ANNUAL EVENT TO REMEMBER, SUPPORT & RAISE AWARENESS OF ROAD SAFETY

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is a global event observed on the third Sunday in November that honors those who have lost their lives or been injured in road traffic incidents while acknowledging the suffering of victims and their families.

San Luis Obispo County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and PASOSafe Volunteer Initiative hosted the 2nd Annual World Day of Remembrance event in San Luis Obispo County, which honored victims of road traffic incidents & supported affected families while promoting road safety awareness. SLO County community residents and visitors were invited to attend this year’s event, which will was held in Paso Robles at Centennial Park in the Picnic area on Sunday, November 16, 2025. Reception was from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m., and a Memorial was from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

ABOUT THE EVENT

REMEMBRANCE & AWARENESS

The World Day of Remembrance in SLO County is a memorial that pays tribute to those who have lost their lives or been injured in road traffic accidents. This annual event raises awareness about the impact of these incidents on affected lives and serves as a reminder to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in our community about the vital importance of road safety.

Remember. Support. Act.

REMEMBER. Join us at The World Day of Remembrance memorial on the third Sunday of every Novemember, featuring speakers who will share heartfelt stories in honor of those we have lost.

SUPPORT. A Grief Counselor is available and shares information on local grief and bereavement support resources at memorial.

ACT. City, County and State represented agencies briefly speak on the importance of road safety. The San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) shares highlights of the County’s Road to Zero Regional Road Safety Action Plan and seeks your feedback on road safety concerns. Together, we explore actionable steps our community that we can take to prevent traffic deaths and serious injuries. Your voice matters in creating a safer future for all.

Ringing of the Bell

Ringing of the Bell takes place, representing victims who have lost their lives, honoring their memory and reminding us of the importance of road safety.

Raising of the Roses

Road safety awareness lapel pins and roses are distributed to all attendees. All are invited to wear an awareness ribbon pin in remembrance of those lost, while promoting road safety. During a release of doves or a fly-over, all raise a rose, as a symbol of those lost and our commitment to promoting road safety.

In Honor of our Loved Ones

A display of shoes are featured at the memorial, symbolizing the lives tragically lost in road traffic incidents. This exhibit serves as a heartfelt tribute to those we have lost and emphasizes the critical importance of road safety.

For all those who have lost a loved one, they are invited to bring a pair of shoes and a photo of your cherished one, which we honor by including in the display. Together, let us remember and reflect on the lives impacted by these tragedies.

On October 2, 2024, the Board of Directors of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments presented and read a proclamation for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in SLO County. This event honors the victims of road traffic incidents, supports affected families, and promotes awareness of road safety. It is an annual event, scheduled for the third Sunday of November.
