PowerPhotos 3.4.1 - fix all the crashes!

OK, I have a confession to make, I’ve been letting my crash reports languish for a while, unlooked at and unloved. But! I finally got my stuff together and have made a bunch of fixes to a few of the most common crashes, along with several more rare ones, and a few common causes of hangs. So, if you’ve been experiencing any crashiness, hopefully this release will help, and if you do still experience any crashes, send in those reports and I promise I’ll keep knocking them down!

PowerPhotos 3.4.1 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. If you’re still using PowerPhotos 2, upgrades to version 3 are available at a discount from our web store. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or just choose “Check For Updates” from the PowerPhotos menu to grab it directly.

Full release notes

The button above the library list to remove libraries now, um, removes libraries again. Oops.

Fixed a crash when certain photos are deleted from the library while viewing a photo full size.

Fixed a crash that could occur when browsing a merge preview.

Fixed a crash when selecting a newly added photo in a sorted photo album.

Fixed a hang in the inspector when viewing a photo that belongs to a large number of albums.

Fixed a crash that could occur when dragging items from a library where Photos could not determine the file type (e.g. the photo was missing its file extension).

Fixed a hang when selecting a library with a large number of albums expanded and/or selected in its album list.

Reduced hangs occurring during rapid updates from the photo library, e.g. iCloud syncing.

Fixed a crash when re-running a duplicate search after having removed a library from the setup.

Fixed a crash that could occur after moving or sorting albums.

Fixed a crash when trying to import photos with no embedded date.

Fixed a crash when trying to add a library to PowerPhotos from an unsupported location.

Fixed the “Changing keywords” progress message when batch editing keywords so it no longer says “Changing titles”.

Improved progress display for loading keywords in batch inspector after changing the browser selection.

Changing the selection while the inspector is still calculating the total selected size no longer causes an error message to be shown.

PowerPhotos 3.4 - Album Release Party

PowerPhotos 3.4 is out the door, and for this release I decided to focus on one of Photos’ fundamental features: albums. I feel like Apple kind of wishes albums would go away, trying to get people to use their various automated ways of surfacing photos, like Memories, Trips, Featured Photos and all the rest. Don’t get me wrong, some of these features can be handy, but sometimes there’s nothing like good old fashioned manual organization, and I can’t remember the last time Apple actually improved anything in this area. So, PowerPhotos 3.4 adds the following enhancements to what you can do with albums.

Album list controls: PowerPhotos adds a small row of buttons at the top of the album list to provide easy access to commands for creating, deleting, and searching your albums.

Album list filter: Among these controls is a new search field, which will filter the album list by name. Just type into the search field, and PowerPhotos will show all albums whose name match what you typed, and hide the rest. Even if they’re buried multiple levels deep inside of folders, PowerPhotos will automatically expand all the enclosing folders to quickly surface the matching albums. If you like having lots of albums and especially organizing them in levels, this makes it super easy to find them.

Duplicate Album: This new menu item lets you make an exact copy of an existing album. This works with multiple album selections, and can duplicate an entire album folder, recreating the whole hierarchy with each child album populated with the same photos as the original.

Add to Album: This menu item mimics Photos, allowing you to select or control-click a set of photos then select an album from the submenu to add the photos to that album. Additionally, the “Add to Last Album” menu item will automatically add the next batch of photos to the same album, letting you add a whole bunch of batches to the same album in a row.

Delete Album and Photos: This new menu item will not only delete the selected album, but will also delete all the photos contained in that album. This helps simplify the common dance of first deleting all the photos from the album, then deleting the album itself.

New Folder with Selection: If you have multiple albums already selected in the album list, the “New Folder” menu item will change to “New Folder with Selection”, which will automatically take the selected albums and add them to the newly created folder for you.

Sort Albums: You can now sort a folder of albums by name or date.

Top level “Album“ menu: Now that there are a good number of commands focusing on albums, I organized them into a new top level “Album” menu in the menu bar, to keep the “Image” menu from getting too cluttered.

So just ask yourself, how much more album could PowerPhotos 3.4 be? The answer is none. None more album.

PowerPhotos 3.4 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. If you’re still using PowerPhotos 2, upgrades to version 3 are available at a discount from our web store. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or just choose “Check For Updates” from the PowerPhotos menu to grab it directly.

Full release notes

This release focuses on a variety of new features to help you manage albums in your photo libraries. This includes:

Added a row of buttons at the top of the album list to perform common actions like creating and deleting albums.

