Now that kink_bingo round three is officially over, I have started working on my kink bingo line! So exciting. I have like six posts in my head, after doing this vid, about how Hustle and Leverage both satisfy these huge class fantasies (fantasies about working class people, fantasies of working class people), starting with Mickey's whole speech about how his dad worked hard and never got his reward, but perhaps I should let the vid do the talking. I'll just mention that this vid is in the spirit of "domestic/tradesman kink," but fudges it a little bit here and there . . . but hey, a valet at a hotel totally recalls the domestic personal chauffeur, anyway, so I think it still hits the kink. ANYHOW on the to the vid.
title: Working for a Living fandoms: Hustle and Leverage song artist: Huey Lewis with Phil Vassar size/type: 40MB .avi (play with VLC) content notes:no standard notes apply. thanks to:anatsuno and eruthros for helping me along as I made this one. You two are lovely! summary: The Hustle and Leverage crews really, really like playing dressup. For kink_bingo, prompt "domestic/tradesman kink."
Can someone tell me who is the director of photography on Leverage, so that I may find them and bash them in the face repeatedly with an oversized foam baseball bat? And the lighting designer and the cinematographer, too, while we're at it. In fact EVERYONE.
Because the lighting on that show is a CRIME. First of all, someone needs to tell them that "dark," by itself, IS NOT AN AESTHETIC. Even shows known for their "darkness," like X-Files, were doing something with it - you can't just turn down the lights and call it art! On Leverage, I am constantly wondering WHY ON EARTH everyone seems to be standing under a tarp to shield them from the lighting rig.
As you might guess, this annoys me greatly as a vidder.
And, not incidentally? This kind of lighting choice is racist. eta which isn't to say that it's intentionally racist, but that because it's some combination of badly done/underfunded/lazily done/unthinkingly done, it ends up reinforcing racism. /eta Leverage is darkened down to the point that I can just barely make out the facial features of the white cast (which, btw, doesn't really do them any favours either) and so Hardison's face often just becomes a dark-shaped blob in the foreground. Let me give you some examples (as well as some before-after shots, showing how I attempt to correct this kind of thing in Final Cut).
It's not a secret that Hollywood lighting techniques have been specifically designed to make white people look good, and that this goes back to the beginning of film. And it's important to remember, too, that limiting the facial expressiveness of black actors is not only racist in the obvious way - dehumanizing actors of colour, literally denying them visibility, etc. It's also racist in that it plays into a racist stereotype with a long and extremely gross history; namely, the "overanimated negro" stereotype that's familiar to me from old Bugs Bunny cartoons and the like. Sianne Ngai, in her book Ugly Feelings, has an amazing chapter on this stereotype and its associations, which she calls "animatedness." Like the name implies, the black figure characterized by "animatedness" is also characterized by a lack of will - the appearance of having been animated by someone else, like a puppet on strings whose grotesque and exaggerated emotions can only be expressed in the crudest way possible, and are only expressed by a force outside themselves. Anyway, it was Ngai's analysis of this history of representation that got me thinking along these lines, and I really recommend that chapter of Ugly Feelings if you want to read more about it.
It's easy for me to imagine Aldis Hodge, when lit like that, being told by the director to "go bigger" or "give us a little more" - to exaggerate his reactions and expressions so that they'll register on camera, register within a visual environment that is not designed with him in mind. And denying actors of colour the ability to register subtle, quiet, minute changes in facial expression continues the American history of representing black people as overanimated, emptyheaded, crude, soulless, animalistic, and grotesque.
ANYWAY, that's how Leverage's lighting choices are not only ugly, but also racist. And that's how I attempt to make up for them. But vidders who don't know how to do that, who don't have the time to do that, etc., are bound to just recreate these problems. And it's not like our options are ideal - like I said, the problem whereby lightening the entire shot also makes skin tones look lighter isn't the greatest thing ever. But I do think that we, as vidders, have a responsibility to try - if we have the ability, if we have the spoons - to try as best we can to be aware of and deal with the racist cinematography in the source we're working with.
. . . and like I said, if you know of a better way to lighten images, or to make dark-skinned characters visible in a dark shot, please let me know!
I have too too many recs and links to give you guys! I think I'll fall back on that old friend . . . THE NUMBERED LIST.
1) Apologies to those who requested drabbles who haven't received them yet - I promise I am working on them! I hope to get a few more done tonight. But I have written a bunch of them that folks might be interested in, so here are some links to the "drabbles" I've finished. Yes, one of them is 2000 words and none of them is less than 900, what of that? I am constitutionally incapable of brevity. As this post shall illustrate.
