Research Update from CCIA
Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is exploring The Smart Bolus System as a potential alternative to traditional livestock identification and reporting methods.
How it works:
- Beef calves receive boluses at 4, 8 or 12 weeks of age
- Attempting to follow the test animals as they move from ranch to ranch where possible
- Each bolus transmits encrypted data every 30 minutes to a reader up to 70 metres away
- Data collected includes location, eating/drinking behaviour and body temperature
- Low-cost, preconfigured gateways automatically send this information to the cloud for analysis
Results so far:
- All boluses in the trial have been safely retained
- Conveyance testing showed cattle movements were tracked and reported automatically — no manual entry needed
Although it is too early in the research to draw conclusions, the project highlights the potential of emerging technologies to simplify reporting, strengthen traceability and provide real-time insights into animal health and movement.

NEW Express Shipping Option in the CCIA Webstore
Starting June 6, clients placing orders through CCIA’s webstore will have access to a new express shipping checkout option to help reduce wait times for urgent orders.
We have developed this update in response to client feedback and operational reviews that identified the need for a faster, more convenient process when clients urgently require indicators.
Here’s how the express shipping option works:
- At checkout, clients can select “Express Shipping” as a checkout option.
- A preauthorization will be placed on the credit card, similar to prepaying at a gas station.
- This allows CCIA operations to prioritize and process the order quickly and efficiently.
To take advantage of this new feature, visit tags.canadaid.ca.
