Steve Rands is a dedicated sculptor whose work reflects a profound commitment to the skilled trades, particularly in metal shaping, fabrication, and stone carving. His journey into the art world is rooted in a rich background of technical expertise and creative problem-solving, stemming from his diverse career as a nuclear propulsion plant technician, Naval Officer, helicopter pilot, and small business owner.
Steve’s path to sculpture began in high school, with aspirations of continuing on to a Bachelor’s of Fine Art. He was intimidated by the prospect of accumulating student loan debt, coupled with a lack of confidence in having a voice as an 18 year old artist and consequently, he took the next logical option and instead enlisted in the United States Navy. After two years spent training to be a mechanical operator of submarine nuclear propulsion plants, he was awarded a scholarship and attended Purdue University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He then moved on to a career as a Naval Officer and helicopter pilot, taking advantage of opportunities to tap into his creative side whenever an opportunity presented. Over the course of his career, including five combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Steve developed a voice, but more importantly, a desire to return to his roots of artistic creation and the manual skilled trades. He now combines this with the military discipline that requires precision, technical acumen, and an ability to manage complex projects. These skills have proven invaluable in his professional art career.
Upon retiring from the Navy in 2017, Steve settled in Mechanicsville, MD, where he founded a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business specializing in architectural metal fabrication. His company served defense, commercial, and local government clients, providing a foundation for his future endeavors in the arts. During this period, more and more opportunities for creative projects emerged, including his first few public installation sculptures. This is the point where Steve realized his true purpose – merging manual skilled trades with modern, computer-aided technology in the pursuit of creative expression.
In 2022, Steve and his wife relocated to Lawrence, Kansas, her hometown, to care for her parents. This move provided Steve with the opportunity to focus exclusively on his sculptural work. He established his studio in Lawrence’s Warehouse Arts District, a vibrant community of artists and creators. The 2400 sqft space, equipped with an overhead crane and a comprehensive welding and machine shop, is where Steve brings his large-scale sculptures to life.
Steve’s sculptural work is deeply influenced by his desire to master the skilled trades and his passion for creative problem-solving. He finds immense satisfaction in every stage of the artistic process, from conceptualizing public art projects to designing fabrication plans and executing the hands-on work required to realize his vision.
His technical background in mechanical engineering and metal fabrication enables him to approach each project with a blend of creativity and precision. Steve’s work often involves a collaborative process with stakeholders to ensure that the final pieces reflect the needs and environments of public and corporate clients. He uses Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to develop technical solutions while allowing the artistic elements of his projects to evolve organically during fabrication.
Throughout his career, Steve has completed numerous public and corporate art commissions across the United States. His ability to manage large-scale projects, coupled with his hands-on approach to fabrication, has made him a sought-after artist for complex installations. Steve’s work is characterized by its bold use of materials—stone, steel, aluminum, and stainless steel—each piece reflecting his meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design.
One of Steve’s ongoing goals is to expand his portfolio with larger scale works, particularly in marble. His vision includes creating pieces that not only stand out for their aesthetic appeal but also demonstrate his technical prowess and creative versatility.
Beyond his studio work, Steve is committed to contributing to the local arts community in Lawrence. He actively participates in local art events and collaborates with other artists in the Warehouse Arts District. His journey from a career military officer to a full-time sculptor is a testament to his dedication and adaptability.
In his personal life, Steve finds joy in the support of his family. His wife, a retired wildland firefighter, and their shared commitment to caring for her parents, have been a driving force in his relocation and renewed focus on art. This sense of family and community is deeply ingrained in Steve’s work and life philosophy.
Steve Rands’ work is a unique fusion of technical skill and artistic vision. His sculptures, rooted in the skilled trades and enhanced by his military and engineering background, are a testament to his ability to transform raw materials into compelling works of art. From his studio in Lawrence, KS, Steve continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in metal and stone sculpture, creating pieces that inspire and captivate audiences across the country.
