Magicโ€™s newest expansion, Edge of Eternities, brings with it a whole host of space and sci-fi themed spells, lands, and mechanics to go with them. Today we take a closer look at void, an ability that represents the deep emptiness of space, where no one can hear you scream and your permanents have left the battlefield.

Void triggers as battlefields get emptier, or whenever a spell is warped away at lightspeed. Just how does void work? And with which previous mechanics does it share some similarities? Read on and become a master of the newest MTG mechanic!

How Does Void Work?

Void is an ability that improves a cardโ€™s effect if a nonland permanent left the battlefield this turn or a spell was warped this turn. On instants and sorceries, void may replace the original effect with an โ€œinsteadโ€ clause. On permanents, void may add new triggers or change effects already present. It doesnโ€™t matter who controlled the nonland permanent or cast the warped spell โ€“ any playerโ€™s permanents and spells trigger any playerโ€™s void effects.

The History of Void in MTG

Void was added in the Edge of Eternities expansion in July 2025. Void is reminiscent of an older mechanic, revolt, which was released in Aether Revolt, released in 2017. Revolt is enabled if a permanent you control left the battlefield, while void turns on whenever anyoneโ€™s permanent leaves the battlefield (or a spell is warped).

Is Void a Triggered Ability?

Void can be a part of a triggered ability, but isnโ€™t always a triggered effect. For example, Tragic Trajectory has void, but the void effect replaces the cardโ€™s effect. This is in contrast to Insatiable Skittermaw, which has a triggered ability that happens at the beginning of your end step.

Do Tokens Count for Void?

Yes! Nonland token permanents that leave the battlefield count for void effects. Treasure, Food, Clues, even Eldrazi Spawn tokens count for void.

Do Fetch Lands Trigger Void?

Windswept Heath

No, fetch lands like Windswept Heath donโ€™t enable void. Void only cares about when a nonland permanent leaves the battlefield. Fetch lands are land permanents by their very nature.

Does the Void Card Have to Be in Play to Trigger?

Insatiable Skittermaw

No. If a permanent leaves the battlefield during your first main phase and you cast Insatiable Skittermaw during your second main phase, the Skittermawโ€™s void ability still triggers at the beginning of your end step. The void card doesnโ€™t need to โ€œseeโ€ the permanent leave the battlefield or โ€œseeโ€ the spell be warped.

Do Your Opponentโ€™s Permanents Count for Void?

Yes. As opposed to revolt, void cards turn on whenever any nonland permanent leaves the battlefield, not just one of your own.

Does Your Opponent Warping Turn on Void?

Yes. Void cards turn on whenever anyone warps a spell. However, all void cards released so far are creatures and sorceries, so most wonโ€™t do anything unless you manage to flash them in during your opponentsโ€™ turns.

Void vs. Revolt

Void is very similar to a previous mechanic from 2017โ€™s Aether Revolt set known as revolt. Revolt also either added or changed card effects based on if a permanent left the battlefield this turn. The main difference, besides lack of any mention of warp, is that revolt requires that you control the permanent that left the battlefield, and works with lands.

Best Void Cards

Alpharael, Stonechosen

Alpharael, Stonechosen

Alpharael, Stonechosen has all the makings of a mythic creature in todayโ€™s Standard meta between an obnoxious ward effect to keep it safe and a threateningly strong life loss attack trigger thatโ€™s easy enough to enable. At 5 mana, Alpharael is a little weak for only having a 3/3 body, but it makes up for that because you arenโ€™t attacking with Alpharael to actually deal damage with its power. Instead, you can take the easiest possible route to trigger void each turn with something as easy as blinking your opponentโ€™s blocking creature with Getaway Glamer.

Chorale of the Void

Chorale of the Void

A repeatable Zombify effect with the caveat that something must leave the battlefield each turn to keep it up is a fun minigame to play with Chorale of the Void. This aura has the potential to get you some great creatures depending on what your opponent is running, or at the very least keep the pressure on them to block your attackers.

Elegy Acolyte

Elegy Acolyte

Elegy Acolyte draws you cards Phyrexian Arena-style whenever one or more creatures you control deal damage to an opponent. In addition, if you can enable void before the end step, Elegy Acolyte pumps out a 2/2 robot creature token for you, which helps you to go wide enough to sneak attackers past your opponentโ€™s battlefield. It also comes with lifelink, which helps you mitigate the pings you take from drawing those cards. For 4 mana, Elegy Acolyte is the best value weโ€™ve seen on a void card thus far.

Wrap Up

Within the pitch-black darkness of the Blind Eternities, spells and creatures still manage to do battle. The void mechanic takes the flavor of engagements in deep space and brings it down to the tabletop for you to enjoy at your local prerelease. The best part about void is itโ€™s easy to activate โ€“ if revoltโ€™s persistence in multiple formatsโ€™ metas is anything to go off of, I expect weโ€™ll see void cards float around for years to come, especially with the added benefit of triggering void via warping cards.

How do you like the void mechanic? Does it fit into its own unique sphere within the game, or should WotC just have re-flavored revolt for this set? Will any of these void cards stand the test of time? And which sort of Commander decks could you build around void? Let me know in the comments, or over on Draftsimโ€™s Discord!

Thanks for reading! Weโ€™ll see you out there in the Eternities!
