Education & Exchanges

Overview

Our nations share deep cultural ties exemplified by over 40 million Americans of Mexican descent who cherish their roots and cultural traditions, and millions of Americans who visit Mexico each year for tourism, study, or business.  A key part of our commitment to strengthen bilateral ties between our nations is expanding opportunities for interaction in the educational and cultural spheres.

The United States Mission in Mexico oversees and implements several programs sponsored by the American people for Mexican citizens to support young leaders, students, civil society, journalists, teachers, and entrepreneurs.  These programs focus on building people-to-people relations to foster mutual understanding, enhance professional partnerships and collaboration, and strengthen a healthy exchange of ideas across all sectors between our two countries.

For generations, Mexicans and Americans have benefited from a range of U.S.-sponsored educational and cultural programs.  These programs symbolize the breadth and depth of our most consequential bilateral partnership.  More importantly, the personal ties forged during these programs endure for decades and alumni continue to positively contribute to their communities.  Their successes symbolize the lasting partnership between the people of Mexico and the United States.

Additionally, the United States has a long tradition of welcoming Mexicans at public and private educational institutions, where they contribute to the intellectual and cultural dynamism of campus life.  We are committed to expanding the numbers of academic exchanges between our nations to reflect the strength of our bilateral relations. Mexican citizens interested in studying in the United States are urged to visit one of the twenty three EducationUSAMexico  advising centers.  EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network that promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States.  The EducationUSA Advisors provide free and unbiased information on U.S. higher education opportunities to Mexican students. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Exchange Alumni – Resources and Opportunities

We strengthen bilateral ties between our nations by expanding academic and cultural exchanges. Participation in an exchange program is not a one-time event, but rather the beginning of an exchange of ideas that continues throughout a participant’s life.  We want to make sure we remain engaged with our alumni, and develop ways to connect with each other, share opportunities, and continue building bridges among our communities.

With approximately 15k + alumni of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs, Mexico has one of the largest and most diverse U.S.-government exchange alumni communities in the world.  Over the years, hundreds of former exchange program participants have risen to important positions in Mexico, including two presidents, one presidential candidate, local governors, and multiple legislators, as well as luminaries from the media, civil society, and business fields.

Join the Exchange Alumni community portal and open the door to a world of resources and funding opportunities to help you build on the skills you gained during your exchange program:

  • Access academic journals and articles through EBSCO, JSTOR, and Libby, among other academic and research resources through eLibraryUSA (make sure to first visit an American Space in your region to set up an account).
  • Find and connect with fellow Exchange Alumni locally and globally.
  • Collaborate in group discussions, search for and post upcoming career opportunities, update your alumni contact information, and more!

For Exchange Alumni community portal log-in questions, reach out to: alumniwebsite@state.gov.

In addition, get up-to-date information on upcoming events and Exchange Alumni highlights in our quarterly international newsletter, and reach out to the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to find out more about funding opportunities like the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF).

Don’t forget to connect with us online through LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, sharing your successes by using #ExchangeAlumni when you post. Do you have a story you’d like to share? Feel free to reach out directly at exchangealumni@state.gov.

SPORTS DIPLOMACY

From the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Sports Diplomacy initiative promotes sport as a tool of cultural diplomacy. It uses the universal power of sport to bring people, communities, and both countries closer together, fostering mutual understanding, respect for diversity, and cross-cultural exchange.

Through the exchange of American athletes or coaches to Mexico (the “Sports Envoys” program) and the exchange of young Mexican athletes and coaches to the United States (“Sports Visitors”), Sports Diplomacy seeks to create personal connections, promote cultural understanding, and build bridges between societies.
