*READING*
[1:1] The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
[1:2] The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.
[1:3] So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son.
[1:4] And the LORD said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
[1:5] And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.
[1:6] And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
[1:7] But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.
[1:8] Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.
[1:9] Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.
[1:10] Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
[1:11] Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

*MESSAGE*
*Metaphors and parables are often used in Scriptures as illustrations to communicate important information and teach practical lessons to God's people. Our passage focuses on Israel's uncontrolled, and abominable penchant for unholy relationships with idolatrous nations despite God's love and faithfulness to His covenant with their forebears. Perpetually and impudently, Israel had unequally yoked herself with heathen nations despite God's several warnings through His prophets and servants. They went into idolatrous practices with Egypt and Assyria and vexed the Lord with their abominations.*
*In our passage, God instructed Hosea to marry a whore (prostitute) and have children with her. The essence is to show God's love to Israel despite her unfaithfulness and idolatry. The children were named to send God's message to the nation: Jezreel (future punishment), Lo-Ruhama (not loved), and Lo-Ammi (not my people). Gomer leaves Hosea and gets married to another man. Still, the prophet repurchased her, illustrating God's love and redemption for Israel.*
*By the same token, when God's people enter into unscriptural relationships with the world, they vex the Lord. Unequal yoke in marriage, business, dressing, worship and religious practice are condemned in God's word. God abhors every form of sin and sexual immorality of any form. Taking things for granted and leaning on limited knowledge and dealings with people have resulted in the fall and painful regrets of many one-time faithful and committed believers. The Scripture counsels that let him that thinks he stands watch lest he falls. His word and instructions must be our guiding principles in all we do.*
*God's love and faithfulness to His covenant made Him to still desire Israel. He's still reaching out to every sinner and backslider today. There is, therefore, hope for repentant sinners and backsliders as they embrace the salvation that comes through Christ. And for every believer, God's love demands our faithfulness and commitment to the end.*

TITLE:
*THAT DAY IS COMING*
KEY VERSE:
*"But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap."*
(Malachi 3:2).
*TEXT:*
MALACHI 3:1-7 (KJV)
"1. Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
2. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
3. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
4. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
5. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
6. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
7. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?"
*THE MESSAGE:*
It was Franz Kafka, a 20th century writer who wrote, _*"Only our concept of time makes it possible for us to speak of the day of judgment by that name; in reality it is summary court in perpetual session."*_
By implication, he suggests that we should be able to judge our actions every day before that final day.
At the time Prophet Malachi wrote, the Jews, back from exile, had started experiencing various forms of adversity and spiritual decline. The people had started doubting God's love for them and wondered aloud if there was still any profit in serving God.
The prophet had to admonish both the people and the priests of the inescapable demand for repentance and certainty of God's impending judgment. The temple had been rebuilt and the sacrifices and feast had been re-instituted. A general reading of the law had been reintroduced by Ezra.
But subtle backsliding particularly among the priests and the people had been observed. On the whole, the general climate was that of spiritual neglect and complacency. The people were reminded of the day of the Lord's coming.
As we turn the pages of history, we are not in doubt about the imminence of the end of time and the end of life, either way. No one can pretend not to understand the implication of the series of warning concerning readiness for this great day.
Christians and even non-believers know that we do not have much time left to remain undecided concerning where to spend our eternity. Those who deliberately ignore the warnings and reject the offer of salvation through Christ would have no one but themselves to blame for the eternal consequence of their wrong choice.
Believers as _*"wise virgins"*_ must choose to seek for more grace, walk in holiness and be prepared for the coming of our Lord Jesus. The Bridegroom will come to take His people away before the period of divine fury is unleashed on the disobedient world.

*READING*
[19:1] And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
[19:2] And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
[19:3] And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
[19:4] And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
[19:5] And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
[19:6] And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
[19:7] And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
[19:8] And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
[19:9] And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
[19:10] For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

*MESSAGE*
*Among the few celebrated personalities in history who converted to Christianity was Constantine the Great. He later became the Roman Emperor from 306 to 337CE. His acceptance of Christ was dramatic, reportedly motivated in part by a vision he experienced during a battle in Rome in 312CE. He then went ahead to Christianize the entire Empire. He sought to prove that his encounter with Christ that gave him salvation was real.*
*In the annals of Bible narratives, Zacchaeus was another famous character who, against all odds, earnestly sought and met the Lord. Challenged by his small frame and the throng that usually followed our Lord, Zacchaeus resorted to an unusual ploy to catch a glimpse of the Saviour as He passed through Jericho. He took a vantage position atop a tree. Although he was disdained by the Jews as a tax collector, "a man that is a sinner," the Lord noticed his genuine thirst for pardon and salvation and granted his wish. It is not in Christ's character to reject transgressors who sincerely approach Him for forgiveness and deliverance from the power of the devil and the sin that has taken them captive. He came to seek such lost people. Their status in society is of scant consideration, as long as they humbly admit their wrongdoings and forsake them and acknowledge the lordship of Jesus as Zacchaeus did.*
*Those who have not obtained and savoured the Mercy of Christ through the new birth encounter or have backslidden, can learn from Zacchaeus. They should not be deterred by the aspersions their neighbours, schoolmates, colleagues and kinsmen are casting on them. Nor should they be discouraged by physical disabilities or socioeconomic restraints to stay away from the One who has declared that He is their Friend. He is not human beings who are influenced by social media gossip. He knows all men and women intimately and does not need telltale reports on anyone.*
