people in these addresses. People of all ethnicities feeling unsettled right now, check in on your neighbours & keep safe 🙏
- The comments on my speech yesterday highlighted some misinformation, which I’ve tried to address ⤵️
00:00 - Violence is never the answer. This morning @PaulaJaneB & I met some residents & business owners in Sandy Row who are understandably distressed. We need de-escalation & accountability - not more destruction.
- Kate Nicholl repostedA very difficult day in North Belfast. Devastation for a family. Neighbours terrified. First respondents traumatised. A city on edge. Police stretched. Minorities fearful. Eerily quiet. Closed. Yet people ready to exploit the pain, fear and suffering for political advantage. Sad.
- My contribution on today’s Matter of the Day about the brutal attack in North Belfast & the need for leadership
00:00 - Kate Nicholl repostedMy thoughts this morning are with the victim of last night's horrific attack in North Belfast, and with their family, the brave people who disarmed the attacker and the PSNI who attended and will now investigate. There can be no place for such violence in our community. >
- Kate Nicholl repostedMany thanks to students and staff from @MethodyBelfast for taking part in our programme today. Thanks also to @KateNicholl and @MatthewOToole2 for meeting with the group and answering Q's. We hope everyone enjoyed the session.
- People I know who marched on Sunday are good people, they are devastated by the genocide & human rights abuses in Palestine. They went in solidarity & peace - those who met them masked & intent on intimidating are a world away from that.
