Wig and Costume Apprentice
Theatre Aspen, the award-winning professional theatre company nestled in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, is seeking a Costume & Wardrobe Apprentice to join our 2026 summer team. For over forty years, Theatre Aspen has been the region’s most celebrated theatrical institution—producing world-class performances and attracting acclaimed artists to one of the most unique destinations in the world. Collaborating with some of the industry’s leading designers, the Wig Apprentice plays a vital role in realizing the creative team’s vision on stage. As part of the Costumes & Wigs Department, the Wig Apprentice focuses on maintaining the wigs while also assisting with the costumes and wardrobe department as a whole. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in wigs and costumes, offering practical training, mentorship, and exposure to a fast-paced, collaborative theatre environment.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Assist with the preparation, styling, cleaning, and maintenance of wigs, facial hair, and hairpieces
• Support wig fittings, quick changes, and backstage wig calls during rehearsals and performances
• Help with labeling, organization, and storage of wigs and wig supplies
• Learn basic wig-making, knotting, ventilating, and repair techniques under supervision
• Maintain hygiene standards for wigs, tools, and workspaces
• Assist Costume Shop Supervisor and Wardrobe Supervisor in setup of costume shop, dressing rooms, and onsite wardrobe trailers
• Assist Costume Shop Supervisor in any necessary fittings by taking notes, photos, and measurements
• Attend rehearsals and design run-throughs with Wardrobe Supervisor and/or Costume Designer(s) as needed
• Assist Wardrobe Supervisor with the creation of wardrobe paperwork for the run of the show
• Perform alterations on costumes as directed by Wardrobe Supervisor and Costume Shop Supervisor
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of dressing rooms, quick changes areas, and the wardrobe trailer during run of shows
• Act as a dresser for Mainstage shows, this includes presetting wardrobe items, executing quick changes, and assisting with laundry. This position is at performances each night.
• Perform pre and post-show responsibilities as directed by Wardrobe Supervisor, including laundry, ironing, steaming, and prepping costumes and dressing rooms
• Check in/out all costumes before and after every performance using appropriate paperwork
• Gather costumes for laundering following each performance including spraying dry-clean only garments
• Perform necessary maintenance/notes on costumes and wigs
• Participate in changeover between season shows
• Rotate costumes and wigs in dressing rooms and individual dressing spaces as necessary
• Assist with strike and repackaging of wigs
• Assist with the summer gala as needed
Requirements / Qualifications:
• You are a college-aged young professional, a currently-enrolled college student, or a recently-graduated college student no more than 12 months past your graduation, with either a declared major in a related field or relevant experience in the industry
• You have a passion for the Arts and Theatre and bringing both to the Aspen community
• You believe in teamwork, camaraderie, and have willingness to pitch in
• You have excellent people skills