Added a search field above the album list that lets you filter the album list by name.

Added new “Add to Album” menu items.

Added “Copy To” and “Move To” items to the contextual menu in the album list.

If multiple albums are selected in the album list, the “New Folder” menu item now changes to “New Folder With Selection” and will automatically add the selected albums to the new folder.

Added a menu item to sort a folder of albums by name or date.

Added a “Delete Album and Photos” menu item that deletes all the photos the selected album contains before deleting the album itself.

Added a “Duplicate Album” command. This will duplicate an entire album, including any child albums contained by a folder, with all albums being populated with the same photos as the original.

Created a new “Album” menu to hold album related commands.

Other bug fixes and improvements

When creating or adding a library, there is now a popup menu in the file chooser that lets you specify a library group to which to add the new library.

Fixed a bug where performing a search with an empty smart album selected would show results from the whole library instead of just the smart album (i.e no results).

Whenever the photo browser is empty, we now display a message explaining why, e.g. “The selected album has no photos” or “The search found no results”

Fixed a crash that could occur while loading photo data.

PowerPhotos 3.3.6 released

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.6, a free update that’s largely focused on bug fixes and stability improvements. This one was a big one behind the scenes — a lot of the work went into squashing some frustrating crashes and hangs, along with a few smaller refinements to make everyday tasks smoother. Here are the highlights.

A fix for unexpected hangs

If you’ve ever had PowerPhotos suddenly become unresponsive and force you to reach for Force Quit, this release should make a real difference. While browsing a Photos library in multi-library mode, PowerPhotos could get caught in a loop that flooded macOS’s photo library service with thousands of rapid-fire connections in just a few seconds — enough to bog down the service to the point where it stopped responding, hanging not just PowerPhotos but Photos itself. I’ve tracked down and fixed the root cause, so that whole class of hang should now be a thing of the past.

Reconnecting iPhoto and Aperture libraries

Here’s a subtle one that tripped up a few people. If you removed an iPhoto or Aperture library from PowerPhotos and then added it back in again, it could appear completely empty — even though all your photos were still there. A restart would fix it, but that’s hardly an obvious solution. The culprit was a stale cached copy of the library hanging around behind the scenes. PowerPhotos now properly clears that cache when you remove a library, so adding it back gives you the correct contents right away, no restart required.

Exporting your whole library, the way you’d expect

It’s always been a little confusing that exporting depended on which list had focus. If you had the album list selected with the main “Library” album highlighted and started an export, PowerPhotos would export just that single album rather than your entire library — not what most people intended. Starting an export with the main “Library” album selected is now treated exactly the same as exporting the whole library, so you’ll get what you expect either way.

Smoother, more reliable exports

A couple of other export improvements round things out. Cancelling or pausing an export while it’s actively running now works properly — previously the cancel button could fail to take effect during the export phase itself. And I fixed a crash that could occur when copying certain photos between libraries, so those transfer and export operations should be more dependable across the board.

PowerPhotos 3.3.6 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. If you’re still using PowerPhotos 2, upgrades to version 3 are available at a discount from our web store. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or just choose “Check For Updates” from the PowerPhotos menu to grab it directly.

Full Release Notes

Fixed an issue that could cause PowerPhotos to hang and require a force quit.

Fixed a bug where if you removed an iPhoto library from PowerPhotos then added it back in again, it would appear to be empty.

Using the “make new album” AppleScript command now returns a reference to the newly created album.

Clarified numbers reported when logging video duplicate matching progress.

Cancelling or pausing an export in progress now works properly.

Fixed a crash when copying certain photos between libraries.

Starting an export with the main “Library” album selected in the album list is now treated the same as if the library itself were selected, i.e. as a whole library export.

If the user has already used the “Contact Support” window to send their logs to tech support, sending logs again will now only upload logs that are new since the last time, saving time and upload bandwidth.

Fixed an issue where sending logs via the support window could fail if they were too large.

When dragging an album from one library window to another, we now copy the album to the position it’s dropped in the album list.

Photos can no longer be dropped between albums (triggering an error), only onto albums.

PowerPhotos 3.3.5: rando bug fixes

I put out a small update today for PowerPhotos, bringing it up to version 3.3.5. This one’s a maintenance release, just a handful of bug fixes that have piled up since 3.3.4. If you ran into any of the issues below, this update is for you.

PowerPhotos 3.3.5 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or check for updates from inside the app via the PowerPhotos menu.

Full Release Notes

Fixed a rare bug that could cause PowerPhotos to stall during a duplicate search.

