Calling occupants of interplanetary, most extraordinary craft. Edge of Eternities takes Magic to space, and with it comes a whole fleet of spacecraft. As you might expect from ships designed to cross the interstellar medium, they take a while to get going, but once they doโฆ okay, they donโt all quite reach hyperspace, but some do!
So which of Magic's spacecraft should we consider our space Cadillacs, and which are, to quote Luke Skywalkerโs first impression of the Millenium Falcon, โa piece of junkโ? Letโs get down to brass, er, titanium tacks.
What Are Spacecraft in MTG?

Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought | Illustration by Jaime Jones
Spacecraft are an artifact type introduced in Edge of Eternities and Edge of Eternities Commander. Spacecraft have station abilities that allow you to tap creatures to add charge counters to them. Once you reach a certain threshold of charge counters, most spacecraft become artifact creatures that gain flying, and some gain additional abilities. Fully animated spacecraft are vulnerable to both artifact and creature removal, and all spacecraft are reset by blink abilities.
#26. Rescue Skiff
I dunno man, 6 mana for reanimation seems like a lot, even if you blink your Rescue Skiff to grab more stuff out of your graveyard.
#25. Susurian Dirgecraft
Phil Collins voice: Su-su-surian
Thatโs all I got on Susurian Dirgecraft. If I wanted an edict that hits everyone but me, Iโd spring for Sheoldred's Edict. Decent value in EOE Limited, but Iโm skeptical elsewhere.
#24. Wurmwall Sweeper
Wurmwall Sweeper helps you to fill your graveyard and filter the top of your deck, which can be pretty useful from a colorless 2-drop artifact. You can use it to add to the number of 2-power creatures you have for Arabella, Abandoned Doll, but you sadly wonโt double its enters ability with Delney, Streetwise Lookout.
#23. Wedgelight Rammer
I donโt want to underestimate a card that can get you 5/6 worth of stats spread across two bodies, and itโs neat that you can tap your Robot token to start to station your Wedgelight Rammer immediately. It would just suck to cast this on turn 4 only for my opponent to cast an overloaded Vandalblast on turn 5.
#22. Uthros Scanship
A 4-mana Catalog that eventually becomes a body doesnโt particularly excite me since cards like Chart a Course can give you similar value. Master of Winds is the most direct comparison to Uthros Scanship, and it isnโt really played much either.
#21. Pinnacle Kill-Ship
Iโd only run Pinnacle Kill-Ship if I already had colorless or artifact cost reducers, or if I had a deck that cared about excess damage. Or maybe a meme 7-matters deck built around some Final Fantasy cards.
#20. Fell Gravship
Thereโre homes for Fell Gravship in decks that want to stock up the graveyard, and youโll probably want this in a typal spacecraft build. It gets a few bonus points as a 3-drop that interacts with your other spacecraft.
#19. Galvanizing Sawship
Galvanizing Sawship should be a good body in EOE Limited, but it makes me wish we could station our spacecraft at instant speed. I just want another way to leverage those Spirit tokens from endure.
#18. The Eternity Elevator
Soโฆ. Legendary spacecraft can be your commander, but The Eternity Elevator isn't one of them. This is a more expensive Thran Dynamo until you get it to 20+ charge counters.
Itโs a legendary mana rock that fits into proliferate decks, and you could make a case for it in Voltron or big power decks. A fully stationed Eternity Elevator taps for 20+ mana of a single color, which makes for an explosive turn, so this is not for many decks.
#17. Sledge-Class Seedship
Anything that lets you cheat creatures into play is worth a look. My issue with Sledge-Class Seedship is that it doesnโt have an enters ability, so youโd better have big creatures to station it quickly if you want to get some value out of it. Otherwise, this spacecraft is removal bait.
#16. Atmospheric Greenhouse
Atmospheric Greenhouse wants you to cast it once youโve already developed a board, and it provides an enters trigger that gives a +1/+1 counter to every creature you control. If you just want that ability, Basri's Solidarity costs a lot less mana, and you can find more repeatable effects like some Ajani planeswalkers. +1/+1 counters and token decks could make use of this spacecraft, but it doesnโt wow me.
#15. Infinite Guideline Station
Weโve got another 5-color good stuff commander! Infinite Guideline Station is a pick if you want to play every spacecraft in EOE and EOC, but there arenโt many multicolor ones to make that enters trigger or that attack trigger matter. Iโm not convinced that this will usurp a Jodah card or Aragorn, the Uniter as a multicolor-matters commander.
#14. Debris Field Crusher
Lightning Bolt as an enters ability is definitely a red ability. Debris Field Crusher also comes with a firebreathing activated ability so that it can pack a punch thatโs stronger than a love tap.
