NJ Governor to sign draconian gun control executive order

The New York Times headline screams A Novel Gun Control Strategy: Pressure Banks and Retailers. Gov. Philip D. Murphy, a Democrat, wants manufacturers and sellers to take steps to keep guns from falling into the wrong hands.

Novel indeed. ‘”The plan did not include many details” so says the piece and the executive order the governor claims needs no legislative approval. The operative sentence includes “more stringent restrictions such as convictions involving domestic abuse, among other red flags.” Among other red flags?? …Another requirement “an applicant must be of “good character and good repute in the community” in which he or she lives.

History of mental illness” Who is going to be the arbiter of that one?

How is that Red Flag going in states the have implemented it? Red Flag law turns deadly – Officer kills man

FERNADALE, Md. (WJZ) — A 61-year-old man is dead after he was shot by an officer trying to enforce Maryland’s new ‘red flag’ law in Ferndale Monday morning.

Anne Arundel County Police confirmed the police-involved shooting happened in the 100 block of Linwood Avenue around 5:17 a.m.

According to police, two officers serving a new Extreme Risk Protective Order (Red Flag Law), a Maryland protective order to remove guns from a household, shot and killed the man listed on that order.

But back to the Times story:

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — New Jersey will stop doing business with gun manufacturers and retailers that fail to adopt policies that go beyond federal laws, like conducting expanded background checks, to stop guns from falling into the wrong hands, becoming the first state to take such stringent action against the firearms industry.

The state will also apply pressure on major financial institutions, seeking information from banks that do business with New Jersey about their relationships and policies involving gunmakers and sellers.

The state, which says it pays more than $1 billion in bank fees every year, could use the disclosure requirements to decide whether to continue doing business with financial firms.

…..

Several major banks have taken matters into their own hands, cutting off banking and credit card services to gun retailers and stopping the lending of money to manufacturers who do not abide by age limits and background checks.

Now New Jersey has essentially decided to make its own rules to restrict the flow of guns, and officials said they hoped it would encourage other liberal states to follow their lead.

Besides expanded background checks, the state will also not do business with retailers who do not adopt similar policies prohibiting firearm sales to those disqualified in New Jersey, which includes more stringent restrictions such as convictions involving domestic abuse, among other red flags.”

Though New Jersey already has strict rules around background checks and people who are forbidden from buying guns in the state, Mr. Murphy is seeking to expand those rules nationwide.

…..

While the plan did not include many details, officials said that within the next 30 days the state would develop policies on gun sales that would likely be shaped by measures supported by gun control groups.

These include training retail workers to detect straw purchasers and requiring sellers to keep electronic records and perform background checks for private sellers for a small fee. (sure.)

……

Mr. Murphy’s action is likely to draw strong pushback from the gun industry and its allies, who have been swift to promise bans and boycotts of companies that have instituted policies aimed at the gun industry.

“That’s something that the governor’s office has to consider,” said Alex Roubian, the president of the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, referring to the possibility of a boycott of New Jersey by firearms manufacturers. “Because if they’re going to put police officers’ lives in danger because of politics, that’s on the governor, not on the gun industry.”

……

Mr. Murphy and the governors of 11 other states, including New York and California, sent a letter on Tuesday to President Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, demanding that they support universal background checks and so-called red flag laws to prevent people who pose a risk to themselves or others from buying firearms.

…..

While New Jersey has some of the country’s strictest gun control laws, Mr. Murphy’s executive order seeks to take on an issue that the state, like other states with similar laws, struggles with — stemming the flow of illegal guns into New Jersey.

FAKE NEWS:

Citing a study by the Brady Campaign, a gun control organization, the governor’s office said about 5 percent of dealers across the country were responsible for providing 90 percent of the guns used in crimes.

New Jersey’s plan requires retailers to take steps that exceed federal standards to “prevent, detect and screen for the transfer of firearms to straw purchasers or firearm traffickers.” (Ed: In other words, they will put gun dealers out of business by making it otherwise impossible to comply or prohibitively expensive and open them up to endless lawsuits.)

The governor’s office said more specifically that sellers could ensure that the name on the method of payment matched the name of a buyer; that online orders were made by the eventual gun owner; and that buyers were limited to purchasing one firearm every 30 days.

