Alphys (JP: アルフィー) (/ˈælfiːz/ AL-feez)[2] is a main character in Undertale. She is the incumbent Royal Scientist, a position she was awarded by Asgore long after the disappearance of her predecessor. She lives in her Lab in western Hotland.

Profile

Appearance

Alphys is a short, yellow lizard monster who shares a similar height with the protagonist. Her head consists of a set of sharp-pointed head crests, a pair of round glasses that does not cover her eyelashes, beady black eyes, and a pair of protruding square buck teeth that is constantly visible. Depending on the direction she is facing, it is depicted as as a set of two or four teeth. Alphys has clawed hands, wears a long-sleeved, large white lab coat with her three-toed feet being visible, and her tail jutting out.

On Alphys's date with the protagonist, she wears a polka dot dress a friend picked for her.[3]

Alphys's posture is somewhat hunched over, with her arms and feet curled toward each other, reflecting her anxiousness.

Personality

Alphys is a shy introvert who is passionate in her work and interests. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments,[4][5] and devalues her skills at times.[6] True to her occupation as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters,[7] and can create thorough plans from those theories. Alphys can create inventions that use both metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit".[8] She is adept in programming,[9] robotics, and mechanical engineering.[10]

The failure of Alphys's experiments with determination overwhelmed her with guilt and insecurity,[11] causing her to procrastinate.[12] Socially, Alphys tends to be avoidant and anxious.[13] Alphys also favors being appealing to others,[14] and resorts to lying or hiding secrets to avoid disappointing herself and others. However, Alphys concealing the truth has caused her to become depressed and remorseful.

At the end of the True Pacifist Route, Alphys is honest with her intentions and is not ashamed.[15]

Interests

Asides from her scientific and mechanical work, Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games.[16] Alphys is fond of posting online content,[17] writing walkthroughs for games,[18] though she prefers giving puzzle solutions as a last resort,[19] shipping,[20] and writing fanfiction.[21] Alphys also has crushes on multiple characters of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore[22] and her compliments towards Toriel,[23] while her most serious crush is Undyne,[24] though she struggles to communicate her feelings.

Speech pattern

While anxious, Alphys has a tendency to stutter. It worsens when she is flustered.[16] When outspoken, Alphys can yell enthusiastically, which can be represented with uppercase dialogue and multiple exclamation marks.[24] In situations where Alphys explains her interests, she does not pause, which is represented by the text box automatically closing.[25]

Prior to her stress, Alphys documented her research formally.[26] After becoming overwhelmed with guilt, she wrote informally in her later research entries, such as lowercase and omitting punctuation.[12] In Alphys's UnderNet statuses, she uses shorthanded internet slang and text emoticons,[13] and can also make ASCII art.[27] Her physical handwriting is described as being difficult to read.[18]

Etymology

The name Alphys is derived from "Dr. A", which is an abbreviation of Dr. Andonuts, a supporting character in MOTHER 2 / EarthBound.[28]

Main story

History

Prior to the events of Undertale, Alphys was neighbors with Bratty and Catty. She often invited them to the garbage dump to find new items, though she primarily collected anime. At some point, Alphys saw an advertisement for the "Human Fanclub" and met Mettaton at one of the fanclub's meetings.[29] In an attempt to impress Asgore and aid Mettaton, she created a mechanical body for the latter.[30] With her success, Asgore appointed Alphys as the Royal Scientist. This ended the lengthy vacancy in the Royal Scientist position that began with the disappearance of former Royal Scientist W.D. Gaster.[31]

At an unspecified point in time, Alphys started conducting research on SOULs at Asgore's request, with the goal to break the barrier. She had searched everywhere for information on humans, including Asgore's Home.[26] Using the True Lab's DT Extraction Machine, Alphys distilled determination from the six collected human SOULs before injecting it into a number of monsters who had "fallen down" and a potential vessel, a golden flower. With the research seemingly yielding no results, Alphys notified the subjects' families. However, the determination-infused monsters soon merged into Amalgamates, and the flower vanished. Out of fear of everyone's reactions,[32] Alphys stays in the Lab[33] and avoids inquiries.[34]

Eventually, Alphys resumed her visits to the garbage dump.[12] One day, Undyne found Alphys staring at the garbage dump's abyss,[1] and became friends with her.

Alphys initially meets the protagonist in her lab. Alphys explains she has watched their journey via hidden cameras,[35] and wants to guide them through Hotland.[36]

However, Alphys states that Mettaton, a robot she created, wants to kill the protagonist.[37] Mettaton then bursts through the wall and forces the protagonist into a quiz show. Alphys helps the protagonist by signing the letter of the correct answer with her hands. However, Mettaton notices her helping when she answers a question out loud about a Mew Mew video game.[38] He embarrasses Alphys by asking the protagonist who they think she has a crush on.

