Avowed Gun Mage Build Overview
The Gun Mage is all about mixing raw damage with potent spellcasting. At its core, the build centers around using guns including Pistols and the Arquebus, paired with a versatile grimoire that unlocks elemental spells such as fire, ice, and shock. This combination lets you adapt to any situation. With the option to weapon swap, you can seamlessly transition between ranged physical attacks and area-of-effect magic, making the Gun Mage both dynamic and adaptable in various combat scenarios.

Who Should Play The Gun Mage Build in Avowed?
You should play the Gun Mage build for Avowed if you like a versatile combat build for any situation. With the Gun Mage, you easily swap between long-range magical attacks and precision gunplay. For example, while your musket can pick off enemies from a distance, a fast-reloading pistol acts as a perfect finisher for low-health targets. This build also does a great job of controlling the battlefield, using spells to ignite, electrocute, or freeze enemies, setting them up for devastating finishers. Plus, with the high attack damage and stun buildup of the arquebus you can hit enemies hard, especially in the early game.
Gun Mage Build Pros and Cons
Pros
- Great Single Target and Area Damage
- Excellent Crowd Control with Tanglefoot and Frost Accumulation
- Play from a distance
- Extremely fun and flashy to play
Cons
- Glass Cannon build that can easily go down if you’re not careful
- Starts slow until you get more skill points and better weapons
- Requires frequent weapon swapping to cast spells while firing guns
- Reloading guns can be slow until you unlock Quick Switch Rank 2

Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Gun Mage Build in Avowed is Aumaua, as they have the best early damage spike in the game thanks to +2 Might at the start of the game. Their large size and height also makes it easy to spot enemies at a distance.
Another solid option would be the Elf Race for their combination of +1 Perception and +1 Dexterity, which will increase weapon range, reload speed and attack speed.
Best Background Choice
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Arcane Scholar is the best background for the Gun Mage Build in Avowed.
Throughout the game, Arcane Scholar frequently unlocks extra dialogue lines in conversations involving legal matters, arcane theory, historical events, and occult phenomena. When NPCs discuss ancient ruins, magical artifacts, or scholarly disputes, your background gives you informed responses that other origins lack.
High starting Perception helps to improve range for both Wand and Guns, and High Intellect allows you to cast more spells and use more abilities via increased Maximum Essence. If survivability concerns you, consider reallocating a point or two into Constitution before starting, but overall, the Arcane Scholar path works beautifully for magic-focused characters.
Best Gun Mage Attributes
For the Gun Mage build, attribute allocation is key:
- Dexterity: The primary attribute for this build. Increased dexterity means faster reload speeds for both your arabus and pistol, allowing you to maintain a relentless attack pace.
- Might: Invest in might to boost overall damage. This attribute increases the effectiveness of all physical attacks.
- Intellect: While not as crucial as dexterity or might, intellect is still important. It increases your essence pool, ensuring you have enough resources to cast your powerful spells.

Best Weapons for the Gun Mage Build
For the Gun Mage build, the best weapons are the Magic Mistol or Caeroc’s Pride Pistols, combined with a Grimoire of Greater Elements and the unique One Last Trick arquebus.
Magic Mistol
- Base Effects:
- Infused Shot – Power Attacks deal very high stun.
- Foe-Seeker – Bullets seek and target enemies.
- Best Enchantment:
- Do not upgrade
The Magic Mistol is a very powerful pistol for this build which inflicts high stun and also seeks out nearby enemies to target. You get this pistol fairly late in the game, but its huge stun potential is amazing. Using the Quick Switch skill you can fire off your Arquebus, then switch to this to unleash a ton of stun build up on bosses. I do not recommend upgrading this weapon with an enchantment as it loses its single-target stun potential if you do.

Caeroc’s Pride
One of the earliest unique weapons you can pick up in Avowed is the powerful Caeroc’s Pride pistol, which is obtained in Dawn Shore near the harbor where you land after completing the game’s tutorial. This weapon not only deals bonus shock damage but can also be enchanted to trigger chain lightning effects, making it a devastating finisher. You will need to defeat a relatively powerful smuggler camp in order to get this weapon so make sure you come prepared for a fight!
- Base Effects:
- Distant Thunder – Power Attacks deal high Shock Accumulation
- Shocking Last – Hits deal +10% bonus Shock Damage
- Best Enchantment:
- Wrath of the Storm – Killing an enemy with this weapon has a 25% chance to cast Crackling Bolt

Grimoire of Greater Elements
I recommend using a Grimoire of Greater Elements for the Gun Mage build, as this gives you access to a variety of low cost damaging and defensive spells, including Fireball, Blizzard, Crackling Bolt and Bristling Frost.
One Last Trick
- BaseEffects
- Ricochet: Bullets bounce to hit an additional enemy within range.
- Gunnery: +20% Reload Speed
- Best Enchantment
- Trick Shot: Bullets bounce to hit 2 additional enemies within range.
After blasting through the game’s first zone, you’ll want to quickly upgrade to The Last Trick, a unique arquebus variant obtained from the Steel Resolve side quest in the second zone. This weapon comes with a +20% Reload Speed bonus which is extremely helpful when you want to power through your shots and take down tough opponents quickly, plus your shots can bounce to one additional target for even more damage!