Mr. Murphy’s plan would also seek to prevent the sale of firearms to “prohibited individuals,” which as defined by New Jersey is a broad list. (Just a couple listed):

  • Is a “habitual drunkard;”
  • no permit to purchase or FPIC shall be issued where the issuance would not be in the interest of the public health, safety or welfare.
  • In addition, an applicant must be of “good character and good repute in the community” in which he or she lives.

Aside from people with a history of mental illness and those convicted of crimes related to domestic abuse, it would also include people convicted of any violent crimes and drug dealing, as well as buyers on a terrorist watch list kept by the F.B.I.

……

While Citigroup and Bank of America publicly distanced themselves from gun manufacturers last year, many other big firms did not follow suit, in part out of fear of a backlash from Trump administration regulators and conservative states.

New Jersey’s requirement that financial firms disclose their ties to gunmakers could provide the public with new and specific information that some firms have been reluctant to divulge.

Mr. Murphy is hoping that other states, particularly those with large law enforcement budgets like New York, will join his effort. Last year, Mr. Murphy and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York formed a States for Gun Safety coalition that now counts eight states and Puerto Rico as members.

……

“With this executive order, Governor Murphy is blazing a new path for states that want gun manufacturers, retailers and financial institutions to take action to help end gun violence,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “And we hope to see other governors quickly follow suit.”

Chris Christie raking in big bucks from Dems and George Soros

I hear the song “Don’t cry for me New Jersey” ringing in my ear. We can only hope this is the end of Chris Christie’s political career. For those who might shed a tear, here are a few posts from my way back machine, from a little blogger who cares a whole lot. It’s pay to play in New Jersey or you get your road shut down. No wonder Obama and he hit it off so well.

Chris Christie raking in the money from Dems – add George Soros to the list June 4, 2013 — bunkerville.

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie is cashing in donations from top Democratic fundraisers and other traditionally liberal donors across the country, even nabbing the support of a handful of rainmakers aligned with President Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a Star-Ledger review of state and federal records shows.

The checks are flying into the Republican governor’s war chest from all sorts of unlikely places — the hedge fund run by liberal billionaire George Soros, for example, and the politically progressive halls of the University of California, Berkeley.

The Star-Ledger review found:

• Five executives at Soros Fund Management have chipped in a combined $19,000 to the governor’s re-election campaign, state records show. The donor roll includes Soros’ protégé and chief investment officer, Scott Bessent, who tends to fund liberal Democrats, and Sender Cohen, a partner at the hedge fund who more often favors Republicans.

•John Doerr, a top Democratic fundraiser and venture capitalist in California, sent Christie the maximum $3,800 donation for the Republican primary this year. So did his wife. Federal records show the couple has given more than $1.2 million to national Democrats since 1997.

•Tim Mullen, a Chicago investor who gave more than $100,000 to Emanuel’s campaign for mayor in 2011 and bundled from $200,000 to $500,000 for Obama in 2008, has also sent Christie a maximum donation, as has his wife Alice. Mullen was already a Christie donor in 2009, state records show. NJ Star Ledger

N.J. turns away non-union power crews – Christie cut his deal

How desperate is hurricane-ravaged New Jersey? Not desperate enough to suspend a union monopoly that keeps the state in the bottom ten states for economic competitiveness (and #48 for business friendliness). Relief crews from Alabama who were specifically called to New Jersey found themselves diverted to Long Island, NY after they arrived because they use non-union labor. Mitt Romney and Chris Christie on Climate Change

At about 5.15 minutes in, it gets rare with Chris. He intends to eliminate all coal plants, and create off shore wind. Green energy coming your way New Jersey! Enjoy the view

“First, a couple of preliminary things. In the past I’ve always said that climate change is real and it’s impacting our state. There’s undeniable data that CO2 levels and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere are increasing. This decade average temperatures have been rising, temperature changes are affecting weather patterns and our climate…….

Just say oops or no to Chris Christie

Mark Levin puzzled by Ann Coulter’s bizarre endorsement of Chris Christie, who supports gun control, amnesty, Obamacare, and climate legislation

What is your great love of Chris Christie based on? The man supports gun control. The man appoints a radical Islamist to a judgeship. The man is for amnesty [for illegal aliens]. The man is, to some extent, part of the “green” movement. He campaigned for Michael Castle.

