There’s no “back door” asylum loophole. The process is the same regardless of route & there’s no shortcut to refugee status. Post-Brexit, the UK also lost EU return provisions that previously applied. So DUP “close the border” narrative is a good soundbyte - but not a solution.

My heart breaks for all who have been targeted over the last few days. The number of people who have had their lives, homes, cars & businesses destroyed, & for what? We need investment in our neighbourhoods, we need community integration & we need to remember our common humanity.

This is duplicitous, even by your standards. Trying to portray decisions of the UK Home Office as the responsibility of the Justice Minister is deliberately misleading and dangerous. Where most decent people saw a vile attack, you saw a political opportunity. Utterly shameful.

Moments ago I raised an urgent Point of Order, calling on the Justice Minister Naomi Long to explain how the individual involved in last night’s attack in North Belfast was able to enter Northern Ireland via Dublin in February 2023. The public deserve answers NOW.

I am appalled by the deeply shocking attack in Belfast this morning. My immediate thoughts this morning are with the victim, as well as with the brave people who disarmed the attacker and the witnesses who saw it. Such violence has no place in society.

If the chair heard the outrageous language of the witness then a failure to challenge it is reprehensible. The standards of conduct in committees is very important. Robust debate is positive, but abusive language is totally unacceptable.