2) And speaking of the drabble meme! It has produced many fics that have poked me delightfully in the heart. Just a couple of those include John Henry split this heart split this full moon heart, a Mythbusters Adam/Jamie post-apocalyptic story by gloss, which I love SO MUCH I cannot even tell you, and Stargaze, by toft, a Psych Gus/Shawn story that is so full of cuteness and adorable detective boyfriend-ness that I actually tried to hug my computer screen when I read it.
3) Sherlock Holmes fandom! Sherlock Holmes fandom is blossoming delightfully, I must say. Some vids I have thoroughly enjoyed in this fandom include giandujakiss's most excellent untitled Holmes vid thing and settiai's lovely Watson/Holmes/Irene vid, The Boxer. For those who like a little more of the old-fashioned Holmes, I must recommend dkwilliams's fabulous Holmes/Watson vid Your Mistake, which is a vid to the Granada series and absolutely fills me with awwwww. It's also a great showcase of how fun and physical the Granada series is. So, that's vids; some STORIES I have thoroughly enjoyed in this fandom include Change of Plans, by blue_soaring, which is fantastically hot Holmes/Watson, really well characterized, and Infinite Variations Upon a Single Moment, by lisztful, which has (re)awakened in me the desire for Holmes/Watson transfic, yay!
4) Speaking of that Watson/Holmes/Irene vid up there, have you guys noticed how many fabulous OT3 vids there have been lately? OT3 vidding is developing into its own bigass genre all of a sudden! Here are the OT3 vids of my heart: Apple Candy (Spock/Uhura/Kirk) and Imma Be (Parker/Hardison/Eliot), both by talitha78; and, from the festivids collection, Let's Misbehave (Elizabeth/Peter/Neal) and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow (Oliver/Geoffrey/Ellen). OH TEE THREEEEES! I love them so. All of those vids are so amazing, too, you'll love them I promise. The White Collar one is so great, I cannot wait to find out who made it.
5) Speaking of festivids, I haven't done festivids recs at ALL yet, have I? Okay, well, here you go. Some wonderful as-yet-unknown person made me a sweet and hilarious Red Dwarf vid called Every Star You Chase, which is just as silly and cracked-out and lil-bit-heartbreaking as the show itself; it was a fabulous gift to receive, and made me oh so happy! Other people also received cool gifts, many many cool gifts, but I will give you a little list of my very top favourites. Really there's something for everyone at festivids, and I recommend that you just cruise through the masterlist and watch everything you can, because seriously there is a lot of quality. Okay. But, if you can't watch them all, in addition to the aforementioned White Collar and Slings and Arrows vids, you should be sure not to miss:
Past In Present (Chak De! India) - omg LADIES SPORTS FILM VID! I have not yet watched this without involuntarily exclaiming "awwww!" at the end of it, srsly. Never Be (Criminal Minds) - brilliantly edited, difficult to watch, and full of hard triumph. Amazing work. Radar (Die Hard) - It's just like watching the Die Hard movies, but compressed into this tiny space so that it's CONCENTRATED AWESOME. Facts of Life (Facts of Life) - it is FACTS OF LIFE FEMSLASH YOU GUYS. What else do you need to know? No Fate (Flashforward) - I haven't kept up with this series, but holy SHIT this vid makes me reconsider that decision. OH JOHN CHO! Cemeteries of London (Forever Knight) - I didn't know you could still make a non-ironic Forever Knight vid and make it interesting and compelling! But friends you CAN, and this is it. Enchantment (Kamikaze Girls) - oh god, so sweet and soft and cracked out and violent and AWESOME. ttly hot vid. One (Magnum PI) - again, who knew this could be nonironic and still compelling? This vid made me feel emotionally invested in TOM SELLECK's PTSD, yall. Le Disko (Neverending Story) - again with the amazing crack! The Transported Man (The Prestige) - god, I wish the FILM gave me the kind of shivers that this vid gives me. Gorgeous, gorgeous editing, amazing clip choice, omg. Feel It (SYTYCD) - wheeeeeeeeee! Lullabye for a Stormy Night (The Sound of Music) - oh my goodness, MARIA! and LIESL! I ship them secretly, but really this vid is about their friendship and strength, and the strength that Maria brings to everyone around her awwww. Passenger Fever (Twin Peaks) - chilling and disconcerting and beautiful. Mr Blue Sky (Wall-E) - really wonderfully edited vid about ROBOTS IN LOVE! I adored the vid, but oh god, the fatphobia of the source still puts me off so much that I almost can't deal. But it is a beautiful vid.
