OK, I have a confession to make, I’ve been letting my crash reports languish for a while, unlooked at and unloved. But! I finally got my stuff together and have made a bunch of fixes to a few of the most common crashes, along with several more rare ones, and a few common causes of hangs. So, if you’ve been experiencing any crashiness, hopefully this release will help, and if you do still experience any crashes, send in those reports and I promise I’ll keep knocking them down! PowerPhotos 3.4.1 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users.... Read More ›

PowerPhotos 3.4 is out the door, and for this release I decided to focus on one of Photos’ fundamental features: albums. I feel like Apple kind of wishes albums would go away, trying to get people to use their various automated ways of surfacing photos, like Memories, Trips, Featured Photos and all the rest. Don’t get me wrong, some of these features can be handy, but sometimes there’s nothing like good old fashioned manual organization, and I can’t remember the last time Apple actually improved anything in this area. So, PowerPhotos 3.4 adds the following enhancements to what you can... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.6, a free update that’s largely focused on bug fixes and stability improvements. This one was a big one behind the scenes — a lot of the work went into squashing some frustrating crashes and hangs, along with a few smaller refinements to make everyday tasks smoother. Here are the highlights. A fix for unexpected hangs If you’ve ever had PowerPhotos suddenly become unresponsive and force you to reach for Force Quit, this release should make a real difference. While browsing a Photos library in multi-library mode, PowerPhotos could get caught in... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.4, which includes a number of bug fixes along with a new behind-the-scenes feature that should make a real difference for anyone working with large iCloud Photos libraries. Smarter handling of iCloud-optimized libraries If you use iCloud Photos with “Optimize Mac Storage” turned on, you’ve probably noticed that copying or exporting a large batch of photos can cause your library take up more local disk space. That’s because every photo PowerPhotos touches has to be downloaded from iCloud into the library package before PowerPhotos can access it. In some cases, this can... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.2, which includes a handful of bug fixes along with a few improvements to how PowerPhotos handles renaming your photo libraries. A library by any other name PowerPhotos has always let you rename a library in its library list, but that rename only ever applied to the display name PowerPhotos showed for the library — the library’s actual file on disk kept its original name, which could get confusing if you wanted the two to match. Version 3.3.2 brings a couple of welcome changes here. When you rename a library now, PowerPhotos... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.1, which includes a handful of bug fixes along with a couple of new features I think will come in handy. Delete after exporting PowerPhotos has long had a robust export feature that lets you export photos and albums out of a Photos library to a folder on disk. But if you’re exporting photos with the intention of removing them from your library afterwards — say, to archive old photos or free up space — you’ve always had to go back and manually delete those items yourself after the export finishes. Version... Read More ›

PowerPhotos 3.3 is now available, and adds support for Apple’s Shortcuts app for the first time. Shortcuts This new release provides over 30 new actions for you to use in your shortcuts to help you manipulate the photos and albums in your Photos libraries. The actions aim to fill in the gaps not covered by the actions provided by Photos itself, as well as expanding to provide access to PowerPhotos unique functionality. The provided actions let you: Retrieve photos and albums from your libraries, with support for filtering based on properties of the photos/album (e.g. find all unedited photos taken... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.2.6, which includes a number of crash fixes and performance improvements. Performance improvements for iPhoto and Aperture libraries If you have iPhoto or Aperture libraries that you use with PowerPhotos, you may have noticed that certain operations could be sluggish or even cause the app to hang. In version 3.2.6, I’ve tracked down several places where PowerPhotos was doing far more work than necessary when interacting with these older library types. Crash and stability fixes This release addresses several crashes that users were running into in various tasks, including: Trying to do... Read More ›

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.2.3, which focuses on performance and stability, particularly for folks with larger photo libraries. Performance Improvements Library search indexing is now faster, and adding photos to albums during copy operations has been optimized to reduce the time spent fetching photo data from the system. I also fixed a hang that could occur when starting a search in a large library. Quality of Life Improvements A few smaller changes of note: The Find Duplicates browser view can now become narrower, which should help folks on smaller screens who had trouble fitting everything on...
