Webinars and workshops are built from 30 years of professional teaching experience, alongside up-to-date research, to improve capacity for outdoor play and learning for all children during the school day.

    • Literacy Outdoors

      Learning environments influence how children engage with academic learning at school. This session will review the importance of outdoor play for introducing, consolidating, and practicing foundational literacy skills in the early years and beyond. Participants will articulate action plans for designing differentiated K-7 literacy routines that are engaging, motivating, and responsive to classroom screening and assessment data.

    • Instructional Routines in the Outdoor Classroom

      Learn how to structure outdoor learning environments in ways that restore and protect relationships, while creating joyful classroom cultures of wonder. Leave with strategies for personalizing high yield routines that set the table for effective and engaged academic learning outdoors.

      Learn the history and affordances of loose parts, be inspired by the use of loose parts, and learn more about the role of the adult when curating materials that can spark mathematical thinking, scientific inquiry and creative storytelling.

      When OPAL is supported in the elementary school context, the conditions for risky play can emerge. This session will review the research supporting outdoor risky play, alongside practical implementation strategies and tools for school success.

      This session is for teachers who are ready to complicate how we engage children intellectually in learning that is relevant, culturally responsive, and interconnected to the lands we learn with, from, and on.

      This full day workshop provides a clear and actionable plan for school gardens. Practical tips and tricks are shared along with an actionable plan for transforming your school garden into a meaningful and shared space of learning.

      This ten-part series offers capacity building for cross-curricular learning located in school gardens. Each session will unpack systemic barriers alongside practical and cost-effective solutions that are scaffolded for sustainability.