Following the quiz, Alphys offers her phone number to the protagonist. She notices their Cell Phone is old and quickly upgrades it to have various features, including texting, a key chain, links to two Dimensional Boxes, and access to the UnderNet.[39] She expresses excitement at being friends with the protagonist. After a brief pause, Alphys excuses herself and rushes into the nearby "bathroom". Once the protagonist exits the Lab, Alphys realizes that she did not watch the encounter between Undyne and the protagonist.[40]

As the protagonist progresses through Hotland, Alphys frequently updates her UnderNet status.[41] She calls to help them with puzzles,[42] but dislikes giving the solutions outright.[19] Alphys stops posting status updates when she realizes that the protagonist has been reading them the whole time.[43]

While Mettaton antagonizes the protagonist through several death traps, Alphys informs the protagonist of a phone upgrade to aid them in every situation.[10] If the protagonist fails any of Mettaton's challenges, Alphys blames herself,[44] and Mettaton helps her out by letting the protagonist go.[45] Alternatively, Alphys takes some credit if the protagonist succeeds.[46]

Alphys attempts to guide the protagonist through the CORE, but struggles in doing so due to the CORE's variable layout.[47] If the protagonist follows her instructions, they often encounter hostile monsters. If they do not follow her directions, she worries about their trust in her.[48]

At the end of the CORE, Mettaton reveals that Alphys inserted herself into the protagonist's journey by creating obstacles she would then help them to overcome[49] and locks her outside the room to kill the protagonist himself. Still able to communicate with the protagonist. Alphys instructs them to turn Mettaton around and flip his switch to make him vulnerable.[50] However, this instead triggers Mettaton's transformation into Mettaton EX. After the fight, Alphys finally unlocks the door and evaluates Mettaton's body. If the protagonist spared Mettaton, Alphys is relieved that he just ran out of battery power.[51] If the protagonist killed Mettaton, Alphys faintly tells them not to worry.[52] She stays with Mettaton's body as the protagonist enters the next room.

Alphys catches up with the protagonist before they take the elevator to New Home. Down the hallway, Alphys notes that the protagonist must be excited to return home. At the elevator, she admits she lied,[53] and tells the protagonist that they must kill Asgore to pass through the barrier.[54] She apologizes before leaving, and takes Mettaton's body back to the lab.

True Pacifist Route

Alphys

At Undyne's request, the protagonist delivers Undyne's Letter to Alphys. Alphys hesitates to open the letter, but upon doing so, assumes the protagonist wrote it.[55] She changes into a dress, attempts then disregards giving gifts meant for Undyne,[8] and takes the protagonist to the garbage dump for their date.

While there, the protagonist and Alphys roleplay to help her open up to Undyne about her feelings.[56] Undyne overhears them talking about her and approaches. Alphys confesses that she was trying to impress Undyne by making her hobbies sound more scientific.[57] Undyne comforts Alphys before tossing her into a trash can, and continues to reassure her. Papyrus appears during their conversation and takes Alphys out for a lesson in self-confidence. Their training ends early and he sends her home.[58]

When the protagonist returns to the lab, a note from Alphys can be found on the ground in front of the "bathroom". The note directs the protagonist to the True Lab's entrance to discover the truth, in case they do not hear from her again.[59] Inside the True Lab, the protagonist's discovers the results of Alphys's failed experiments, the Amalgamates, eventually reaching the power generator to restore power to the lab. Alphys arrives soon after and declares her intention to return the Amalgamates to their families.[60]

Alphys joins Undyne in breaking up the fight between Asgore and the protagonist, but she is quickly captured by Flowey. Alphys is one of the monsters to block his attacks, encouraging the protagonist by stating her faith in them.[61] Flowey then absorbs her SOUL along with the SOULs of every monster in the underground.

During the battle against Asriel, Alphys appears as one of the Lost Souls. She is saved alongside the rest of the Lost Souls by the protagonist reminding her of their friendship.

After Alphys regains consciousness, she remembers little about what happened. She tells Asgore and Toriel about her failed experimentation, to which Toriel fires her.[62]

After the protagonist awakens, she discusses her plans to watch anime when they leave for the surface.[15] She helps explain what anime is to Asgore, and asks for Frisk's help in doing so.[63] Alphys also tries to show Asgore anime on her phone, but accidentally shows him a picture of robots kissing.[64]

On the surface, Alphys joins Undyne, who leaves to check on Papyrus. In the True Pacifist ending credits, Alphys is seen relaxing on the beach with Undyne, Lesser Dog, Greater Dog, the Nice Cream guy, and Onionsan. Undyne kisses her on the cheek, and she faints.

Genocide Route

Alphys told me that she would watch me fight you...

