Our Programs – Supporting Murphy Scholars every step of the way.

From the transition to high school through college and beyond, our programs are designed to foster confidence, connection, and long-term success.

Programs that Promote Persistence

Our work extends beyond awarding a tuition scholarship. DMSF offers a variety of valuable programs designed to support our Scholars to and through high school graduation and college admission, ensuring their success in life. These “Programs that Promote Persistence” begin before our Scholars enter high school and continue through to college and beyond.

Freshman Summer Bridge

DMSF’s Freshman Summer Bridge program helps ease the transition to high school with two weeks of hands-on learning before Scholars begin at their respective schools. Courses focus on organization, communication, math, and writing, while daily Advisory and Morning Meetings connect Scholars with peers, Murphy Alumni, and DMSF staff. This program equips Scholars with the skills and support they need to thrive in a college-preparatory environment.

Tutoring Program

DMSF meets Scholars where they are, offering both virtual and in-person tutoring to support their academic success. In response to Scholar feedback, we’ve expanded in-person tutoring hubs across the city while continuing monthly sessions at our office. Beyond subject-specific tutoring, we provide test prep workshops and pre-finals support to help Scholars excel and prepare for college.

Mentoring

DMSF pairs Scholars seeking extra support with dedicated mentors, most of whom are Murphy Alumni, who become trusted advisors and confidants. Through regular communication and quarterly meetups, DMSF mentors provide the guidance and encouragement our Scholars need to thrive emotionally, academically, and socially.

Affinity Groups

Transitioning to a new school can be challenging, and finding personal support isn’t always easy. To help, Affinity Groups connect small groups of Scholars with shared experiences to Murphy Alumni leaders who understand their journey. Meeting bi-weekly, these groups provide the social and emotional support Scholars need to thrive academically and personally.

Leadership Programming:
Schmitt Scholars & Arthur’s Aspiring Leaders

The Murphy Schmitt Scholar and Arthur’s Aspiring Leaders programs, in partnership with the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation, provide leadership training and hands-on service-learning experiences for Murphy Scholars. Participants apply as freshmen and commit to academic excellence, leadership development, and a spring service project. Through workshops, teamwork initiatives, and real-world experiences, Scholars gain the skills to lead with purpose and vision.

Summer Opportunities

DMSF connects Murphy Scholars to unique summer opportunities that fuel their growth beyond the classroom. From pre-college programs at top schools like Carnegie Mellon and Smith College to internships at Lincoln Park Zoo and NASA SEES, Scholars can explore their passions in exciting ways.

Murphy Caddie Program

Each year, over 100 Murphy Scholars caddie at golf clubs, earning money, building networks, and experiencing college life firsthand by living on college campuses. Beyond the job, caddying teaches patience, reliability, and teamwork while opening doors to the Evans Scholarship. To date, over 410 Murphy Scholars have received full tuition and housing through this life-changing opportunity.

College Counseling

The DMSF College Counseling program helps Murphy Scholars explore college options and find the best academic, social, and financial fit. Focused on building knowledge and social capital, especially for first-generation students of color, the program prioritizes both college access and long-term success. With personalized support for Scholars and their families, we equip them with the tools to thrive in college and beyond.

Murphy Alumni Network

The Murphy Alumni Program provides career exploration, professional development, and networking opportunities for over 2,300 Alumni. Through company visits, career panels, and skill-building workshops, Alumni gain the tools they need to excel in their academic and professional journeys, empowering them to navigate internships and job opportunities.