Other Weapons
Your choice of Grimoire for this build comes down to mostly taste as well as the options you have available at the time. Another favorite option for Grimoires is Boethel’s Grimoire, which will give you access to some powerful defensive spells early on including Corrosive Siphon and Arcane Veil.

Best Armor for the Gun Mage Build
The best armor for the Gun Mage build is the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance, Ninaguath’s Gruesome Grasp gloves, and Warmage’s Boots.
Robes Of Surpassing Brilliance
- Bonus Effect:
- Overseeing: +15% area of effect damage
- Enchantment:
- Innate Talent: +40 Maximum Essence
The Robes of Surpassing Brilliance are the best armor for a Wizard build in Avowed due to the Overseeing effect, which grants +15% bonus area of effect damage, and the Innate Talent bonus, increasing Maximum Essence by 40. Both of these effects are excellent bonuses for any spell caster. You can find the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance just south of the Ancient Lakebed location in the Shatterscarp region. This is a light armor chest, so you will have less protection when compared to medium armor, unfortunately.

Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp
- Bonus Effect:
- +10% Ability Cast Speed
- Enchantment:
- Rymrgand’s Touch: +20% Frost Damage
The best gloves for the Wizard build in Avowed is Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp. This powerful armor piece is amazing for a spellcaster that focuses on Frost damage, with +20% Frost Damage bonus plus an extra +10% Ability cast speed, helping you to cast all of your spells even faster. Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp is a late game quest reward earned from the Homecoming side quest in the Galawain’s Tusk region.

Warmage’s Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- +15 Maximum Essence
- Enchantment:
- Arcane Step: Dodging has a 10% chance to restore 20 Essence.
The Warmage’s Boots are a very nice option for Spell casters in Avowed, not only boosting our Maximum Essence, which lets us cast more spells, but also restoring Essence potentially when we dodge. Dodging is a valid way to avoid damage on this build, so you’ll be dodging around anyway – might as well get some free Essence back in the process!

Other Armor Options
The Gambeson of the Grand Empire is another solid choice for a Gun Build, thanks to the Greater Gunnery effect, which improves Reload Speed by 15%. To obtain the Gambeson, you must help Leoflaed and Glaedwine escape in the Escape Plan side quest found in the first region of Dawnshore. You will then see them later on near the entrance of Thirdborn in the Shatterscarp region. Speak to them here and they will give you the Gambeson of the Grand Empire.

The Tranton Family Greaves, also found in Emerald Stair, provide an additional +10% movement speed boost, which stacks with the breastplate mentioned above, along with a 20% increase in dodge distance, making it easier to evade melee enemies. This added dodge range ensures that even when enemies close in, you can quickly reposition and continue dealing damage without taking hits.

Best Gun Mage Accessories
The best accessories for the Gun Mage build in Avowed are the Thirdborn Tira Nui Badge, Disciple’s Ring, and Ring of Elemental Balance. The Thirdborn Amulet provides a large boost to your Might Stat, allowing your spells and weapons to deal more damage, while the Disciple’s ring provides a huge boost to Maximum Essence, and the Elemental Balance ring increases our Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation.
Thirdborn Tira Nui Badge
- The Might of Thirdborn: +3 Might
This unique Trinket provides one of the largest stat bonuses in the game, +3 Might, helping to directly increase the damage of all of our spells and weapon attacks. Keeping in mind the soft cap for attribute points, this will allow you to hit 10 Might very easily, then put more points into other helpful attributes such as Intellect for more Maximum Essence or Dexterity for faster cast and reload speed.

Disciple’s Ring
- Greater Innate Talent: +60 Maximum Essence
The Disciple’s Ring is by far the best ring accessory for any spellcaster build in Avowed, providing a massive boost of +60 total essence. Use this to maximize your Essence pool to cast more abilities before you need to recharge.

Ring of Elemental Balance
- Elemental Balance: +10% Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation
The Ring of Elemental Balance is perfect for any caster build focused on Elemental effects, as it will help you more quickly build up those powerful Elemental status effects of Fire, Frost, and Shock. Frost is generally the best as it will completely freeze enemies in place, allowing you to break them for bonus damage.

