A record 1.8 million becquerels of beta-ray sources per liter of water were detected at a monitoring well at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Dec. 13.
The reading concerns strontium and other beta-ray sources.
The water was sampled at a monitoring well in an area close to the sea near the No. 2 reactor building on Dec. 12. The well is located close to trenches holding highly radioactive water.
TEPCO said the reading apparently spiked after highly radioactive water seeped into the surroundings through failed parts of the trenches.

Sharp drop in water at Fukushima Reactors No. 1-3 — “Below level regarded as necessary to keep fuel inside cool”
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant said Thursday that the amount of water injected into the crippled Nos. 1 to 3 reactors temporarily dropped below the level regarded as necessary to keep the fuel inside cool.
Although the sharp drop in the water volume did not last long enough to push up the temperature of the reactor pressure vessels, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it will investigate the cause of the incident because water injection is the “most important” system to ensure the stable condition of the reactors. . . TEPCO put a camera on scope to check out unit 2 (with almost no cooling water). The radiation is way to high (10x lethal rate) for human activity near the wrecked reactor remains. The fuel is in China Syndrome mode and there doesn’t seem to be a quick response to cool it. There IS a quick response to cool the press.
The Telegraph reports: “The other two reactors that had meltdowns could be in even worse shape. The No. 2 reactor is the only one officials have been able to closely examine so far.”
They also say the other reactors might not be able to be examined because there’s no place to insert the scope(!!) –
“Three Daiichi reactors had meltdowns, but the No. 2 reactor is the only one that has been examined because radiation levels inside the reactor building are relatively low and its container is designed with a convenient slot to send in the endoscope.”
