Musical Diversity

As I was going through the playlists I have on my computer and phone, I noticed something. Almost all of the music I listen to on a regular basis is firmly in the “rock” genre. There are very few songs that don’t fall into that category, but not many. That realization was odd to me because it wasn’t always that way. There was a time when I was younger that I had an equal amount of music from multiple genres in my collection.

For example, the first two CDs I remember buying for myself were Garth Brooks’ In Pieces and Coolio’s It Takes a Thief (Hey! Fantastic Voyage is a good song! That turned out to be one of the two songs on that album that didn’t suck, but we can’t win them all).

Back then, when I was in high school, I listened to a little bit of everything. Rock? I listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Nirvana, and The Offspring. Country? I listened to Garth Brooks, John Michael Montgomery, and Alan Jackson. Rap? I listened to Snoop Dogg, Coolio, and Bone Thugs N Harmony. And many others besides these examples.

That made me wonder why I don’t listen to the other genres now.

As far as country music goes, I pretty much know the answer to that one. I will still listen to country music from the 90s now. It’s songs that are newer than that which are dicey. Especially the current country music. I live in a house with young girls who will play that stuff and I can’t handle it. Today’s country music is just pop music sung by people with southern accents. It’s horrible.

That left me to wonder about rap/hip hop/R&B.

There is a person where I work that plays newer songs in these areas and I’m forced to listen to them once or twice a week. I’m not a fan. Honestly, it all sounds the same to me. At one point she played three songs back to back to back where the artists rapped in the exact same rhythm. If they didn’t each have distinctly different voices, I would’ve sworn she had the song on repeat.

Since current music was out of the question, I went back to some of the stuff I used to listen to back in the day. As I mentioned, Coolio was a bust. Other than Fantastic Voyage and Gangsta’s Paradise, his music pretty much sucked. I’d heard a song or two of Snoop’s stuff from back then recently, so I listened to Bone instead. Overall, it was as good as I remembered it being, but that’s when I realized why I don’t listen to that genre very much anymore.

There’s a particular word that gets used a lot in rap that I don’t like. I know there’s millions of people who dislike it far more than I ever could, but I still don’t want to listen to it.

So, I guess that leaves me sticking around in the rock arena with occasional trips into 90s country.

Through the Never

I have a playlist in my car that hovers around 700 songs. It takes me about 30 minutes to get to or from work every day (if there’s no traffic….which there usually is), so having music in my car is a must. I also have to have a variety, hence the 700 songs. I’ll just start my car, hit the random button, and hit play. Most of the time, it’ll give me a good mix of songs.

A few days ago, however, it randomly picked 3 songs from Metallica’s Black Album to play back to back. It started with The Unforgiven, then Sad But True, and finished with Through the Never.

Once the final song began playing, a thought occurred to me, and that thought was “For the past 20-something years (25 to be exact as I just Googled it), this song has gotten the short end of the stick.”

When you think of Metallica songs, which one is the first one that pops into your head? If you’re anything like me, it’s Master of Puppets. Start thinking about other ones. Is Through the Never in the top 5? Top 10? Top 20? Hell, I’d be willing to bet that most people wouldn’t have it in their top 5 from the Black Album. Most people would probably name the other two I’ve already mentioned plus Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, and Nothing Else Matters.

To me, that’s a shame.

Now, I will admit that The Unforgiven is my favorite song on that album, but Through the Never is easily the second. And, the more I think about it, it kind of bothers me that it doesn’t get the love it deserves.

I may not change anyone’s mind with this post, but I hope you all at least give it a listen. It’s an awesome song.

My Weekly Soundtrack: Song Sequels

When you think of the word sequel, I’d say the first thing that pops into your head is movies, or maybe books. I doubt that you’d think of songs. Believe it or not, there are actually songs out there that have sequels.

This is the first of these that came out. It was off of 1991’s Black album. It’s The Unforgiven by Metallica.

The next song is the from the self-titled debut album in 1998: Voodoo by Godsmack.

In 1997, Metallica followed up The Unforgiven, on their album Reload, with this: The Unforgiven II.

In 2006, Godsmack released IV, which included their sequel Voodoo Too.

Apparently not wanting to be outdone, in 2008, on their album Death Magnetic, Metallica released a third Unforgiven.

What do you think people? Song sequels: good idea or bad idea?

My Weekly Soundtrack: 2/18/2014

Hello, everyone. Welcome to me.

It’s time for another edition of My Weekly Soundtrack. This week there will be a theme. My team lead at work has been going on for the past few workdays about song covers that are better than the originals. So, all of these songs are in that category, in my opinion. That doesn’t mean I don’t like the originals. I just think these versions are better.

Some of them have been on one of these lists before, but listen to them anyways. They’re awesome songs.

The first song this week is Last Kiss by Pearl Jam.

Second this week is Turn the Page by Metallica.

Our third song this week is Alien Ant Farm’s version of Smooth Criminal.

This week’s fourth song is Shout 2000 by Disturbed.

Seether’s take on Careless Whisper is fifth.

Careless Whisper isn’t the only George Michael song that was done better by someone else. Here’s Limp Bizkit covering Faith.

Last this week is Ugly Kid Joe’s take on Cats in the Cradle.

There you have it everyone. Hope you enjoy this week’s songs. Also, be sure and let me know which songs I may have missed with my list. Are there any covers out there that you think are better than the original?

My Weekly Soundtrack: 11/12/13

It’s time for me to post a soundtrack on a weird date….11/12/13. They said something about this on the local news this morning (because people are rushing to get married today just because of the date) and I couldn’t help but thinking, “Who cares?” There’s been a date like this every year since 2003 (1/2/03). There’ll be one next year, too (12/13/14). Granted, this won’t happen again after that for 100 years, but, still, who cares? It’s just another day…

There are no themes this week. Just songs that I’ve heard this week. Onto the list….

Up first is Hollow, by Submersed.

The second song for today is Enemy, by Sevendust.

Third is Pieces by Dark New Day.

Fourth is I Get It, by Chevelle.

The fifth song is Sorry, But Your Friends Are Hot by Zebrahead.

Metallica’s Hero of the Day is up sixth. I know a lot of Metallica fans didn’t care for Load, but I like it. I don’t care much for ReLoad, but I do like Load.

The seventh, and final, song is called Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing and Rides the Bomb to Hell, by The Offspring.

My Weekly Soundtrack – 10/8

It’s Tuesday again, and you know what that means. It means it’s time for your Tuesday spankings. Everyone line up…..

What’s that? We don’t do that? Hmmm. Then what the hell did I do on Tuesday? Oh well. I guess until I can remember what it was, I’ll just play these songs for you. Don’t worry. I’ll think of it eventually.

My Weekly Soundtrack: Accidental Vacation

I’m sure that one or two of you noticed that I didn’t do one of these posts last week. It’s not because I didn’t want to, or that I didn’t have time to. It’s because my internet was shut off (On a side note: being broke sucks ass). I was able to keep in touch with a few of you through email (which I was able to do at work), but other than that, last week was internet free for me.

For this week’s soundtrack, I’m just going with songs that have been stuck in my head lately. I wrote a song about it. Want to hear it? Here it goes!
