Thanks, looks mostly good besides two comments. Though it does beg the question of whether this delayed metric name removal is worth it for all the extra complexity and confusion it is causing.

This whole grouping step (same as I had in my variant) was the main thing I was a bit unsure about, since it introduces extra memory overhead for everyone (even if small), even though it's only necessary for handling some very uncommon edge cases.
So I wonder if we should have a more efficient happy path without extra allocations, like the existing ContainsSameLabelset(), and only falling back to this merge algorithm if that is true?

Yeah I have done so; also I check for duplicates timestamps AFTER the sorting to avoid the timestamp map.

Comparing this to my version in 3bf4b17#diff-c4ab017fbcdb5a144736e99798034dc43f3015c460d8a689d783e80e8d2ea2b0, which was mostly Claude to be fair (which is why I hadn't opened a PR yet), do we need this separate step for indexing the first series' (base) timestamp before all of the others? Wouldn't it be sufficient to just start directly with the loop below and including that first series in there? It would still make sense to keep the if len(indices) == 1 special case of course.
Add fast path that returns early when no duplicate labelsets exist, avoiding allocations in the common case. For the merge case, simplify collision detection by checking for duplicate timestamps after sorting instead of building a timestamp map, reducing memory overhead. Nice, thanks 👍 I could think of ways to potentially optimize it even further, but it's probably not necessary for an edge case of an edge case :)

What do you have in mind? I was thinking doing the check while sorting but not sure it would be 100% accurate. And I wanted to avoid changing indices[0] in place. |

Yeah, that would be one way that came to my mind as well. Alternatively, since the timestamps in the original matrices are sorted, you could also "zip" both the base and the other matrix together, advancing appropriately with two separate timestamp indices. So like a standard algorithm for merging already sorted lists, but with an error when the same timestamps are encountered at any given point. |
