- Can anyone explain why West is not defending Ukraine. EU @Nato go on ad nauseum about being so united re Ukraine. But not defending them. Even delays in delivering promised weapons. Can’t member states make own decisions to defend what is right? @FHeisbourg @thorstenbennerReplying to @FHeisbourgMy understanding is that Poland was ready to transfer old Soviet planes and than made mistake to bundle it together with idea of allowing Ukraine use of Polish airfields for sorties. Stoltenberg shot that down immediately and it seems killed the idea of providing airplanes, too
- Who understands what’s going in Berlin? Don’t ask the @bundeskanzler The muddled, ambiguous statements being churned out about #Ukraine and @KremlinRussia_E is bizarre to say the least. And v disappointing.
- The german passivity is not only irreprehensible. It is culpable. The thousands of men, women and children being killed defies any explanation why @RegSprecher @AuswaertigesAmt @BMVg_Bundeswehr 🇩🇪 does not defend 🇺🇦. Has 🇩🇪 forgotten what it did during world war?Let me put it this way: we Germans have sent once German tanks to Ukraine to commit genocide. 80 years after we have got a chance to send Germans tanks to Ukraine to prevent/stop genocide. Instead of taking this chance and pay our debt, we have decided to finance this genocide.
- What a wonderful honour. Thank you to all my great editors, my great friends and my terrific colleagues. @khalafroula @lionelbarber @RosaBalfour @jan_techau @IVejvoda @alison_smale @IrishTimes#EuropeDay2021 | @Judy_Dempsey, the journalist who covered mainly European affairs for newspapers as @FT and is the editor-in-chief of #StrategicEurope at @Carnegie_Europe, is awarded with the Ernest Udina Prize to the European Trajectory 2021, @APEC_CAT's annual recognition.
- It is patently obvious that🇷🇺 goal is to destroy 🇺🇦. The west must save and arm 🇺🇦 now. This is about future of 🇺🇦 and European security. There is no other choice.
- if you have the time, read @Mylovanov diary. this special Kiev-based economics academic humanist, optimist, wants to restore communities, lives and hope by doing things. His reports from the ground are special. @ZOiS_Berlin @berlin_bridge @meistefan1 @AmbDanFriedStorks are back in Ukraine. We caught them feasting next to a tractor somewhere around Uman on our way from Kherson. In Ukraine, storks are a symbol of rebirth, reinvention, and family protection. Very much what we need in Ukraine now.
00:00 - I completely agree with @KristiRaik Why is it only/always Scholz and Macron? The former has zero crediblity in CEE and lets not in his own country. Why not involve leaders from PL, Baltic States, Sweden, eg.?I don’t share the view that no Western leader should ever talk to Putin. But the way Macron and Scholz are doing it is not just unhelpful, it is deeply counterproductive. A short 🧵
- Happening to our EU's neighbor...meanwhile @NATO sitting in PL and Baltic states, calling it deterrence? Next door, so many being killed, bombed.defies comprehension.#Ukraine In Chernihiv, the Russian bombardment killed 47 people, including 38 men and 9 women. This is a scorched-earth policy that Russians use - they kill civilians, encircle cities. The Kremlin must be stopped immediately. The no-fly zone is needed to stop Russian aviation
- My latest blog: The EU, as a big market has leverage. When it comes to human rights, shld use that clout & not fear retaliation.Democracies can and should pull together. It’s one way of standing up to regimes that use trade as blackmail. @bueti carnegieeurope.eu/strategiceurop…
- this is very important. it matters a great deal. use this instrument. sanctions against the top elite won't change the regime. this could have a big inpact.#Belarus Lithuanian prosecutors launched a pre-trial investigation into crimes against humanity under a complaint by a Belarusian citizen,Maksim #Kharoshyn. It's extremely important.More countries should join and launch investigations under the principle of universal jurisdiction
- Bulgaria isn't in the 'backyard'. Its in the EU and for years @EPP and #Merkel turned blind eye to rampant corruption. Takes @USTreasury to do work @vonderleyen @eucopresident @EPP #OLAF shd have been doing long time ago.One of the very embarrassing EU realities is that the US is better at looking after EU "backyard" than the EU itself. Time for the EU to closely monitor and enforce the rule of law. politico.eu/article/us-san…
- German Ostpolitik before values.“Russia belongs in the Council of Europe – with all the rights and obligations that entails.” – Foreign Minister @HeikoMaas welcomes the compromise reached for Russia to remain in the @coe: “This is good news for Russia’s civil society.”
