Fukushima USA? Dangerous radioactive leaks and cracked foundations go unpunished at American nuclear power plants

Safety has taken a back seat to cost-cutting at most of the nation’s nuclear power plants, sparking fears that America could be facing its own Fukushima disaster.

An investigation by the Associated Press has revealed federal regulators are repeatedly weakening – or simply failing to impose – strict rules.
Officials at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission have frequently decided that original regulations were too strict, arguing that safety margins could be eased without peril.. . . . .

About spent nuclear fuel storage :

U.S. official says Yucca nuclear dump not an option

(Reuters) – A controversial Nevada site is not an option for storing toxic waste from nuclear power plants, a senior U.S. official said, dismissing Republican efforts to revive the Bush-era plan.

“We do not see Yucca Mountain as a solution here,” U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman said on the sidelines of a major international meeting to strengthen global nuclear safety after Japan’s Fukushima atomic crisis.

“It is time to turn the page and try to find a better set of solutions,” he told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

The world has struggled with what to do about nuclear waste for decades, but Japan’s nuclear disaster three months ago brought fresh attention to the dilemma as much of the waste is now stored in pools next to reactors. . . .

NOTE: Nebraska nuke plants have plenty of spent fuel rods on site that need constant cooling. It is misleading when the energy co. says the plant is ‘shut down’ etc. – as if it is safe from flood waters.

Sandia Labs: Similarities between Fukushima Dai-Ichi and reactors like Nebraska’s Cooper nuke plant pose significant problem — Loss of electricity could cause meltdown

More than 80% of the Japanese people distrust anything their government says about Fukushima.

TVA’s nuclear expansion plans carry great safety risk, costs

Japan has three reactors at Fukushima in a state of meltdown, pouring radiation into the air and ocean.Fort Calhoun, a nuclear power plant in Nebraska, was flooded by the Missouri River earlier this month and has experienced loss of power for the cooling of fuel rods. Three reactors at Browns Ferry narrowly missed an F5 tornado and lost outside sources of power for weeks.

You would think that these warnings would be enough for sane people to back off from production of new nuclear reactors. But what is TVA doing? Completing one new reactor at Watts Bar; getting ready to launch a $7 billion plan to build new reactors at Bellefonte and to take an old reactor there out of mothballs and spruce it up to go; contracting with Babcock & Wilcox to purchase four new mini-reactors for East Tennessee.

Project Flood nuclear ‘alert’: Obama, Red Cross declare emergencies

Project Flood 2011 and tornados meet two nuclear stations

Two United States nuclear power plants are on alert and President Obama has declared emergencies in Nebraska’s counties where the two nuclear stations are both experiencing “unusual events.” The official emergency declarations apply to both counties where the nuclear facilities are threatened with flood waters. Red Cross closed its emergency shelter at Fort Calhoun, home of one of the nuclear facilities, and is now referring and transitioning evacuees to other shelters. Red Cross is due to assess Fort Calhoun when conditions permit. . . .  (more)

Japanese nuclear plant halts operation to clean contaminated water because of a rapid rise in radiation

Officials at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant suspended an operation to clean contaminated water hours after it had begun because of a rapid rise in radiation.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), which operates the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, is investigating the cause and could not say when the clean-up will resume, company spokesman [lying sack-of-sh*t] Junichi Matsumoto said.

Fresh water is being pumped in to cool damaged reactor cores, and is becoming contaminated in the process. Around 105,000 tonnes of highly radioactive water have pooled across the plant, and could overflow within a couple of weeks if action is not taken.

In earlier tests, the water treatment system reduced caesium levels in the water to about one ten-thousandth of their original levels. The system began full operations on Friday after a series of problems involving leaks and valve flaws.

The system was suspended in early Saturday when workers detected a sharp radiation increase in the system’s caesium-absorbing component, Matsumoto said. Radioactivity in one of 24 cartridges, which was expected to last for a few weeks, had already reached its limit within five hours, he said. . .  (more)

Elevated radiation levels widespread in eastern Japan

Unsafe levels of radioactive contamination have been reported from multiple sources throughout vast areas of eastern Japan in locations far away from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Science Magazine cites data from the prefectural government of Iwate revealing radioactive cesium has traveled over 100 miles away from Fukushima. Pastoral grasses are contaminated beyond safety standards
Japanese scientists have begun to track background radiation levels independently, according to the magazine’s report. Levels are exceeding acceptable safety limits in many locations.

US teetering nuke plants – Update

19 05 2011

We’re watching some flood affected nuke plants in the US and some that had other problems.

On the WATERFORD nuke plant

This article from May 13 on the Morganza Spillway says:

Some officials said Thursday that spillover effects resulting from the flood could threaten other industries. That includes the possibility that the Waterford 3 nuclear power plant in Taft, Louisiana, could be closed, according to CNN affiliate WGNO.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest at 26.6 feet in Taft on May 23. If it reaches 27 feet, officials told WGNO, the plant’s water intake system could shut down. . .

And on BROWNS FERRY nuke plant –

TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant reactor’s cooling system stalls

The Tennessee Valley Authority, which has touted the safety of its nuclear reactors amid a continuing crisis in Japan, suffered a cooling system shutdown for 40 minutes Thursday after electricity shorted out at a Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant reactor. . .

On FORT CALHOUN nuke plant (in Nebraska) –

Nuke plant may face 2nd violation

The nuclear power plant near Omaha has been notified by federal regulators that it may face consequences for a second significant safety violation.

As a result, Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station risks being placed under the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s most intense level of oversight for operating reactors. . .

US Nuke Plant Update – No Warning Sirens Working at Brown’s Ferry

10 05 2011

ALABAMA –

Nuclear sirens conk out in storm

TVA safely shut down its Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Alabama with emergency backup power this week, but power outages across the Tennessee Valley still left the utility without enough emergency sirens to warn nearby residents of potential safety problems at both Browns Ferry in Alabama and the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant near Soddy-Daisy.

In a notice to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission released Friday, TVA said more than 60 percent of its sirens around Browns Ferry and about a third of its warning sirens around Sequoyah were inoperable this week when electricity service was lost to the sirens following Wednesday’s tornadoes and wind storms.

With so many sirens not working, TVA has had to be prepare plans to use police vehicles with loud- speakers to notify residents living within 10 miles of the plant should a nuclear accident occur. . . (more)

Ala. nuclear plant cited for safety
ATLANTA (AP) – Federal regulators ordered in-depth inspections Tuesday at a nuclear power plant run by the Tennessee Valley Authority in northern Alabama after deciding the failure of an emergency cooling system there could have been a serious safety problem.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a rare red finding against the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant near Athens, Ala., after it investigated how a valve on a residual heat removal system became stuck shut. Safety regulators said only five red findings – the most severe ranking the agency gives to problems uncovered in its inspections – have been issued nationwide in the past decade. . . .

US N-plants not ready for long blackouts

On Thursday, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) chairman Gregory Jaczko cast doubt on whether four to eight hours, as required by NRC to manage without power, is enough time, AP reported.

“Four hours doesn’t seem to be a reasonable time to restore offsite power if you lost the diesels immediately,” Jaczko said.

“In the event there is a station blackout that is externally driven, I’m not convinced that in that situation four hours is enough time to restore offsite power,” he added.

Of the 104 nuclear reactors in the US 87 can cope for four hours in a blackout, 14 can cope for eight hours, while three can last for 16 hours.