Best Gun Mage Skills
The Gun Mage build draws from multiple class trees, with a focus on Ranger Skills and Wizard Skills:
Ranger Skills
The Ranger Skill Tree emphasizes precision, mobility, and stealth, catering to both ranged sharpshooters and agile melee fighters. The recommended Ranger Tree skills are:
- Tanglefoot (Rank 1) – A must-have active skill that roots enemies in place, allowing you to control crowds and set up your attacks. It’s especially effective when used in tandem with your companion, as Marius can also utilize this skill, or Kai can stun to also relieve pressure.
- Marksmanship (Rank 3) – Increases damage when using guns (and bows), complementing your Pistol and Arquebus attacks.
- Steady Aim (Rank 2) – Slows down time while aiming down sights, letting you land precise, high-damage critical hits.
- Quick Switch (Rank 2) – Increases your Equip Speed by 50% at Rank 1 and automatically reloads guns in your inactive loadout after 3 seconds at Rank 2.
- Staggering Shot (Rank 3) – Power Attacks with bows and guns deal +40% Stun at Rank 1, +70% Stun at Rank 2, and +90% Stun at Rank 3. Combine this with Barbaric Shout to fully stun most enemies in one shot!
Wizard Skills
The Wizard Skill Tree is the primary source of elemental area-of-effect damage and battlefield manipulation. The recommended Wizard Tree skills are:
- Arcane Veil (Rank 3) – Invokes a powerful arcane shield that makes spell casting Uninterruptable and increases damage reduction by 25% at Rank 1, reflects arrows and similar projectiles at Rank 2, and knocks back Melee Attackers at Rank 3. The Ultimate in spellcaster defense.
- Corrosive Siphon (Rank 3) – This ability heals you while also stunning enemies, and giving you a ton of Temporary Health which adds to your survival. Use this on cooldown to build up that temporary health shield!
- Grimoire Mastery (Rank 1) – This unlocks the spells on your Grimoire. More ranks can be unlocked for more advanced Grimoires but generally are not necessary.
- Crackling Bolt (Rank 3) – Conjures a powerful bolt of electricity that bounces between enemies, dealing high Shock Accumulation and Stun. Improving ranks increases the amount of bounces.
- Bristling Frost (Rank 3) – The caster is surrounded by protective frost that increases Damage Reduction and deals Frost Accumulation to enemy melee attackers.
- Harvest Essence (Rank 3) – Essence fragments dropped by defeated enemies restore up to 4 times as much essence.
- Secret of Rime (Rank 1) – Increases the amount of Frost Accumulation you deal by 20% at Rank 1 and 35% at Rank 2.
Fighter Skills
The Fighter Skill Tree for Avowed focuses on close-quarters dominance, durability, and crowd control using physical force. The recommended Fighter Tree skills are:
- Constant Recovery (Rank 1) – After taking damage, slowly regenerate 50% of the last amount of Health lost.
- Toughness (Rank 1) – Increases your Maximum Health by 20%.
- Barbaric Shout (Rank 3) – This massively increases your Stun potential which is great when combined with Pistol or Arquebus attacks at range. Use Rank 2 to get some temporary health and Rank 3 to increase the duration. Note that Rank 2 does add a Taunt effect, so its best to use this skill before combat actually begins.

Gun Mage Combat Tips
Here are some tactical tips to make the most of your Gun Mage build:
- Environmental Advantages: Keep an eye out for environmental elements like shock plates that can be triggered by your pistol’s bonus shock damage. These can be used to solve puzzles or add extra damage during combat.
- Prioritize Weaker Targets: From a safe distance, eliminate the weakest enemies first using your high-damage, slowed-down aimed shots. This strategy minimizes the number of threats before they can close in.
- Stun and Execute: For larger enemies or bosses, use your companion (such as Kai or a bear pet) to tank damage while you target weak spots. Build up stun potential with precise hits and, when fully stunned, unleash a devastating special charge attack.
- Leverage Your Spells: When enemies group together or when facing more formidable foes, cast area-of-effect elemental spells to inflict widespread damage or control the battlefield. Skills like Tangle Foot can lock down groups, ensuring your spells hit more effectively.
- Switch Weapons Wisely: Use the fast-reloading pistol for quick finishers on low-health enemies. Its rapid-fire capability complements the heavy, high-damage attacks from the arabus, letting you adjust your strategy on the fly.

Best Companions for the Gun Mage
- Kai – Kai’s Fire and Ire ability to taunt enemies, and his second wind make him a reliable tank, which deals decent damage and stun thanks to the low cooldown of Fire and Ire. His ability to pull aggro from enemies and take melee or ranged pressure off of your ranged character is invaluable.
- Giatta – Her healing and Accelerate abilities offer powerful utility, granting extra damage and free healing in and out of combat. Accelerate is especially powerful allowing you to fire off your weapons and abilities even faster.