#13. Specimen Freighter
Specimen Freighter gives you two different pieces of value, though one is more immediately useful than the other. It bounces on entry, so you can reuse other enters abilities yourself or get rid of an opponentโs threat. At least temporarily, unless youโre also playing around with wheels.
The milling attack trigger is what gets me going. You just need to tap The Mindskinner once to fully station this spacecraft, and it pairs nicely with that nightmare to add to your offensive milling power. The mana value is a little high for its impact considering that Fleet Swallower just costs 1 more, but it could be a decent budget option.
#12. The Seriema
The Seriema gives you something to consider in a legends-matter build, since it starts as a 3-mana tutor and tops out as a mass indestructible enablerโฆ at least when your legends are tapped. You can start getting silly if you blink this spacecraft repeatedly to pull all of your legendary creatures out of your deck. My instincts are to blink The Seriema a bunch to fill my hand, then cast Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant to play all my legends at once. Or if Iโm feeling more fair, Iโll attack with Sledge-Class Seedship.
#11. Synthesizer Labship
The top end of Synthesizer Labshipโs potential is a 1-mana 4/4 with flying and vigilance, but you only need two charge counters for its first ability. I like that it doesnโt specify โnoncreature artifactโ, so you can use it to give flying and a temporary stat buff to your Plague Myr or whatever.
#10. Larval Scoutlander
Lander tokens have been called Rampant Growths, and Larval Scoutlander lets you trade in a Lander for more value than usual when it enters. It costs as much as Cultivate and gets two lands directly onto your battlefield, so thatโs neat. It can even replace that sorcery if youโre already running the Modern Horizons 3 Landscapes, fetch lands, or other lands that youโre going to sacrifice anyway.
#9. Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought
Now hereโs a spacecraft that wants all your damage redirection creatures, like Stuffy Doll and Brash Taunter. I donโt know how often youโll be able to get 10+ charge counters onto Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought, but to me, itโs a little like Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant. Youโve just gotta try it for the epic story you could get out of it. If itโs your commander, a fully stationed Dawnsire just needs a Chief of the Foundry attack for lethal commander damage.
#8. Extinguisher Battleship
With no colored pips, there are decks thatโll be able to cast Extinguisher Battleship for free, or next to it. And thatโs before we consider that Tannuk, Steadfast Second gives your artifacts warp and Sami, Wildcat Captain gives all your spells affinity for artifacts. A 10/10 flampler is nothing to sneeze at, either.
#7. Warmaker Gunship
You can blow up all kinds of problems when your Warmaker Gunship enters, depending on how many artifacts you control. Yet another in a long line of cards that make some of us wonder whether Treasure was a mistake. It could be a decent 3-drop in an artifact pod deck like Iron Man, Titan of Innovation, or any deck that could sac and reanimate it for continuous value. I donโt even care about the ability to station it in those decks unless Iโm on the ropes and I really need a flier.
#6. Uthros Research Craft
Uthros Research Craft and Uthros, Titanic Godcore have artifact synergies up the wazoo. Both benefit from artifact tokens like Thopters and Clues, though this spacecraft wants you to cast artifacts to get the card draw. A dedicated artifact deck can use this as a finisher, since its power grows in relation to the number of artifacts you control.
#5. Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
I could see Inspirit, Flagship Vessel both as a commander and as a support piece for other decks. Iโm specifically thinking of Liberty Prime, Recharged, since you can proliferate both energy counters and the charge counters on Inspirit, and a fully stationed spacecraft would also protect Liberty Prime and other artifacts you have.
#4. Lumen-Class Frigate
Your primary use case for a Lumen-Class Frigate is as an anthem in creature-based decks, and itโs one that I think actually fits in nicely with vehicle decks that use Pilot or other tokens to crew some heavy beaters. I might never even fully station this one honestly, since Iโd just make my anthem vulnerable to creature removal. But hey, the option is there if you need that 3/5 flying lifelinker.
#3. Entropic Battlecruiser
Tinybones and Tergrid decks can join the Space Age thanks to Entropic Battlecruiser. It doesnโt take much to get the life drain online, and an animated Battlecruiser helps to keep it more consistent with its attack trigger. Its 3/10 stats combined with deathtouch make it tough to n profitably or to attack into.
#2. Exploration Broodship
The obvious comparison here is Exploration, since Exploration Broodship costs the same amount of mana for that extra land text. The set of abilities you get when you animate it helps you to bring threats and utility permanents back from your graveyard, but it also makes your Broodship easier to remove as an artifact creature.