If PowerPhotos encounters a photo in a library with 0 bytes of data, it now treats that photo as missing instead of trying to copy it and having Photos return an error.

Improved progress display and cancellation responsiveness when analyzing videos for duplicates.

Fixed an issue where converting certain iPhoto libraries would not import any photos.

Fixed a bug that would sometimes result in an error when trying to collect duplicate photos into an album.

There is no longer a short delay between the time you select a photo and the time the inspector pane updates.

Fixed a crash that could occur when restoring the album list display for a library whose album list had changed since the last time it was selected.

Improved updating the photo browser when a folder is selected in the album list and an album is added/removed from it or any of its child folders.

PowerPhotos 3.3.4 improves disk usage when copying from iCloud Photos

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.4, which includes a number of bug fixes along with a new behind-the-scenes feature that should make a real difference for anyone working with large iCloud Photos libraries.

Smarter handling of iCloud-optimized libraries

If you use iCloud Photos with “Optimize Mac Storage” turned on, you’ve probably noticed that copying or exporting a large batch of photos can cause your library take up more local disk space. That’s because every photo PowerPhotos touches has to be downloaded from iCloud into the library package before PowerPhotos can access it. In some cases, this can even fill up your internal drive to the point where the copy/export can’t be completed because there is no more space to download photos or videos.

PowerPhotos 3.3.4 now takes care of this for you automatically. As it copies, merges, or exports photos from an iCloud-optimized library, it keeps track and periodically cleans up the freshly downloaded data as it proceeds. The end result is that you can run long copy, merge, or export operations without worrying about your library growing out of control, and without ever having to manually free up space yourself afterwards.

This release also contains a number of other bug fixes which are detailed below. PowerPhotos 3.3.4 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. If you’re still using PowerPhotos 2, upgrades to version 3 are available at a 50% discount when you enter your existing license key at our web store. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item in PowerPhotos to grab the update directly.

Full Release Notes

Fixed a bug that could cause videos to be missed during a duplicate search.

Fixed a bug where exporting certain photos with the “Replace existing file” option would produce an error instead of replacing the existing file.

Downloading a large file from iCloud Photos during an export or photo copy no longer triggers a premature timeout error.

Fixed a bug where information for the wrong photo would be shown in the inspector for certain combinations of album selection and sort order.

Improved refreshing the photo browser after library changes when we have a multi album selection or a folder selection.

After creating a new album, the new album’s name now begins editing properly after it appears in the album list.

Fixed a bug where editing a title in the inspector could end up continually swapping back and forth between the old and the new title.

Improved error display in all cases where PowerPhotos has been denied permission to use Applescript to control the Photos app.

Copying, merging, or exporting from the iCloud Photos library with “Optimize Mac Storage” enabled will now limit the amount of new data that is downloaded and stored in the local iCloud library.

Fixed a hang that could occur when trying to copy to a library in an unsupported location.

PowerPhotos 3.3.2 released with library renaming improvements and bug fixes

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.2, which includes a handful of bug fixes along with a few improvements to how PowerPhotos handles renaming your photo libraries.

A library by any other name

PowerPhotos has always let you rename a library in its library list, but that rename only ever applied to the display name PowerPhotos showed for the library — the library’s actual file on disk kept its original name, which could get confusing if you wanted the two to match. Version 3.3.2 brings a couple of welcome changes here.

When you rename a library now, PowerPhotos will offer to also rename the library file on disk to match the new name, so you can keep the two in sync without having to switch over to the Finder to do it yourself. And going the other direction, if you rename a library bundle directly in the Finder, PowerPhotos will pick up on that change and automatically update the display name in its library list, instead of getting confused and showing the library as missing. I’ve also fixed a related bug where PowerPhotos wouldn’t reload a library properly after it had been renamed externally.

PowerPhotos 3.3.2 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item within PowerPhotos to grab the update.

Full Release Notes

Renaming a library now gives you an option to also rename the library on disk to match.

If you rename a library in the Finder, PowerPhotos will now automatically update the name shown in PowerPhotos to match.

Fixed an issue where PowerPhotos would not reload a library properly after it was renamed in the Finder.

Exporting with dates enabled now populates additional EXIF/IPTC/XMP metadata fields such as CreateDate, DateTimeOriginal, DateTimeDigitized, DigitalCreationTime, and TimeCreated.

When converting an iPhoto/Aperture library with the scavenging option enabled, the “Scavenged Photos” album in the converted library is now populated properly with the scavenged photos.

