This is a Mystery quilt. Clues will be given every hour, starting at 10:00 AM Eastern on January 1, 2026. Clue # 4. This quilt finishes at 71″ x 92″ and is suitable for beginners. Look for a list of clue times at the bottom of this page.
To print this clue, use the green Print Friendly button below those clues. If that doesn’t work, try pressing down the CNTRL button and the P button at the same time. Or the COMMAND button and the P button if you are on a Mac.
Noise has always been a favorite way to tell the old year to vacate the premises. In Japan, temple bells ring 108 times to sweep away worldly troubles. In the United States, people bang pots and pans as if scaring off raccoons. Either way, the message is clear. Out with the old, in with the new.
In Germany, families watch the same short comedy sketch every New Year’s Eve. It has become as much a tradition as sauerkraut and fireworks. In Italy, towns erupt with church bells and bubbling Prosecco. In Thailand, the New Year water festival brings splashing, laughing, and love.
Quilters love the noise too. A sewing machine humming on January 1 is practically a song of hope. If stitches counted as music, some of us would make the Top 40. Some of us wouldn’t…
Making the 6 Big “I” Blocks
Assemble:
- (24) 6-1/2″ “H” blocks that you made in Clue Two
- (30) 6-1/2″ Background Squares
Sew an “H” block sideways between (2) 6-1/2″ Background squares. Make (12) of these 3-part units for the top and bottom of the Big “I” block. Press to the Background square. This unit should measure 6-1/2″ × 18-1/2″.

Sew (1) 6-1/2″ Background square between (2) small “I” blocks. Make (6) of these 3-part units for the middle of the Big “I” block. Press to the Background square. This unit should measure 6-1/2″ × 18-1/2″. Sew this unit between (2) 3-part top and bottom units as shown left.

Press from the back and square up to 18-1/2″ if necessary. The direction of your row seams doesn’t matter as this block will be put in a sashing. Make (6) blocks like the one below.

Our First Big I

Sewing Ahead
Assemble:
- (9) 5″ wide strips of the Outer Border fabric
- (9) 2-1/2″ wide strips of the binding fabric or leftover jelly roll strips
You will need some long strips to create the border and binding. To save time, sew all these strips end to end ahead of time. Working with each group individually, create 4 groups of LOONG strips. Trim seams to 1/4″ and press open. Miter the joins if you like by sewing the two strips right sides together at an angle as shown to left. Cut off the excess 1/4″ from the seam. Press the seam open.
