Food says hello to the New Year long before people do. In the American South, cooks rely on black-eyed peas, greens, and cornbread for luck, wealth, and the comfort of a full belly. In Japan, families enjoy toshikoshi soba, long noodles meant to encourage long life. The longer the noodle, the longer the life, so no one breaks their noodles on purpose.
In Greece, people bake a vasilopita, a sweet cake with a hidden coin inside. Whoever finds the coin gets good fortune. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, round fruits symbolize prosperity.
Quilters may find comfort in these traditions. After all, food and fabric both bring warmth and color to your home.
Making 60 Small “H” blocks
There are (60) “H” blocks in this quilt. These blocks are used to make the alternating blocks that give the illusion of movement. Here is how to make them.
Assemble:
- (60) 2-1/2″ × 15-1/2″ Jelly Roll rectangles. Cut each 2-1/2″ × 15-1/2″ Jelly Roll rectangle into (3) sections: (2) 2-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ sections and (1) 2-1/2″ square.
- (120) 2-1/2″ Background Squares

Sew the 2-1/2″ Jelly roll square between (2) 2-1/2″ Background squares. Press to the Jelly Roll square. Sew this 3-part unit between (2) 2-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Jelly Roll sections of the same fabric. Press to the rectangle. Sew this block in (3) rows as shown below.

You have several options when making this block. You can match all three colors, just change the middle color, or use three colors. I am keeping the colors consistent in the written pattern but you don’t have to. This is YOUR quilt. Make it the way you want it. Press your “H” blocks from the back so so you can fix any accidentally twisted seams and square them up to 6-1/2″. Make (60).
