My workplace has restructured (again) so we are meeting our new Big Manager (again) tomorrow, but this does mean that we are having an afternoon tea. I have made banana cupcakes, in little Santa-themed wrappers, and then I will top them with brandy cream tomorrow and stick little Christmas toppers on them, and they will be tasty and festive.

I have also decorated my desk with tinsel, and a little Christmas tree (complete with tiny lights!!) and I am feeling the festive spirit. :D :D :D

29th-Sep-2013 07:30 pm - Hello!
So it has been quite a while since I last posted. First I went away for a month, and then I came back and had to move house. It took a long time and I think I hit an all-new level of stress, but I finally found a lovely new share house. It's delightful!

Anyway I'm not entirely unpacked now but I am well along the way, thankfully.

So what's been happening with you? :)

Chicago is so last year (18938 words) by halfeatenmoon

Additional Tags: Rockford Ice Hogs, Chicago Blackhawks, Long-Distance Relationship, Coming Out, Team Dynamics, Team as Family, NHL Lockout
Summary:

The lockout sucks for everyone, Andrew Shaw included. But he's still playing hockey, at least, and he loves some of the guys he gets to play with at Rockford, and now that he's back in the AHL he gets to see a lot more of his old boyfriend Garrett when their teams play against each other. As far as Andrew's concerned, he could have it a lot worse.

I really loved this! I particularly enjoyed how the relationship exists outside the two people involved in it, and how that played out.

Field hockey season is starting up, so I had pre-season trials on Sunday and then again this evening. Holy hell I am so stiff today! Every movement uses muscles I didn't know I had... and that were woefully underprepared for playing hockey. :/

On the upside I did a very nice tackle in our practice game, which is always a pleasing feeling.

In other hockey news I have been watching the Penguins, who went through a rather wobbly patch where they forgot how powerplays worked but have managed to get better at them and are going pretty well at the moment. That said they have been fighting pretty hard for their last few wins so I hope they are being pretty serious at training. Go go bbs!

And finally, happy birthday to [personal profile] meinnim!

A new coffee shop has opened up in my local shopping centre. It's the kind of place that advertises cold-drip coffee, and when I saw that sign I was in there like a shot because a place that committed to its coffee is likely to be good. And it is! Delicious, tasty coffee that has that bold coffee flavour without the bitterness. <3

Today I also made cookies to take in to work, because that place needs some cheering up like whoa. I got the recipe slightly wrong (added the flour too soon) so they are not as good as they could be, but they'll still be tasty and that's all that's needed.

Characters: Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, T. J. Oshie, Jack Skille, Dustin Byfuglien, Patrick Sharp
Summary: It starts like this:

Well, okay, Patrick has no idea how it actually starts. But as pertains to him (in other words, the important part), it goes a little something like so:

America, being a nation composed in large part of a melting pot of immigrants who may or may not have taken over land already owned by others using less-than-savory means, doesn’t have much of a magical national identity. Much less a magical continental identity. There’s no grand heritage going back thousands of years. Magical families home-schooled all their kids until, like, the 1800’s, and tough for the muggle-born, apparently. Hopefully you got noticed by someone who knew what to do with you before you got burned at the stake. Since you probably can’t control your powers, sport.

It is spring, so I am doing some spring cleaning - a little bit each day, on the basis that it is far too huge to get through in one massive wack. I just cleaned off the floor of my bedroom and vacuumed it. So clean! *_*

In other news, I made waffle batter last night, only to find that my waffle maker had broken. So today I went down to the store and found a waffle maker - Little Chefs Sunny Hunny Waffle Maker, which makes three little heart-shaped waffles. I was a bit sceptical but it actually works quite well, and it's small so storing it will be easier. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has three slots for putting paddle-pop sticks into the waffle (so you have a waffle-pop), but all the waffle steam vents through them, and there's one right under the handle. Poor design choice there.

Anyway, now I have tasty, tasty waffles. (Using this recipe, if you are also so inclined.) Mmm, waffles.

Also I have started watching Teen Wolf, which I am enjoying a lot when it is not focussed on Scott And His Manly Pain.

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Swimming RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ryan Lochte/Michael Phelps
Characters: Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps
Summary: Ryan doesn’t seem as concerned as Michael is about the baby sitting – sleeping, really, on its back with one arm flung up next to its head like it’s about to pump a fist in the air – in the middle of his totally gross, frat-star bedroom covered in a 50/50 split of swimming posters and pictures of disgustingly expensive cars. In fact, he’s looking at the baby with the kind of expression you usually only see on guys’ faces when they’re standing on the podium watching their own flag lifted toward the ceiling of the arena.

“Isn’t he fuckin’ awesome?” Ryan asks, still whispering. “He’s the fucking best, dude, you don’t even know. He’s a ton of work and shit, and, like, he shits a lot, too, but. Dude.”

Relationships: Blaine Anderson/Sebastian Smythe, Blaine Anderson/Kurt Hummel
Characters: Blaine Anderson, Kurt Hummel, Sebastian Smythe
Summary: It’s common knowledge that Blaine Anderson is only the Editor-in-Chief because he went to boarding school with the current CEO. Blaine’s quiet and conservative, and Kurt doesn’t approve of his dress sense – every suit he wears into the office is navy, black or charcoal – but he approves of his Armani-wearing boyfriend even less. An Armani suit is designed to be noticed, it’s attention-grabbing while playing it safe, and Kurt’s never admired anyone who chose the safe option.
Speaking of hurt/comfort, this is a brilliant example of the type.

