TP? What's TP? That's what lets you cast SPELLS, see!?

TP Master, Chapter 1

TP, short for Tension Points (JP: テンションポイント), are a type of points used in encounters to cast spells or perform ACTs. TP functions as a party-wide mana system.

The party's current TP is displayed in a large meter on the left-hand side of the screen. TP normally starts at 0% and can be increased during an encounter up to 100%. TP is always displayed to the player (in both costs and the TP meter) in integer percentages, but internally it is a decimal value ranging from 0 to 250.

At the end of an encounter, any remaining TP is converted to Dark Dollars.

Accumulation

During battle, the party can earn TP over time, up to a maximum 100% TP. However, certain encounters may also have modified TP gain, such as the Darkness effect.

At the start of an encounter, TP is 0%.

• During Rouxls Kaard's Chapter 2 encounter, it is instead possible to start with up to 30% TP.

TP can be earned by several methods:

• DEFEND: DEFENDing grants 16% TP per character.
  • Darkness constricted battles give 2% instead.
  • The battles with Green+Orange and Flowery give 8% instead.
• FIGHT: The amount of TP gained is 1/10 of the accuracy score.
  • This means that a critical attack grants 15 (6%) TP.
  • Jevil(⅔ TP), GIGA Queen(3% critical attack, 1% otherwise), Hammer of Justice(24% regardless of accuracy), and Darkness constricted battles have modified TP gain on attacking.
• Items: TensionBit (32%), TensionGem (50%), and TensionMax (100%) can be consumed during battle to boost TP.
• Grazing: By getting close to enemy projectiles, TP is gained.
• Many encounters have fight-specific methods that also grant TP.

DEFENDing and TP items grant TP immediately, allowing that same TP to be used by other characters during the same turn. For example, if the party consists of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei (in that order), Kris and Susie can DEFEND while Ralsei uses Heal Prayer, using the TP gained from the previous two party members' DEFEND actions to pay for the Heal Prayer spell.

Grazing

Moving the SOUL close to enemy bullets activates grazing. Successful grazing is indicated by a white heart-shaped shell around the SOUL that slowly becomes darker and fades out if grazing is not continued.

• Pink Ribbon and TwinRibbon increase the grazing range by 20% and 25% (per dimension) respectively, additively if multiple are equipped.
• Each projectile has an amount of "graze points", which is the amount of TP that it gives when entering the grazing range for the first time. For each frame that the projectile is in the grazing range, 1/30 of the graze points are also added.
  • TP gains from grazing are multiplied by equipment. A TensionBow adds 10% and a LodeStone adds 5%. In Chapter 3 and later, Pink Ribbon subtracts 20% and TwinRibbon subtracts 25%. These modifiers are all additive with each other.
• In addition to earning TP, grazing bullets also shortens the enemy's attack duration. Like with graze points, every projectile has an amount of "time points" that it gives when first grazed indicating how many frames the attack will be shortened by, and continued grazing gives 1/30 of that benefit per frame.
  • Duration reductions are multiplied by equipment. A Silver Watch adds 10%. In Chapter 3 and later, Pink Ribbon subtracts 20% and TwinRibbon subtracts 25%. These modifiers are all additive with each other.
  • Duration reductions are disabled in the last 10 frames of an attack.
• Grazing is disabled during invincibility frames after getting hit.

Darkness

Darkness effect active versus Sound of Justice

In Chapter 4, TP gain can be constricted by Darkness, indicated by the TP meter being blue instead of orange. This Darkness effect is active against the Jackenstein, Sound of Justice, Titan Spawn, and Titan encounters.

In battles constricted by Darkness, certain sources of TP are reduced or prevented:

• FIGHTing gives TP equal to 1/26 of accuracy, meaning a critical attack grants approximately 5.77 (2.31%) TP.
• DEFENDing grants 2% TP.
• Most projectiles in these encounters have their graze and time points set to 0, so grazing is usually ineffective as a method to gain TP.

This means that the player has to use different means in order to obtain TP. In Jackenstein's fight, Treasure can be found during the different attacks, which grants an amount of TP upon collection. The Sound of Justice fight still gives 0.5/1 TP upon blocking a projectile. Titan and Titan Spawn's attacks feature Courage, in which the spawn-shaped attacks can be transformed into obtainable TP using the light from SOUL's shining mode.

Items that increase TP are unaffected by Darkness, making them a more effective way to gain TP in these battles.

Usage

Spells and certain ACTs require spending TP to use them. The TP bar is shared by the whole party.

Conversion

At the end of a battle, any remaining TP is normally converted to Dark Dollars and added to the total amount of Dark Dollars earned at the end of the encounter. The formula for the amount of money the party gets is , where TP is the percentage shown on the side of the screen.

However, the party does not earn any Dark Dollars after battles where the screen that normally shows the amount of money the party earned does not appear. This occurs for some boss battles and all battles at the Party Dojo.

Trivia

• The TP Master believes that TP stands for "Toilet Paper".
• Due to the unorthodox structure of the Susie vs Lancer battle in Chapter 1, TP earned in that battle is not converted to Dark Dollars. Instead, it remains accessible, and can be used to cast Ralsei's Heal Prayer in the overworld. This is likely an oversight.
• Though unlisted, it requires at least 0% TP to perform an ACT. If the party earns negative amounts of TP through other means, they have to recover their TP back to above 0% in order to use ACTs.
