Research Process :: Step by Step

This guide provides students with detailed research steps, as well as, what is plagiarism, and how to quote, paraphrase, and summarize.

Use WC Library's Search It All to find books. To see the books owned by WC, set the filter titled "Format" and set it to Book. Your results will include both print and eBooks.

Academic Books ~ How Do I Know if a Book is Scholarly?

scholarly book is written by researchers and scholars for an academic audience. Here are some features of scholarly books you should be looking for when determining whether you have found a scholarly book (1) :

  1. usually published by a university press or a scholarly society;
  2. having an index (alphabetical listing of topics, places, people and events mentioned) and a bibliography or list of references for further reading at the end.
  3. on a narrowly defined or specialized subject;
  4. written in a scholarly and formal style;

Example of a scholarly book from "Search It All":

1. usually published by a university press or a scholarly society

i.e., NYU = New York University

Searching for Books in Search It All

At the top of each Library website page find the blue navigation bar:

Clicking Search It All will take you to the Library Catalog, Search It All.

Search It All will display books and ebooks in the Weatherford College Libraries in both Weatherford and Wise County, as well as books owned by other libraries around the country.  Once you are in Search It All, set the filters on the left side of the page:

  • Format = "Book" (for all book formats) or "Print Book" or "eBook"

If you do NOT see enough results, change the Held By Library filter to "Libraries Worldwide," click on the book title you are interested in, and click on Request Item through Interlibrary Loan. You cannot request eBooks through the Interlibrary Loan system.

About Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If an item you need is not owned by the library, Interlibrary Loan can provide you access to it.

When submitting your ILL from off-campus, you will need to login with your username = first part of your email, password = your college password 

Submit Your ILL Request

  • Submit all ILL requests directly through Search It All 
    • When submitting your ILL from off-campus, you will need to login with your username = first part of your email, password = your college password 
    • Enter a title (if you know it)
    • Enter keywords and click on the article title that you are interested in
    • If full text is not available, click on the Request Item Through Interlibrary Loan button
    • Fill in the form and click Submit
  • Turnaround time for physical items (books and DVDs) is typically 1-2 weeks, while electronic articles are typically received in 1-4 days.
  • Check your email for all notices regarding arrival and overdue physical items.
  • Loan periods are determined by the lenders and typically range from 3-4 weeks. Most items offer a renewal period of up to 2 weeks.
  • Most items can be renewed, but this is at the discretion of the lending library.
  • Overdue interlibrary loan items incur a fine of $0.25/day for each item. There is no grace period for ILL items.
  • ILL is free unless you are notified otherwise. Speaker Jim Wright Library will NOT process an ILL unless the patron approves the charges.
  • The user is liable for replacement costs of lost items plus a $20.00 processing fee.
  • Journal articles often come via email and are forwarded to the user.
