Some items we notice are also noticed by others in American continent’s NW and Hawaiians following news about radiation in the air and ocean coming from Japan.
ITEM: Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer sent a letter Wednesday to the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission saying his Oregon constituents were concerned about possible radiation, and asking for clarification of the NRC’s plans for measuring potential radiation and communicating that information to the public.
ITEM: SPOKANE — The fear of radiation heading to the Inland Northwest from Japan is creating a rush at military surplus stores. People are buying up potassium iodide and radiation detectors, known as Geiger counters
ITEM: Recently it’s been the nuclear crisis following Japan’s earthquake that has gas mask sales a popular item again. The store says it’s been taking orders from around the country. From customers who are worried radiation from an unstable plant in Fukushiman Daiichi will reach parts of the U.S.
Shipping clerk Devin Ladd says “it’s been shipped everywhere. We do ship all over though majority is West Coast: California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona New Mexico. All of that area has been mostly the key stuff. It’s been shipped everywhere.”
ITEM: Americans fearing possible exposure to radiation from the Japanese nuclear crisis are clearing out suppliers of potassium iodide, which helps protect the thyroid gland from radioactive particles, according to USA TODAY reporters. Residents along the West Coast and in Alaska and Hawaii appear most concerned.
ITEM: A newly released laboratory analysis of milk samples taken in Hilo, Hawaii, shows traces of radioactive fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Samples of milk from across the United States are regularly collected and tested by the EPA’s RadNet a national network of monitoring stations that check air, water, and milk samples for radioactivity.
Cesium 134 (24 picoCuries per liter) and 137 (19 picoCuries per liter), and Iodine 131 (18 picoCuries per liter) were detected and identified in local milk samples taken on April 4, 2011. All are radioactive products that have been emitted by the ongoing Fukushima nuclear meltdown in Japan.
There’re are many more in local newspapers and radio station websites. It dominates comments after articles denying radiation severity.
The corporate media plan of poo-pooing radiation fears not only fails but it validates the fears. Any government agency in Canada or the US that thinks people will not evacuate themselves (before waiting for orders) when radiation drift from Japan becomes more and more apparent are deluding themselves. They had better get a grip on the global disaster and stop acting like TEPCO executives.
