README

version 0.1.3
Last updated October 2023

This page is a personal README that aims to provide a window into what I care about as well as how I prefer or tend to think and operate (primarily in a professional context). This also helps keep me self-aware and practice intentional vulnerability as I grow.

A. GUIDING PRINCIPLES

I. Engineering Philosophy
a. I believe there are three groups of experiences to build and design for in software development: users, customers, and developer teams.
b. I believe high quality software is well-instrumented, well-documented, extensible, and built and maintained using processes crafted with operational excellence in mind.

II. Interpersonal Philosophy
a. Different people have different ways of learning, processing information, communicating, motivating themselves, contributing, and influencing. It is important to me to understand and honor others’ preferences and I hope for the same in return.
b. Mutual respect, together with accountability, empathy, and integrity, are valuable in establishing a supportive environment for growth.

III. Boundaries
a. My Christian faith is an important part of my identity and lifestyle. I will be AFK Friday evenings to Saturday evenings to observe the Sabbath.
b. I strive to respect others’ weekends, time off, and non-work hours, and I hope for the same in return. I seek to hand off appropriately before taking breaks.
c. I aim to minimize context switching and try to balance my energy, attention, and time. This can look like allocating focus time during the day for heavier tasks/thinking, taking a 30 minute break in the middle of the day to clear my mind, or dedicating an afternoon to code reviewing and updating documentation.

C. INTEGRATIONS

I. Collaboration
a. I value clear communication and respectful use of meeting times/direct messaging and mentions. I prefer asynchronous communication for conversations that are quick or don’t require heavy discussion that could benefit from a larger group discussion.
b. I am a big fan of documentation being a primary resource as opposed to any one individual being a primary resource. It is easy for information to get lost if there is no written record. I think documentation and written communication is increasingly important as teams scale or adopt hybrid, remote, and distributed workplace models.

II. Team dynamics
a. I seek to raise questions, concerns, and ideas in an informed manner and encourage teammates to do the same so as to cultivate responsibility and allow for efficient use of time.
b. I value specific feedback and appreciation.
c. I think defining clean interfaces between teams is just as important as defining clean interfaces between system components.

D. LIMITATIONS

I. Incompatibilities
a. Inconsistent or unrealistic expectations
b. Disrespectful comments, jokes, or behavior

II. Vulnerabilities
a. Having many back-to-back meetings drains me quickly, and I try to allow time post-meetings to process the discussion and organize my thoughts.
b. I may be hesitant to dive deep quickly and prefer to seek breadth before depth, especially when working on something unfamiliar to me.
c. I can get distracted easily if I am not clear on a focus or goal or I am too occupied with details, but I try to combat this by reminding myself of the bigger picture and seeking support from others.
