(Colossians 3:22-24)
One of Martin Luther King's famous quotes states, “If a man is given the responsibility to be a street sweeper, he should do his job as Michelangelo did his painting, or as Shakespeare wrote his poetry. He should sweep streets so that all the inhabitants of heaven and earth pause and say, ‘Here a great street sweeper has done his job well.’” King's words highlight the importance of every job, emphasizing that it should be approached with care and dedication.
We often observe that some people work hard when they are supervised but tend to become relaxed or lazy when they are not. As Christians, however, we are called to work diligently and strive for excellence, even going the extra mile. The Bible illustrates this principle through the example of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Although he was “only” the son of a widow with humble beginnings, 1 Kings 11:28 says, "Jeroboam was a talented man; when Solomon saw that the young man was an accomplished worker, he made him the leader of the work crew from the tribe of Joseph."
Jeroboam’s story serves as a reminder that when we work with the utmost quality, we draw attention and earn the trust to take on greater responsibilities.
If you find yourself complaining about your work, feeling it is beneath your potential, don’t despair! Remain motivated to work in a way that glorifies God’s name, and aim to complete every task to the best of your ability. Remember, successful individuals are those who perform their work with above-average quality.
