Terrific Ground Water Pollution in SC Made Worse by 2018 Hurricanes – Entire Southeast Probably the Same

27 10 2018

In looking at flooding conditions and nuke plants threatened by hurricanes Florence and Michael we came across this 2004 Westinghouse SC nuke plant document on the environment around the plant.

[CLICK  IMAGE FOR FULL SIZE]

The amount of contamination all around from fecal waste, zinc and other toxic chemicals and pesticides from farms is shown in the 14 year old survey. Those problems are probably much worse before the storms hit. The report was filed with the NRC  in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

With this amount of industrial and farm waste how could South Carolina, or the affected southeast states handle massive new contamination from flooded refineries, chemical plants, nuke “processing facilities”, hog farms (some of the biggest factory farms in the country) untreated sewage, poultry farms and pesticide stockpiles?

Imagine the health effects waiting down the road for the inhabitants who are drinking this stuff and who waded through it and let their children play in it.

A look at the environmental report shows they had studied hurricane risk and storm flooding and the state and federal government took no action. Had this report been read by just about anybody they could see the contamination situation would be unimaginable if there was widespread flooding from deluge storms or hurricanes.

  Manuregeddon!
Almost 9 MILLION hogs in NC in the path of mega-hurricane!

Columbia Fuel Operations gets a lengthy letter after uranium mess was minimized (lied about) and poor interim V.P. had to endure reading it.

Contaminated water rises by 3,000 tons in a week at Fukushima plant

28 07 2011

Amount of contaminated water rises by 3,000 tons in a week at Fukushima plant — Not going as planned

The amount of contaminated water hasn’t decreased as planned. With the rain from the typhoons and fresh water from the dam to supplement the treated water when the water treatment system was down, the total amount of contaminated water increased by 3,000 tonnes to 120,650 tonnes. The Central Waste Treatment Facility where the contaminated water is being stored is also reaching the capacity. . . .

Nuclear Stress Tests Have Japan’s Energy Sector Bewildered

In a surprise move, the Japanese government announced last Wednesday it would conduct safety assessments–dubbed stress tests–on all of the country’s nuclear reactors. The unexpected decision caused widespread confusion, and even consternation among some cabinet members, given that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) had been reassuring certain prefectural and local governments that it was safe to restart their nuclear reactors.

The situation was hardly improved when on Monday the government announced that the safety assessment would use new standards and be carried out in two stages involving two entities, METI’s Nuclear and Industry Safety Commission (NISA) and the independent Nuclear Safety Commission. . . (more)

Japanese Citizens Take Radiation Protection into Their Own Hands

8 07 2011

. . .  “The nuclear industry, particularly in the United States, and elsewhere—Russia and Japan—has had a very long history of withholding information and misleading the public about the hazards of their activities.” Being no exception to Alvarez’s generalization, the Japanese government, since the mutiple meltdowns and explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in mid-March, has withheld or controlled information about health risks of radiation, expected dispersion of radioactive materials,1 and their actual contamination measurements in areas surrounding Fukushima Daiichi.2 Instead of providing candid information to the public, the government started campaigns in the opposite direction—to lull the public into worrying less about radiation and its health risks. . . .

Levee Intentionally Blown Up Along Missouri River
Authorities Investigate Detonation

LOVELAND, Iowa — Authorities are investigating an intentional breach in a levee near Desoto Bend.

Pottawattamie County officials said a half-mile stretch of the Vanmann #30 levee was mechanically excavated and then lowered by using explosives. The private levee is just north of the Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge, northwest of Honey Creek.

So far, emergency management officials said they’ve seen no damage as a result of the levee breach, but they have fielded plenty of phone calls about it.

Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Theulen said he was alerted Friday morning that the levee may have been in the process of being intentionally breached. About 20 minutes later, officials said they received calls from people wanting to know why levees were being blown up. One caller claimed to have witnessed the explosion. . .  (more)

Unstated PROBLEMS at Fort Calhoun Nuke Plant

29 06 2011

From EX-SKF:

Fort Calhoun Nuke Plant: Borated Water in Reactor, Spent Fuel Pool, Normal Procedure, Says Plant CEO

Bits and pieces about the Fort Calhoun Nuke Plant in Nebraska:

They are using boric acid in the reactor and the spent fuel pool (CNN);

The “waterproof” turns out to be “aqua dams” and levees in front of the buildings that house key systems (CNN);

Spent fuel dry casks are outside the flood protected area “because they are sealed and bolted down” (Iowa Independent);

2/3 of the active fuel rods are still inside the reactor

Nuke Industry Cranks Up PR Machine to Damage Control Mode Over Nebraska Flooded Plants

25 06 2011

After trying to get by with lies since the Missouri River began to encroach on 2 Nebraska nuke plants they counter today with a disinfo counter offensive.

Since water creeped up and air & water & land was quickly closed off the Omaha utility has dismissed reports telling the truth about major flooding at the sites as “rumors”. All critical reports or hints of catatrophe at the plants get barred from tv news, banned from regional and national media and burried or removed from Google searches.

Now the freeloading, cancer-causing, dangerous nuke industry tries a new spin. They release a barrage of “news stories” (written by their PR team) like this:

Floods spur wild rumors of nuclear plant perils in Nebraska

They forget to mention the head of the NRC is showing up Monday and it isn’t to do ‘rumor control’.

They forget to mention the Omaha Public Power District resisted tooth and nail even procuring the flimsy flood defences they have on hand now.

They forget to mention the Army Corps. of Engineers will not vouch for the integrity of dams, berms and sandbag walls under the strain of snow melt about to come Nebraska’s way.

They forget to talk about the stamina of back up generators when roads coal supplying rail lines are cut off and power lines begin to sag.

The commercial press so far has only been parroting the utility’s press releases. They don’t address photo proof of massive flooding at Fort Calhoun and the half submerged spent fuel rods storage building. They don’t even acknowledge the rods were moved.

The EPA has abdicated any responsibilities for measuring radiation releases in the US.

 Who do you believe? – – – The PR team that says ” …. contrary to rumors about the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, absolutely no critical facilities are submerged. ” or your eyes?
