In 1999, I got turned down over the phone for a press pass to the Rolling Stones

“In 1999, I got turned down over the phone for a press pass to the Rolling Stones show in Charlotte that night, and ten minutes later, got a phone call offering a press pass to the Elliott Smith show that same night at Tremont Music Hall. Elliott came onstage wearing a vintage Rolling Stones t-shirt. I still haven’t seen the Stones, but I still think I ended up where I was supposed to be that night. Elliott was really good that night. The crowd was so quiet and reverent, Elliott got spooked and thought that they weren’t into the show. So he just said, “Goodnight”, and that was it! He came out to sign autographs after the show. I talked to him for a few minutes. He was very nice, and didn’t talk much beyond a whisper. I still have the album he signed, “To Daniel, XO Elliott Smith.” A few years ago, I decided to scan my photos from that night. I finished about half-a-roll (I shot four rolls of film, that night), started looking at the photos, and just…. stopped. A flood of emotions really hit me. Hard. I still haven’t scanned the rest of the photos. I need to. Someday.”

I’d traveled out to Barcelona to photograph Elliott for the NME

“I’d traveled out to Barcelona to photograph Elliott for the NME, it was late November 1998.
I’ve got to be honest, I’d never heard of him and I was really getting weary of arsy indie musicians by that point.I’d slipped into the pop world by that stage and was getting used to stylists, make up artists, double kisses and fake smiles, I was expecting trouble from this dude.
Only the week before Liam Gallagher had squared up to me after I’d asked him for a picture with Brian Harvey (East17). He backed down in surprise as I threw my camera to one side to oblige, only to return moments later with a load of his cronies. But upon seeing I was still fired and ready to go, he started laughing and patronisingly patted me on the back, “You’re alright pal, you’re alright! ” Moronic monkey faced Manc, next time….

What I was doing for two or three years

“What I was doing for two or three years was taking a Polaroid every single day…and it just happened to be that day that he was playing. But there’s a better story: Modest Mouse was opening for Elliott Smith, and Isaac’s amp literally blew up on stage. At that time, all he had was one amp, and you know, we’re not making that much money. After the show Elliott Smith came up to us and he’s like, “Oh, man, you guys, that sucks,” and then he gave us a few hundred dollars to go buy another amp. And he wasn’t that popular then, either—it was like 1997 [1998]. He was a cool guy.”
