Across the world, the New Year is a moment to hope that the next twelve months are kinder, brighter, and maybe less chaotic. Colombians walk around the block with a suitcase to encourage future travel. In Turkey, people sprinkle salt at their doorways for peace and prosperity. In Ireland, families bang bread against the walls to chase away bad spirits.
In China, red decorations invite good luck. New clothes symbolize a fresh start. Plenty of quilters quietly approve of any tradition that gives them an excuse to buy more fabric. Wherever you are and however you celebrate, the New Year is a welcome chance to say hello to hope, joy, and maybe a new quilt project or two. After all, fabric never judges, and the New Year is always ready to be stitched into something wonderful.
Making The Rows
Assemble:
- (6) Big “I” blocks
- (6) Big “H” blocks
- (16) 2-1/2″ × 18-1/2″ Background rectangles
Alternating the Big “I” Blocks and the Big “H” blocks, sew them between (4) 2-1/2″ × 18-1/2″ Background rectangles as shown below. Press to the sashing rectangle. This row should measure 18-1/2″ × 62-1/2″. Make (2) Rows. These will be the 1st and 3rd row.

These rows will be sewn between sashing with cornerstones.
Making the Sashing
Assemble:
- (15) 2-1/2″ × 18-1/2″ Background rectangles
- (20) 2-1/2″ Background squares
Sew a 2-1/2″ Background square between (3) 2-1/2″ × 18-1/2″ Background rectangles and at both ends of the sashing. Make (5) sashings and press to the rectangle. Although it may seem odd to sew like fabrics together, it will help you keep the blocks straight. Because you are pressing the sashing seams in opposite directions, the blocks seams should just touch each other at the intersections. That helps lock them together, which keeps the quilt top lie flat. These sashings should measure 2-1/2″ × 62-1/2″.
