War Propaganda
Back in 2003 during the Iraq invasion, most media sources were against the war, mostly out of anti-Bush hatred. Fox News was the most balanced, although obviously a little right-leaning. Hannity had a show at the time, but it was called Hannity & Colmes. Colmes was an unapologetic leftist, so having the two of them co-host fit into the network’s model of “fair and balanced.” Out of curiosity, I tuned in a little at the time to the Qatar network Al Jazeera. OMG, it was a nonstop barrage of anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli propaganda. It went way beyond bias to treating any Arab or Muslim statement as undisputed fact. Some of you may remember Iraqi Foreign Minister, Muhammad Al-Sahhaf, nicknamed “Baghdad Bob.” Every one of his press conferences was like an SNL skit, making the most obviously false statements, such as ones where Iraq was easily repelling U.S. forces even as American tanks rolled into Baghdad. Al Jazeera treated his word as gospel for most of the invasion, then moved onto to other unreliable sources after the U.S. took over. Consequently, I learned that nothing from the network could be trusted. If they had brought on some alternative voices or even cast a little doubt in their stories, future reports may have had at least some creditbility.
I don’t watch the “news” nowadays except to look for meme ideas and see how they’re covering stories. I must say the way Fox News is covering the Iran attacks is absolutely sickening. Every time I’ve tuned in it’s been one-sided, nonstop cheerleading for the war. It is very much like the coverage I saw from Al Jazeera in 2003, except Fox’s coverage is the opposite: all pro-Israel and anti-Iran. No statements about the war from Netanyahu or the Trump admin ever seem to be challenged, at least not during any of the times I’ve tuned in. You would think maybe for a war in which only 21 percent of Americans support, you might bring on a few voices to argue why this Iran War might not be a great idea. For example, thousands of civilians will likely die, we’re nearly $40 trillion in debt, gas prices could skyrocket, Iran may launch retaliatory terrorist attacks, another ISIS-type group could take power, and yes, American soldiers are getting killed.
This does NOT mean I’m pro-Iran or antisemite. 🙄 I don’t favor either side, just as I didn’t in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. With constant war propaganda from both sides, it’s impossible to know what to believe. Both Iran and Israel have shown repeatedly they can’t be trusted. Both have a history of not only lies & exaggeration, but false flag attacks. Trump supporters were rightly skeptical on all the wars Biden was supporting, but way too many have suddenly jumped on board the pro-war bandwagon in Iran, spurred on by Fox’s nonstop war cheerleading, plus Trump’s 180-degree reversal from war skeptic to Regime Changer-in-Chief.
Who knows what will happen as things unfold in Iran? Unfortunately, 25 years of experience in Iraq and Afghanistan tell us the costs will likely far outweigh the benefits. So, maybe put away the pom-poms.