#1. Hearthhull, the Worldseed
I donโt have a Jund () deck in my Commander collection yet, but Hearthhull, the Worldseed is tempting me to buy the World Shaper precon. Lands-matter has a lot of support across Magic, and a commander that pays you off for sacrificing your lands just sounds like a lot of fun. Youโre in the right colors for abilities that let you bring lands back from your graveyard.
Best Spacecraft Payoffs
Edge of Eternities ships with a few specific payoffs for spacecraft, whether itโs cards that interact with them directly or cards that let you spread around charge counters. Some of the best among them include Loading Zone, Coretapper, Moxite Refinery, and Drill Too Deep, but you can find other synergistic cards that you can play instead of some overplayed staples.
Apart from the explicit payoffs, spacecraft can take advantage of more generic artifact payoffs. You can start with cost reducers like Foundry Inspector and lords like Chief of the Foundry. Digsite Engineer can give you Construct tokens that make it easier to fully station your permanents. Thereโs also abilities that trigger when you cast artifacts or when your artifacts enter the battlefield.
Proliferate abilities like Kilo, Apogee Mind and Atraxa, Praetors' Voice allow you to station your permanents more quickly. You can also use more general proliferation cards like Experimental Augury, Tezzeret's Gambit, Drown in Ichor, or Unnatural Restoration as support.
Spacecraft vs. Vehicles
Spacecraft and vehicles are both artifacts that can become creatures. Both require that you tap other creatures to animate them, and crew and station abilities both care about the power of the creatures that you tap for them. You can also tap creatures with summoning sickness to crew vehicles and station spacecraft.
Crew abilities only animate vehicles until the end of that turn. For spacecraft, you add charge counters based on the power of the creatures that you tap, and a spacecraft stays animated as long as it has the required number of charge counters. Another key difference is that you can crew vehicles at instant speed, but you can only station your spacecraft at sorcery speed.
When Does a Spacecraft Become a Creature?
A spacecraft becomes a creature when you reach the highest number you found in the bottom left half of its text box. For example, Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought has a 10+ charge counter ability, and one for 20+ charge counters. Dawnsire isnโt a creature until it has 20 or more charge counters, but it gains the 10+ ability when it has that many charge counters.
Can a Spacecraft Attack Right Away?
It depends. If you play a spacecraft and get the required charge counters onto it during the same turn, it has summoning sickness, so it canโt attack. A few spacecraft have haste themselves, but you can use haste enablers like Rising of the Day, Swiftfoot Boots, etc. for your other spacecraft.
What Happens if You Animate a Spacecraft?
If you animate a spacecraft, it immediately becomes a creature with power and toughness as per its text box. However, the effect that you use to animate it usually includes rules text that will override this. Youโll often see abilities that animate an artifact and give it power and toughness that correlate with its mana value, while other abilities give the artifact a specific power and toughness (most Tezzeret planeswalker cards, for example).
Here's the wrinkle: Spacecraft only gain the abilities in the shaded part of their text box next to their charge counter thresholds if they have enough charge counters. For example, if you animate Infinite Guideline Station with Bello, Bard of the Brambles while it has fewer than 12 charge counters, it wonโt gain flying, and it wonโt gain its attack trigger.
Can Legendary Spacecraft Be Your Commander?
Yes! As part of the introduction of spacecraft into Magic, Wizards has also updated Commander rules to allow legendary vehicles and spacecraft to be your commander. They have to have a printed power and toughness in their text box, though, which means that The Eternity Elevator canโt be your commander.
Can a Spacecraft Station Itself?
No, a spacecraft canโt station itself. The reminder text of every station ability states, โTap another creature you controlโ, so only another creature can station a spacecraft.
What Happens If You Copy a Spacecraft with Charge Counters on It?
The copy enters the battlefield with 0 charge counters as though you had freshly cast it. Youโll still trigger any enters abilities if your spacecraft has any, and youโll trigger abilities that care about when your artifacts enter the battlefield.
Wrap Up

Entropic Battlecruiser | Illustration by Josiah โJo' Cameron
Spacecraft offer a mixed bag of utility and duds, as to be expected from any new subtype thatโs introduced in a new set. Iโve seen some lament the death of the set block format that would allow us to steep in a setting and its mechanics a little longer, and I think Edge of Eternities could have done even more in a two block or three block format. Who knows when weโre going to get spacecraft again? But hey, I think I found yet another archetype to build Alela, Artful Provocateur. Iโm an inch away from asking permission to write an article that compares Alela builds with vehicles, spacecraft, equipment, auras, sagas, and more.
Which spacecraft caught your eye? Will you build around any of the legendary spacecraft in Commander? Which spacecraft will you use in other formats? Let me know in the comments below, or leave a personal log on the Draftsim Discord server.
Until next time, live long and prosper.