Fixed a couple of the built-in duplicate rules that weren’t showing their parameters properly.

Fixed a bug that could cause videos to be missed during a duplicate search.

Fixed a bug where batch editing captions would never finish if PowerPhotos was in full screen mode.

We now show a completion message after applying a batch metadata edit to confirm how many photos were updated.

Using the “Import Photos” menu item to try to import an iPhoto library with no file extension now prompts to add the library to PowerPhotos instead.

Fixed a bug where clicking to reveal a library from a report wouldn’t switch the sidebar to show the library list.

We now show a better error message if the user selects “Limit Access” when prompted for permission to access to photo libraries.

PowerPhotos 3.3.1 fixes bugs, adds post export deletion option

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.3.1, which includes a handful of bug fixes along with a couple of new features I think will come in handy.

Delete after exporting

PowerPhotos has long had a robust export feature that lets you export photos and albums out of a Photos library to a folder on disk. But if you’re exporting photos with the intention of removing them from your library afterwards — say, to archive old photos or free up space — you’ve always had to go back and manually delete those items yourself after the export finishes.

Version 3.3.1 adds a new “Delete items after exporting” checkbox in the export setup screen. When you check this option, PowerPhotos will offer to delete the exported items from the original library once the export completes. If you’re exporting albums, there’s also a second checkbox to delete the albums themselves. And if any items failed to export, PowerPhotos will let you choose whether to delete only the successfully exported items or everything, the same way it handles deletions after a move operation. This should save you a good amount of time if you regularly export and clean up photos from your libraries.

PowerPhotos 3.3.1 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item within PowerPhotos to grab the update.

Full Release Notes

We now show the photo/video count for iPhoto/Aperture libraries in the window title and inspector.

Added an option to delete photos and albums after exporting them.

The “Delete Photos” contextual menu item is now enabled when viewing photos in a report.

Fixed a crash on launch with certain system library setups.

Fixed a bug where the date for some reports would not be shown underneath the report title in the reports list.

The “Add to Album”, “Export”, and “Delete” buttons now appear properly when viewing photos from a report.

Fixed a crash that could occur when the library changes while multiple albums are selected in the photo browser.

Fixed a crash that would occur if you tried to start a merge with no destination library specified.

PowerPhotos 3.3 adds Shortcuts support

PowerPhotos 3.3 is now available, and adds support for Apple’s Shortcuts app for the first time.

Shortcuts

This new release provides over 30 new actions for you to use in your shortcuts to help you manipulate the photos and albums in your Photos libraries. The actions aim to fill in the gaps not covered by the actions provided by Photos itself, as well as expanding to provide access to PowerPhotos unique functionality.

The provided actions let you:

Retrieve photos and albums from your libraries, with support for filtering based on properties of the photos/album (e.g. find all unedited photos taken in the last week)

Create, rename, and delete albums/folders

Add/remove photos from albums

Delete photos/albums

Create new libraries and manage the PowerPhotos library list

Open a particular library, album, or photo in Photos or PowerPhotos

Retrieve and edit photo metadata

Copy/move photos between libraries

Import photos

Export photos

Merge libraries

Take a look at the PowerPhotos documentation for descriptions of each action, as well as a bunch of example shortcuts that demonstrate how to use them.

PowerPhotos already had AppleScript support, and now its AppleScript support has also been updated to support most of the same operations that can be done with Shortcuts (and a few things that Shortcuts can’t).

Sidebar improvements

The sidebar that contains your list of libraries has had a number of changes.

You can now show and hide the sidebar, allowing more room for viewing photos if you wish

The reports list can now be shown in the main sidebar, rather than a second list alongside the sidebar, giving more horizontal screen space for viewing reports

Operations such as merging, exporting, and copying are now pinned at the bottom of the sidebar, so they can no longer be scrolled out of view, making it more clear what operations are in progress.

The buttons for adding/removing libraries and opening Photos are now in a separate row just below the toolbar. This change also provided more room, so there are now also buttons to open a library in a separate window and reveal it in the Finder.

Other bug fixes and improvements

Fixed “Reveal in Photos” not working when viewing the main library album

Editing a saved search no longer autosaves changes on the existing search, instead prompting whether you want to save changes.

Renamed the “Date” subtitle option to “Date Captured” for consistency.

Fixed the “Add to Report” menu item appearing in the contextual menu when it wasn’t applicable.

Fixed a bug where the date property of a photo in AppleScript would be offset by the photo’s timezone.

