Start Your Nexus NowWhat Is a VA Nexus Letter?
A VA nexus letter is a medical opinion that explains how a veteran's current diagnosed condition is connected to military service. For many VA disability claims, the Department of Veterans Affairs requires evidence showing that a condition is "at least as likely as not" related to service.
That connection is the nexus. A well-supported nexus letter explains how your military duties, injury history, service records, and current diagnosis are medically related — using VA-standard language and clinical rationale.
Nexus Letter vs. DBQ
A nexus letter establishes the service connection between your condition and military service. A Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) documents the severity, symptoms, and functional impact of a condition. Both may be needed depending on the stage of your claim.
- Veterans filing an initial VA disability claim
- Veterans appealing a denied VA claim
- Veterans seeking secondary service connection
- Veterans working with an attorney, VSO, or claims rep