Undyne the Undying's last words

On the Genocide Route, Alphys does not confront the protagonist directly.[65] When Undyne calls her, Alphys tells Undyne that she would watch her fight with the protagonist, evacuate all monsters if anything goes wrong, and instruct Asgore to absorb the six human SOULs.[66][67] Despite the evacuation, a few monsters remain, including Muffet, Burgerpants and the Royal Guards.

If the protagonist aborts the route during their travel through Hotland, Sans immediately hands over the phone to Alphys in the Neutral Route epilogue. Alphys tells them that the monsters elected her as a new ruler and lauded her as a hero, but that she remains anxious around people.[67]

Relationships

Mettaton

Before the events of Undertale, Mettaton, as a ghost, started a Human Fanclub. The only person to join was Alphys,[29] who showed Mettaton designs of a robot she wanted to build for him.

Alphys worries that Mettaton will leave her behind after she finishes his body.[68] She cares deeply about him, and cannot imagine what to do if he was gone.[51]

Alphys disappears in Neutral Route endings where the protagonist killed either Mettaton or Undyne;[69][70] it is implied that she may have committed suicide.

Undyne

Alphys and Undyne are in love with each other. When Undyne asked Alphys what was in the garbage dump's abyss, she explained her theories.[7] They became friends after a few meetings at the garbage dump, and Alphys developed a crush on Undyne. Alphys finds Undyne's personality and strength appealing, and considers her "unbeatable" in a battle.[40][71] She appreciates that Undyne listens to her and would protect her if necessary.[72] She tries to impress Undyne by using her job as a scientist, as she does not want Undyne to see her as a "nerdy loser".[73] However, Alphys becomes ashamed of her lies, and fears Undyne's reaction if she confesses the truth and her feelings.

Before the protagonist's arrival, Alphys helped Undyne with her skills. This included preparing Waterfall's Bridge Seed puzzles[74] and Snowdin's Multicolor Tile Puzzle.[75] Outside of puzzles, Alphys also modifies Undyne's refrigerator to heat up food,[76] and builds a giant sword with her.[77] When they are off-duty, Undyne occasionally visits Alphys.[78] Alphys shares her love of human anime and manga with Undyne, though she convinces Undyne that it is human history.[79] Alphys also shares "chilly pink stuff" with Undyne.[80]

Though Alphys assumes that Undyne only likes her as a friend, she remains wistful. Alphys names variables after Undyne, writes her name in the margins of her notes, and writes stories about them sharing a domestic life.[81] Alphys has also prepared gifts meant for Undyne if a potential date were to occur.[8] However, due to her low self-esteem, she is oblivious to Undyne's interest in her.[13][82]

On the True Pacifist Route, Alphys and Undyne begin dating, and, in the True Pacifist ending credits, Alphys swoons and faints after Undyne kisses her on the cheek.

Alphys

Alphys admires and supports the protagonist, and wants to be friends with them after watching them leave the Ruins.[35] She often reacts positively when the protagonist succeeds, and tries to guide them before their proper meeting.[83] With Mettaton's aid, Alphys intends to be a "heroine" to the protagonist, and to convince them to not leave the underground.[49]

When Alphys finally meets the protagonist, she fusses over her appearance and the lab's condition.[84] After upgrading their phone, Alphys is excited to be friends with them.[39] However, she immediately hides in the "bathroom", as she knows the protagonist usually explores areas. Due to Alphys's anxiety and the protagonist not calling, she forgets that they can read her updates. Alphys initially struggles to call them,[13] yet continues to guide them. During puzzles, Alphys hesitates to aid in the Reactivated Door Puzzle, as it may be "unfun" if she did.[85] In her eagerness to help, she tries to explain it anyway.[86] Alphys also deactivates a conveyor belt's force field when she accidentally intervenes.[87] If something goes awry or the protagonist is injured, Alphys apologizes and berates herself.[44]

Despite this, Alphys becomes less anxious and more confident in herself. She also tries to befriend them by conversing outside of puzzles. This includes lying to comfort them on bypassing the barrier,[88] and asking if they would watch a TV show with her later.[89][90] If the protagonist has killed Mettaton, Alphys reassures them with a lie.[52] While following the protagonist to New Home's elevator, however, Alphys chooses to tell the truth about the barrier out of guilt.[53] She apologizes before leaving.