3rd-Sep-2012 11:45 pm - Winning for everyone!
1. My hockey team made it to the finals of our comp! :D \o/ Super excited as we haven't made finals for years. I painted my nails in the team colours for our game and got a couple of compliments, which is nice.

2. Melbourne Ice won the AIHL season - well done to them. Quite pleased they won.

3. Canberra Knights beat the Mustangs and so avoided the wooden spoon, a victory that we all celebrated as though we had won the Goodall Cup. Go go bbs! Play that well next year okay???

4. Speaking of hockey finals, the NZIHL's grand final is coming up and they are crowdsourcing funds so they can stream the game live. So if you are pining for more hockey in your life, or you would just like to support New Zealand hockey, you should check it out. Also the exchange rate is probably favourable for you so when you donate you can feel like you have a currency super power! :D?

5. It's shihadchick's birthday! Happy birthday bb!

1. My housemate and I were driving home from brunch the other day, when a person riding a horse crossed the road in front of us. CANBERRA. How are you even where I live.

2. Also it snowed last Friday. Quite rare where I live! So I am pretty excited to have seen it. :D :D :D

Okay it's a crappy cameraphone picture of a tiny amount of snow. Still exciting!

3. Speaking of seeing things, I went and saw The Bourne Legacy last week.
I enjoyed it, and I've cut the rest for spoilers.Collapse )

4. Also is it just me, or does Jeremy Renner look a bit like Nathan Fillion? I think it's the eyes/forehead crinkling/smiles/way they get posed for our objectification.
These pictures sort of show what I mean:

And I found some where the resemblance is more obvious but I couldn't find a good matching photo for either. More research is clearly required! Oh, the hardships.

19th-Aug-2012 10:05 pm - AHH MY TEAM
This weekend wound up being quite busy but the best part was most definitely the Knights' game against the Northstars this Saturday, because they were AMAZING. They played so well, you guys! This is the team I kept occasionally seeing throughout the season and I hope they close out the season next week playing just as well.

My friend I. and I went to the footy beforehand (loved the aerial marks, and A+ to one of the Demons' players who did a most creditable backflip) but left early so we could get a good seat at the hockey. Just as well, because it was a good-sized crowd.

Newcastle started out strong in the first period and ended the period 2-0 up to the Knights, but the Knights were definitely putting up a fight. We were at full strength for the first time in quite a while and our defence was (unusually...) quite sharp. Our captain Rummukainen was on fire for this game, and was great to watch. And then, in the closing minutes, the Knights scored two goals in 20 seconds. Insane! Polaski was looking great and it was only a matter of time til he scored. (Must be the mullet.) End of the period 2-2, and you should have seen the Knights' happy faces on the way to the change room. ":D :D :D" is pretty much a direct quote there. :D

Second period was just as intense. Newcastle scored a third goal and then the Knights equalised. Both teams were fighting hard. Brown had some nice saves, and one rather scrambly one that had me on the edge of my seat: no idea how that wasn't a goal but the defence backed him up quite well there. #tearmwork Props also to him not getting in a fight - in fact he skated away and pointedly hung out by the bench until it was over.
So the period ended on a draw again, 3-3.

The third period was absolutely insane. Both teams wanted a win, and the Knights had realised that they can in fact play quite well and were really running their A game. And then the Knights scored! In the lead against the Northstars! The crowd went off their faces. They managed to keep their lead for quite a while until Newcastle scored again, bringing the scores to a tense 4-all. And then the Knights managed to score another goal... only to have it called by the ref and then waved off. wtf? This is the fourth goal in three games that the refs have missed, and three of those should have been the Knights'. I know the puck's moving pretty fast, but come on: that's one hell of a missed call, and to have it happen four times is a bit concerning.

Anyway, what can you do? The Knights didn't let it get them down and kept on fighting, and then scored for real with three minutes left on the clock. By this stage I was so excited that I actually forgot to breathe for a while there until I started going dizzy, and my heart rate was through the roof. The Knights took a timeout and then play resumed, and I really hoped the Knights would hold their lead, but then Rummukainen took a minor penalty (I can't remember what for) with 2:01 left on the clock, and the Northstars pulled their goalie for a two-man advantage, a move that paid off for them when they scored two goals, one with a minute on the clock and one with 15 seconds remaining.

And then THE KNIGHTS GOT A GOAL WITH 9 SECONDS LEFT ON THE CLOCK and somehow took it to a shootout. My excitement for this game cannot be textually rendered. Unfortunately the Northstars won the shootout, but it was such a close game, and they all played so well. &TEAM;! Hopefully also the Ice will take some inspiration for the finals from this as well. Show's not over til the fat lady sings, guys!

So yes, an INCREDIBLY amazing game and I can hardly wait for next week against the Mustangs. Sounds like they had another tense game against the Ice Dogs tonight too, so I hope they're really fired up next week and take the win. Go go bbs!

Watching the Olypmics:

- the breaststroke swimmers look like meerkats as they pop up out of the water
- I'm loving watching Australia's womens' sweep 8 in the rowing. Not only does it remind me fondly of my own rowing days, they're called the Motley Crew which is just the most perfect name for them. (Why they are called the Motley Crew is both inspiring and depressing. Anyway I am firmly Team Motley Crew. *\o/*)
- actually I am not that fond of watching the swimming (apparently this is a minority opinion)
- hopefully there will be some eventing soon? eta. it just showed up! aces. I like that they have themed jumps.
- they just promised to show the hockey in the upcoming coverage, so fingers crossed! probably they actually mean "at 3a.m." though.

And now, off to make cupcakes for my friend's birthday.
