The Seven Sceptres: Champions and the Chaotic Dead

A few posts ago, I said that I’d been spending a lot of time recently working on my publishable projects. Well, one of them is finished and the Kindle version is live on Amazon. It’s called Champions and the Chaotic Dead, and it’s a follow up to The Seven Sceptres anthology. Cowritten by my writing partner, Matticus, this book was long in the making and it’s something that we’re very proud of.

We’d appreciate it if you’d all give it a try. Thank you.

Yesterday, I saw an almost 60 year old woman throw a temper tantrum that’s normally reserved for spoiled 5 year olds who don’t get a toy at the store. All because the delivery driver, who brought us lunch that our company bought for us, accidentally forgot the cookies that were supposed to come with her FREE LUNCH. She threw such a bitch fit that our supervisor took an extra 15 minutes on his lunch to run up to the restaurant to get the cookies that got left behind.

The Last Son

Tombstone is one of my favorite movies. I absolutely love it, and you can say whatever you want about Val Kilmer’s career before and after, but he was pure perfection in this movie as Doc Holliday.

With that being said, I’m not generally a fan of westerns. Sure, I liked the Young Guns movies, and 3:10 to Yuma was pretty good (the Russell Crowe/Christian Bale remake. I’ve never seen the original), but overall, I just never really got into them.

I think the reason I never really got into westerns is the same reason I don’t like horror movies: the plots are basically the same. Let’s face it, every horror movie ever made has the exact same plot: someone or something is going around killing stupid people. Sure, the details differ from movie to movie, but the basic premise is always the same.

Granted, westerns aren’t as bad as that, but most of them are similar. Most of them, like Tombstone and Young Guns, are revenge stories. Not that there’s anything wrong with revenge stories, but a little variety would be appreciated.

That’s why, when I found The Last Son while looking through Hulu, I was intrigued when I read this description: Sam Worthington stars as Isaac LeMay, a murderous outlaw who learns he is cursed by a prophecy: one of his children will kill him. To prevent this, he hunts down each of his estranged children including long- lost son Cal (Colson Baker aka musician Machine Gun Kelly). With bounty hunters and Sheriff Solomon (Thomas Jane) on his tail, LeMay must find a way to stop his children and end the curse.

It wasn’t technically about revenge, plus the curse aspect gave it a supernatural twist. I decided to watch the trailer. The trailer made it look pretty good, so I watched the movie. Like so many others before it, the trailer was much better than the movie.

I don’t want to get into too much detail, so I don’t spoil it for anyone who wants to watch it later, but I didn’t like it. The movie took way too long to develop. While there were a few gunfights, there weren’t as many as I thought there would be, as there should have been. Most of the time, all the people acted robotic, with very little emotion. Unless that emotion was anger, of course.

I will give the movie one thing. It did surprise me a little. Halfway through the movie, I thought the movie would end one of two ways. It actually ended up being a combination of the two, which was kinda cool. Not cool enough to save the movie, but still kinda cool.

If you enjoy westerns, maybe you’ll end up liking this movie more than me, but I still would recommend passing on this one.

Checking In

Here we are, once more. Another post about this being the first one back from an extended absence in my on again/ off again relationship with blogging.

It’s been around three months since my last post. Things have been pretty busy for me during that time. Work, family time, the kids’ sports, etc. I’ve also dedicated a lot of what little free time I’ve had to my novels. Yes, you read that correctly. Novels, as in plural, more than one. Some of them are closer to being done than others. I’m hoping that the one closest to being done will be published within the next few months, but life has a way of messing with plans, so I don’t want to promise anything yet.

Because the majority of my free time is being used on my novel writing, all of my other free time activities have taken a back seat. I watch almost no TV and movies anymore unless it’s with my wife and/or daughters. The only video game I’ve played recently is Left 4 Dead 2, which I play with Mrs. Revis when we have the time. And I have read very little lately. The only book I’ve finished recently is the new Harlan Coben novel. I’ve only read a handful of posts on here in the past couple of months. Mostly, the only reading I’ve done lately is reading comics on either Marvel Unlimited or DC Infinite while I’m on breaks at work, and that’s only because I can get through a whole issue on my tiny ten minute break.

Maybe I’ll get back to posting on here regularly. Maybe I won’t. If the past is any indication, it’s only a matter of time before I start back up. Until then, keep up your good work, my friends.

Haunted Angel Part 2

I shot three quick bursts at the creature. After taking nine bullets to the head, it simply laughed at me. The lights suddenly flickered and the creature was not alone. Demonic versions of my entire team now surrounding me. ” Oh… fuck , ” I muttered, as a sense of utter dread overcame me.

Panicking, I began firing at the entire room, not really aiming at anything specific. About the only thing I accomplished is shooting out the light. I quickly flipped on my night – vision goggles. Unfortunately, they were still there , but it seemed like they couldn’t see me, because they were all standing around looking confused. One of them swiped at air. Crouching down, I slowly started to back away as quitly as I could. Apparently, I wasn’t quiet enough.

They began stalking me. Moving ever closer, they took random swings in hopes of finding me. ” Ahh,” Lead said. “He’s figured out that we are blind to him. Does it feel good knowing that you have a tactical advantage over us? It doesn’t matter. You’re still not going to make it out of this room alive.”

He’s trying to scare me into giving away my position. Silently, I took off my headset and threw it across the room. Four of them stopped and started to move in that direction. Lead looked right at me. ” Did you really think that would work, Angel?” he asked.

The door was not far. I needed to make a distraction. Pulling out a grenade, I pulled the pin and threw it in front of Lead. I took off running. The grenade went off and I was momentarily blinded. Dammit! It was a flashbang. The demons groaned in frustration and I ran right into the door. I felt the blood start running out of my nose. After feeling around for the knob, I found it and got my ass out of there.

Locking it behind me, I took off running again. I heard the door shatter behind me, but I didn’t turn around. I kept running. Taking many twists and turns as possible, I began to think I had lost them. It seemed as though my problems were over, but unfortunately, I had forgot one critical element in my mad dash. There were still soldiers in this place. That thought had escaped my mind until I ran into a whole squadron of them.

One of them yelled for me to stop. Instead, I shot him in the throat as I dove for cover. Bullets whizzed by me. A few even managed to nick me, but none were even close to serious. Kneeling behind a large box, I chucked a grenade off to my right. Pivoting left, I used the ensuing explossion to cover my gunfire. Three down, about 30 more to go. At this rate those monsters won’t have to kill me. These soldiers will do that for them.

While I was trying to think of a way out of this impossible mess. Shouts of terror came from the soldiers behind me. I dared a look. The three soldiers I had just killed had turned into demons and started killing the others. The entire courtyard filled with the sounds of gunfire and explosions. Shit! Not only do I have to get out of this place in the middle of a war, I have to do it without killing anyone else or they’ll turn into one of those monsters.

“There he is!”

Turning, I saw my team coming after me. There was no way out. I was dead.