On the True Pacifist Route, Alphys dates the protagonist, as she assumes they wrote Undyne's love letter. During the date, Alphys later admits that she only went because she wanted to be nice.[91] After the protagonist helps Alphys to work through her feelings for Undyne, she becomes more honest. Despite knowing that the protagonist may have read her lab entries, Alphys explains herself.[92] When Alphys is later rescued from being a Lost Soul, she says that she cares about the protagonist and their friends as much as they care about her.[93]

If the protagonist aborts the Genocide Route in Hotland, Alphys holds no positive feelings for the protagonist. In the aftermath call, Alphys admits she should have killed them when she had the chance.[94]

Asgore

ENTRY NUMBER 20, True Lab

Alphys had a crush on Asgore, which led her to try and impress him with Mettaton. To match Asgore's interests, she claimed Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL,[30] and tried to add combat capabilities.[22] This led to Asgore hiring Alphys as the underground's new Royal Scientist.

Alphys tries to do what Asgore asks of her, which leads to the failed experiments with determination. However, she does not let Asgore know of her failures. Alphys also does not tell Asgore about the VHS tapes she had found when she was looking for information on human SOULs.[26]

On the True Pacifist Route, Alphys helps to stop Asgore before he can fight the protagonist. While comforting Asgore, Alphys indirectly admits that she has moved on from her crush on him.[95] In the epilogue, Alphys instead thinks he and Toriel probably were a cute couple,[20] and tries to explain what anime is when he asks.[63] She later confesses her failed experiments to Asgore.[62]

Sans

Alphys is implied to be close friends with Sans. In the True Pacifist Route's epilogue, Alphys preemptively responds to Undyne with a joke and remarks that she knew Sans was about to tell the same one.[96]

On the Neutral Route, If the protagonist calls Papyrus at the lab's entrance, Sans can be heard joking that there may be dogs inside.[97] This implies that Alphys trusts Sans enough to have informed him of the True Lab since Endogeny, an Amalgamate composed of several dogs, can be found there, Sans is also implied to send Alphys dog food to help her feed Endogeny,[98]

In the Alphys Ending, Sans gives Alphys company and support when the survivors declare her the new queen, and she calls Sans "a good guy".[99]

Toriel

Alphys does not meet Toriel in-person until either a Neutral Route ending where Toriel reclaims the title of queen, or when interrupting Asgore's fight with the protagonist on the True Pacifist Route. Even though Toriel fires her as the Royal Scientist, Alphys easily befriends her. She also finds Toriel attractive.

When Toriel questions how anyone could flirt with her, Alphys laughs hysterically.[100] Alphys also expresses her love of the "Tori and Gorey" ship, adding that she may write a lot of fanfiction about it.[21]

Bratty and Catty

Alphys used to live on their street.[101] She was like a big sister to them[102] and took them on trips to the garbage dump to find cool junk.

Alphys evacuates Bratty and Catty on the Genocide Route.[103]

Creation and development

The UNDERTALE Art Book reveals that Alphys was originally meant to be male, but Toby Fox quickly grew to dislike that idea, so he changed Alphys to female by simply adding eyelashes to her design. Alphys's design was inspired by John Egbert from Homestuck, Lisa Simpson and Francis from Super Paper Mario.[104] Alphys's text sound originates from a voice clip of his friend Xan Wetherall, who was part of the core development team for Deltarune's Chapter 2.[105]

Trivia

  • If the player attempts to name the fallen human "Alphys", the narration reads "D-Don't do that." and the game bars the name from use. However, naming the fallen human "Alphy" prompts a confused "Uh.... OK?" and is allowed.
  • Alphys's favorite anime, Mew Mew Kissy Cutie, may be a reference to Tokyo Mew Mew (also known as Mew Mew Power in North America), a magical girl romance anime.
    • The posters in Alphys's lab share design characteristics with Mew Mew Power.
  • Before the protagonist enters the True Lab, there is a note in the trash can that reads "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID." It is possible Flowey has written this note to push Alphys to reveal her secrets.
  • Alphys is the only major character in the game who the protagonist does not fight. As such, her combat capabilities are unknown.
    • On the True Pacifist Route, she generates a wall of electricity to protect the protagonist's SOUL from Flowey's bullets. In the subsequent battle against Asriel, Alphys's Lost Soul uses some of Mettaton EX's attacks.
  • On the True Pacifist Route, Alphys appears in her lab coat before Flowey attacks and absorbs everyone's SOULs. However, as a Lost Soul, she appears in the dress she wore on her date with the protagonist.
  • The game Alphys is seen playing on the beach in the True Pacifist Route's epilogue is internally referred to as gameboy.[106]
  • In the game's code for the questionasker script (which handles the answers to Mettaton's quiz), there is a string reading "LOOLLLL IF YOU CAME TO THIS PART OF THE CODE TO SEE WHO I HAVE A CRUSH ON YOURE OUT OF LUCK". [107]
  • According to the UNDERTALE Alarm Clock, cold weather makes Alphys move and talk more slowly.[108] This is most likely because reptiles are cold-blooded and freeze in cold temperatures.
  • Alphys dislikes ketchup-flavored potato chips.[109]