Fixed a bug where exporting photos via AppleScript would run the export multiple times instead of once.

Fixed a bug where moving photos between libraries would copy them but not delete them from the source library.

Added the ability to save and restore presets for export settings.

Improved progress display during the early stages of an export operation.

Improved performance during the early stages of large export operations.

Improved progress display during preflight stage for large merges and copies.

Fixed a crash that could occur when loading certain libraries.

Added icons to contextual menu items in the library list and album list.

We now show a warning when trying to merge a large number of libraries suggesting it be done in smaller batches.

PowerPhotos 3.3 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item if you already have PowerPhotos installed.

PowerPhotos 3.2.6 fixes a few crashes and hangs

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.2.6, which includes a number of crash fixes and performance improvements.

Performance improvements for iPhoto and Aperture libraries

If you have iPhoto or Aperture libraries that you use with PowerPhotos, you may have noticed that certain operations could be sluggish or even cause the app to hang. In version 3.2.6, I’ve tracked down several places where PowerPhotos was doing far more work than necessary when interacting with these older library types.

Crash and stability fixes

This release addresses several crashes that users were running into in various tasks, including:

Trying to do a multi-library search.

After adding a library to PowerPhotos that couldn’t be added, such as one on an unsupported drive format.

Browsing search results.

Selecting an album in an iPhoto or Aperture library.

Other fixes

There’s also a fix that would cause hang selecting a large number of photos in the photo browser, and a bug that would prevent the inspector from showing info for a photo selected in the duplicate browser.

PowerPhotos 3.2.6 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item if you already have PowerPhotos installed.

Full Release Notes

Fixed a hanging issue when selecting a photo in an iPhoto/Aperture library.

Fixed a hang that would occur when selecting a large number of photos in the photo browser.

Fixed a crash that would occur when trying to do a multi library search.

Fixed a crash that would occur after trying to add a library to PowerPhotos that could not be added, e.g. because it was on an unsupported drive format.

Fixed a crash that could occur when browsing search results.

Fixed a bug where selecting a photo in the duplicate browser would not show its info in the inspector.

Improved responsiveness of cancellation when merging an iPhoto or Aperture library.

Fixed a crash that could occur when selecting an album in an iPhoto or Aperture library.

Improved performance when browsing iPhoto/Aperture libraries.

PowerPhotos 3.2.3 released with performance and stability fixes

I’m happy to announce the release of PowerPhotos 3.2.3, which focuses on performance and stability, particularly for folks with larger photo libraries.

Performance Improvements

Library search indexing is now faster, and adding photos to albums during copy operations has been optimized to reduce the time spent fetching photo data from the system. I also fixed a hang that could occur when starting a search in a large library.

Quality of Life Improvements

A few smaller changes of note:

The Find Duplicates browser view can now become narrower, which should help folks on smaller screens who had trouble fitting everything on screen with the inspector visible.

PowerPhotos now remembers your last search across relaunches, so you won’t lose your search setup when you quit and restart the app. Also, when switching to a saved search, PowerPhotos will now ask if you want to save your current search first, so you won’t accidentally lose unsaved search criteria.

Lastly, album names shown in the inspector and photo browser now update live when photos are added to or removed from an album, rather than showing stale information until you navigate away and back.

PowerPhotos 3.2.3 is a free update for all registered PowerPhotos 3 users. If you’re still using PowerPhotos 2, upgrades to version 3 are available for 50% off. You can download the latest version from the PowerPhotos website, or use the “Check For Updates” menu item if you already have PowerPhotos installed.

Full Release Notes

Improved progress updating when scanning a large folder of photos for import.

Album names shown in the inspector and photo browser now update live when photos are added to or removed from an album.

The Find Duplicates browser view can now become narrower to fit properly on smaller screens.

When switching to a saved search, we now ask if you want to save your current search before proceeding.

Made changes to reduce timeout errors that could interfere with getting some matches during a duplicate search.

PowerPhotos now remembers and restores the last search you performed across relaunches.

Fixed a hang that could occur when starting a search in a large library.

Improved error display when trying to load an iPhoto/Aperture library of an unsupported version.

Fixed a crash that could occur when reading file size information for certain photos.

Fixed a bug where exporting an album with a slash in the name would create unwanted subdirectories.

Fixed broken link to log files documentation in the preview help page.

Fixed a rare bug that would prevent some photos from being included in a merge preview.

Made performance improvements during library search indexing.

Improved performance when adding photos to albums during photo copy operations.
