The mission of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund is to unlock educational opportunities for talented Chicago-area students facing financial need. DMSF partners with Scholars, families, and schools through high school and beyond by providing scholarships, academic programs, and personal support so that each Scholar can reach their potential.

At DMSF, we believe that the success of each Murphy Scholar is built upon a strong partnership between three key entities: the Murphy Scholar & Family, the Partner High School and DMSF.
Partner High School
The Partner High School is where the Scholar’s academic experience is realized. These schools offer a rigorous curriculum, extracurricular opportunities, and a supportive learning environment that challenges Scholars to reach their full potential.
Murphy Scholar & Family
The Murphy Scholar and their family form the heart of this triad. The Scholar’s aspirations, dedication, and effort drive their journey, while their family’s support, encouragement, and involvement create a nurturing environment that reinforces their academic and personal growth.
DMSF
As the guiding force, DMSF provides comprehensive support to both the Scholar and their family. This includes financial assistance, mentorship, and access to resources that help Scholars navigate the challenges of their educational journey.
Our History
Bob and Jim Murphy, along with their family and friends, founded the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF) in 1989 to honor their late father, Daniel Murphy. Their father was more than just a blue-collar worker; he was a devoted family man and someone who deeply valued education and service to others. Daniel Murphy believed in providing opportunities to those who worked hard and showed promise, regardless of their financial circumstances.
After his passing, Bob and Jim wanted to create something meaningful that would carry forward their father’s values. Seeing their dad work tirelessly to send them to Loyola Academy later grew to be an experience they saw in many other families too. They saw firsthand how access to quality education could change lives and were determined to help talented students from under-resourced communities gain the same opportunities. Inspired by Daniel Murphy’s legacy of generosity and integrity, they established DMSF to provide scholarships and support to students who otherwise wouldn’t have access to top-tier college preparatory high schools.
What began with just four scholarships in 1990 has since grown into a thriving organization that has helped over 2,300 Scholars attend leading high schools and pursue higher education. Today, Daniel Murphy’s spirit lives on through DMSF’s commitment to empowering the next generation through education.
