For over a decade, the Theatre Aspen Apprentice Program (TAAP) for aspiring theatre professionals has been offering the opportunity for students to gain hands on experience with professionals in their fields and the opportunity to observe and assist in the theatrical production process from start to finish. Apprenticeships are offered in areas including: Carpentry, Company Management; Costume & Wardrobe; Choreography; Development; Education; Lighting; Marketing; Music Direction; Performance; Sound; Stage Management; and Writing & Direction.
Theatre Aspen Apprentices will make valuable connections and develop career skills by working on the main stage, participating in special events, assisting in the administrative office and front of house and through available design and teaching opportunities in the Theatre Aspen School. While at Theatre Aspen, all apprentices will have the opportunity to work with creative team members and will attend weekly seminars taught by Theatre Aspen staff and other leading industry professionals.
Apprentices will be in residence in the spectacular mountain setting of Aspen, CO for the entirety of the Theatre Aspen summer season from mid-May through late-August. Select Apprenticeships offer the possibility to arrive earlier and to extend past the summer season for work on fall activities.
Apprentices have the opportunity to work with and learn alongside leading artists in their fields, and under the direction of highly qualified and experienced professionals: successful directors, choreographers, designers and performers from across the United States, whose credits include work on Broadway, on national tours, in Hollywood and regional theatres. Students will make valuable connections with leading employers and artists in the areas of Carpentry, Company Management, Design, Education, Electrics, Marketing, Performance, Production Management, Properties, Stage Management, Technical Supervision, Wardrobe, and more.
Performance apprentices are cast in at least one main stage show and the Theatre Aspen Summer Cabaret Series and may have additional performance opportunities throughout the summer. Design and Technical apprentices work with professional designers and technicians in their field of choice. Education apprentices work with professional Teaching Artists and Education Administrators in youth classes and productions. Apprentices have the opportunity to gain other industry skills by assisting in the administrative office, working in the concession stand, and teaching for Theatre Aspen Education.
The Producing Director, creative team members, company associates, and other industry experts will offer a variety of classes, lectures and workshops given by guest performers, directors, TA staff, and area industry professionals. Topics may include Actors Equity, Alexander Technique, Audition Techniques, “The Biz of the Biz,” Casting Director One-on-Ones, Designer sessions, Resume Preparation, Contract Negotiation, Vocal Health, and Arts Administration.
All apprenticeships receive a competitive scholarship. Housing is also provided at no cost to the apprentice, as is all transportation to and from Aspen. Free public transportation is available within Aspen, and bikes are available at no cost.
Performance and Stage Management Apprentices have the opportunity to gain membership to Actors’ Equity Association after the summer through the Open Access program. The apprenticeship with Theatre Aspen is considered professional work on a theatre production in the United States and therefore makes former apprentices eligible for the program. Theatre Aspen prides itself on preparing young professionals for work in the field.
While at Theatre Aspen, Apprentices may have opportunities to earn additional wages, based on production/work schedule and completion of applicable training for each position. Some of these positions include Concession Staff during Mainstage Performances before shows and during intermission and Event Manager and/or Bar Staff during weddings, corporate, and other rental events.
Theatre Aspen Apprentices join a supportive atmosphere in a spectacular mountain setting with the opportunity to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime outdoor and cultural activities. This includes a rafting trip, participation in the 4th of July parade, and other apprentice gatherings. Apprentices will also join the Theatre Aspen Alumni Association after successful completion of the program, where they can connect with other alumni currently working in professional positions across all facets of the industry.

As part of the Costumes & Wigs Department, the Wig Apprentice focuses on maintaining the wigs while also assisting with the costumes and wardrobe department as a whole. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in wigs and costumes, offering practical training, mentorship, and exposure to a fast-paced, collaborative theatre environment.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Assist with the preparation, styling, cleaning, and maintenance of wigs, facial hair, and hairpieces
• Support wig fittings, quick changes, and backstage wig calls during rehearsals and performances
• Help with labeling, organization, and storage of wigs and wig supplies
• Learn basic wig-making, knotting, ventilating, and repair techniques under supervision
• Maintain hygiene standards for wigs, tools, and workspaces
• Assist Costume Shop Supervisor and Wardrobe Supervisor in setup of costume shop, dressing rooms, and onsite wardrobe trailers
• Assist Costume Shop Supervisor in any necessary fittings by taking notes, photos, and measurements
• Attend rehearsals and design run-throughs with Wardrobe Supervisor and/or Costume Designer(s) as needed
• Assist Wardrobe Supervisor with the creation of wardrobe paperwork for the run of the show
• Perform alterations on costumes as directed by Wardrobe Supervisor and Costume Shop Supervisor
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of dressing rooms, quick changes areas, and the wardrobe trailer during run of shows
• Act as a dresser for Mainstage shows, this includes presetting wardrobe items, executing quick changes, and assisting with laundry. This position is at performances each night.
• Perform pre and post-show responsibilities as directed by Wardrobe Supervisor, including laundry, ironing, steaming, and prepping costumes and dressing rooms
• Check in/out all costumes before and after every performance using appropriate paperwork
• Gather costumes for laundering following each performance including spraying dry-clean only garments
• Perform necessary maintenance/notes on costumes and wigs
• Participate in changeover between season shows
• Rotate costumes and wigs in dressing rooms and individual dressing spaces as necessary
• Assist with strike and repackaging of wigs
• Assist with the summer gala as needed
Requirements / Qualifications:
• You are a college-aged young professional, a currently-enrolled college student, or a recently-graduated college student no more than 12 months past your graduation, with either a declared major in a related field or relevant experience in the industry
• You have a passion for the Arts and Theatre and bringing both to the Aspen community
• You believe in teamwork, camaraderie, and have willingness to pitch in
• You have excellent people skills

For over forty years, Theatre Aspen has been the region’s most celebrated theatrical institution—producing world-class performances and attracting acclaimed artists to one of the most unique destinations in the world.
Theatre Aspen’s Writing and Direction Apprentice plays an essential role in the creation development and staging of both the Mainstage and Cabaret Series shows. The apprentice works alongside the directors and stage management to stage shows, write scripts, complete dramaturgical research, track script and blocking changes, and more.
There is opportunity for this position to also act as a swing for mainstage productions but not non-performers should still feel free to apply.