6) WHEW THIS WAS A LONG POST. Next time I will not let things build up so, I promise.
fandom: Leverage pairing-thing: Parker/Alec/Eliot rating: M for makeouts words: ~2400 content notes:no standard notes apply. Contains mutual three-way stoned makeouts. a/n: Written for the kink_bingo prompt, "drugs/alcohol." Thanks to eruthros for the beta and the support! soundtrack: I heartily recommend listening to some Sam Cooke while reading this fic, as I did while writing it. Here are some songs to get you started: Since I Met You Baby and Almost In Your Arms.
summary: Eliot watches, fascinated, as Hardison brings the joint to his lips and inhales, making the lit end burn bright and cherry-red for several long seconds.
here's a thing I did: I watched the last episode of Prison Break, and the DVD movie, yesterday morning. It got really really painfully sexist there at the end! There's really not enough WTF in the world for that show. Anyway, then, yesterday evening, I watched some Arrested Development, which I watch when I wish for a laugh. What I learned was: THEY ARE THE SAME EXACT SHOW. Except one of them is a comedy and the other one is an unintentional comedy.
. . . then look no further. For me, one of the main reasons to watch Leverage is because this is one of the people behind the show. After five years with Joe fucking Mallozzi, reading that post (re: portrayals of Judge Sotomayor in the right-wing media) was like a soothing balm to my soul.
As is the fact that there are women and people of colour who write the show, direct it, produce it, and executive produce it. Not an overwhelming majority of women and people of colour, but they're there. And the white dudes seem to be dudes like John Rogers, above.
fandom: Leverage pairing: Parker/Peggy, Parker/Sophie rating: M for mostly makeouts words: ~3500 content notes:no standard notes apply. a/n: I started this right after seeing "The Juror #6 Job," and then took forever to actually finish it. Probably makes more sense if you've seen that episode. Title from the Girlyman song of the same name.
I can no longer haz a toft, as I put her on a bus this morning to go back to Canada-land. Sadness! Now I have no excuse to pretend like I'm on vacation, and have to go back to doing things like "working out" and "getting shit done." That sucks. It was lovely while she was here, though - we went hiking and played pirate-themed miniature golf, went to see Star Trek with livrelibre and eruthros, read medieval grammar textbooks (or, at least one), and of course we plotted out our Leverage AU that we're going to cowrite. In which Alec is a wizard, Eliot is a centaur, Parker is an elf-bandit, Sophie is part fairy, and Nate is . . . some guy. IT WILL BE AWESOME. I love that we're just skipping past the first three years of this fandom in which people write realistic set-in-the-existing-universe OTP fic, and moved on to the wacky cracked out teamfic AU interspecies heist novellas. Trust me, all you people who said you wanted the AU where Rodney was a gynecologist - this is what you really want. Leverage fantasy AU.
Also, let me say that I am utterly ashamed of all the people who wanted the AU where Rodney is a gynecologist. I guess I should know better than to expect good taste from SGA fandom. :) Oh my dear old fandom, I do still love you a lot.
Anyhow, this is how my week has been: full of fangirls and awesomeness.
I should also mention that I loved the new Star Trek film just to DEATH, even despite some race/gender reservations that I had. I just love Spock THIS MUCH, and I love Uhura and Sulu and Scottie even though they didn't get enough screentime (esp. Sulu, who is my #1 after Spock), and plus Kirk was there too. I feel a new fandom coming on like a fever. If, as livrelibre informs us, this is going to be a TV show in a couple of years, then I may pass out from sheer happy-shiny-new/old-fandom delight. Even now I have like two dozen tabs open with Uhura/Spock and Kirk/Spock and Kirk/Spock/Uhura and Sulu/Chekhov (my TOS OTP!) and I am going to read them allllllll hurrah.
LASTLY: Did yall see butterfly's ST:AOS Kirk-vid? It is AWESOME! It's all about Kirk's performance as "Kirk," in a way that totally reminds me of killa's ST:TOS Kirk-vid to "Razzle Dazzle." Anyway, it's Kirk to a Britney Spears song, what more do you need to know.
that's right, toft and I have been playing scrabble again. I don't post all of our brilliant scrabble games here (partially because we are actually writing some of them, sometimes) but this one is just such a wonderful example of the genre of dirty scrabble games, I had to post it. The AU that goes with it is a little underdeveloped, but I think that the board speaks for itself:
I . . . I have a new show. And I know what you're going to say - honey, are you sure it's the right time for a new show? You just got out of a long relationship with a show that treated you bad! Maybe you should take some time for yourself before getting into another show. But no, mom, this show is different - this show treats me right! This show loves me for WHO I AM. This show and I are in love, and I know it's only been ten episodes, but I'm telling you - IT'S RIGHT THIS TIME. IT'S FOREVER. I've found my soulmate, and I know that I told you I found my soulmate the last three times, but this time it's for real. This time it's going to be different. Did I mention we're getting married on thursday?
