Project Planning Overview

Plan projects, programs or an entire portfolio and keep your projects on time and on budget

ProjectManager offers five different project views for planning: Gantt chart, Sheet, Task List, Kanban and Calendar—the most comprehensive planning view, however, is the Gantt chart.

Project tasks created in one project view will appear in all other views. Project and resource data entered in any project view will appear in dashboards and reports.

Tip: Set project access restrictions to increase the security of your project plans.

Gantt Charts

One of the most popular ways to start planning a new project on our software is on the Gantt chart. This is a powerful planning tool that project managers and project teams can use to stay organized and on track throughout each project phase.

Once you've created a new project, you can:

  • Add tasks and task details on the left column
  • Add due dates, duration, planned start date, planned finish date and more
  • Customize your Gantt columns to see only what's relevant to your project and drag and drop to schedule tasks at various stages
  • Use the task information panel to add additional details such as milestones, dependencies and more

Kanban Boards

Another way to plan your project is on our kanban boards. This is a visual way to plan your project and you can divide the board into various customized stages. As you plan your project, feel free to add tasks directly on the board and drag them as they flow through each phase.

Workload Charts

Another important part of project planning is understanding your team's workload so they can work efficiently. The workload chart is an ideal way to plan who is assigned to certain tasks to make sure no one is under or over-allocated. If one team member has too many tasks, you can reassign tasks directly from the workload chart.

Tip! In addition to using the workload chart, you can track and submit time directly through our timesheets.

Roadmaps

Our roadmap is the ideal place to plan and oversee your portfolio of projects on a familiar Gantt view. You can see all project schedules in real time from start to finish. On the left, you'll see the spreadsheet view of tasks that are housed under the corresponding projects. On the right, you'll see the Gantt where you can make adjustments as the project evolves.

Calendars

The project calendar is the familiar calendar view that's particularly helpful for project planning. You can create and view tasks and meetings directly on the calendar view for each planning and organization.

Dashboards

One essential part of project planning is regularly referencing project data to make sure you're on track. We have project dashboards and portfolio dashboards that automatically take data across the software and display metrics on overall project health, cost, workload, progress, tasks and time.

Reports

Regular reporting can help keep your project plan on track. As needed, you can generate and download various reports on your project with team members or stakeholders. All project data from the software automatically feeds into the report so you know they'll be completely accurate.