N.J. turns away non-union power crews – Christie cut his deal

UPDATE: WAFF from Drudge: Utility crew returns home after union paperwork conflict

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) –

The hurricane-ravaged East Coast has been receiving north Alabama assistance, but a Decatur Utility crew turned around after they learned they could not help in New Jersey unless they were affiliated with a union.

The general manager of Decatur Utilities, Ray Hardin, told Fox Business Friday morning they were presented documents from the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers at a staging area in Virginia. The documents stated they had to affiliate with a union to work, which the crews would not agree to.

Let me just say I for one never cared for Chris Christie. He never joined the other States in opposition to Obamacare . He has a penchant for appointing judges who are Muslim and have a penchant for Sharia law. I didn’t care for the way he fawned over Obama when he stopped by for his Photo-op. Especially when he made it clear he had that 1:00 am phone call from Obama. So we have another faux GOP politician that America will no doubt be happy to step up and support in 2016 if things don’t go Romney’s way next week. Enjoy your Photo-Ops Christie. I know you care. How do you like him now Ann Coulter? Here we go:

On Wednesday, while visiting cleanup efforts in New Jersey in the company of Gov. Chris Christie, President Barack Obama vowed: “We are not going to tolerate red tape, we are not going to tolerate bureaucracy.”

Unless, of course, that red tape is enforced by Obama’s union cronies. Then stranded residents have to wait.

Alabama is a right-to-work state.

WAFF-TV of Hunstville, AL reports:

Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can’t do any work there since they’re not union employees….

Understandably, Moore said they’re frustrated being told “thanks, but no thanks.”

With so much at stake–and lives still in danger–it would seem logical to tell special interests to step aside.

The devastation of the town the crews were to have assisted–Seaside Heights, NJ.

We can just bet that Davis-Bacon prevailing wages will be required which should add billions to the cost of reconstruction. No doubt a steady drip of the deals cut between these two fine fellows will be revealed in due time.

Obama’s perfect storm. As shock wears off, unrest and anger will appear

Eight out of 10 give Obama high marks for his handling of Sandy. The fact that he has little to do with the response of course is moot. Why post this poll? Because by Tuesday, the man who is taking credit for the great response to Sandy will soon find himself “unloved”.  I do not want to minimize in any way the suffering of those who are effected. It’s just the politics of it.

I suggest this will be the undoing of Obama. Most Americans are not ready to go through a tough time let alone losing their homes. This time, millions are enduring what is the unthinkable. A cold house? No electricity?  Where is our Government which has always provided. The man who takes credit, will have to take the fall. Shortages will increase- food, gas, nerves will fray, portions of civil society may break down. So as much as we would like Benghazi to break through, I suggest that this is the story yet to be told. The man unwittingly set his own trap. Who is he going to blame this time? George Bush?

President Obama gets sky-high marks for his response to Hurricane Sandy, which cut a brutal path along the country’s East Coast on Monday, according to the latest release of the Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll.

Nearly eight in 10 likely voters say the president has done an “excellent” or “good” job dealing with what’s been labeled a “super storm.” Almost as many give positive reviews to the federal government’s response generally. Even two-thirds of those who support Republican Mitt Romney in next week’s presidential election say Obama is doing well in this area.

N.J. Gov. Christie Freezes Spending

With State’s Budget In ‘Shambles,’ New Governor Slices Into School Surpluses, NJ Transit Subsidies; Dems Furious. Christie is doing just what he said he would do. Fiscal discipline. These States keeping thinking the feds are going to help them out– well, no. You cannot keep spending more than you have. Three cheers for calling out the unions. Now the local governments will have to follow suit. School districts, et al– you do not have to raise taxes to make up the difference, nor are you “forced to” what nonsense–cut back like we all need to do.

Saying New Jersey is on the verge of bankruptcy, Christie declared a fiscal emergency, announcing drastic cuts. Among them, aid to school districts that have excess surpluses.

“Today we are going to act swiftly to fix problems too long ignored. Today I begin to do what I promised the people of New Jersey I would do,” Christie said.

The move had Democrats in an uproar, angry the governor used his executive powers instead of working with the Legislature.

“What that’s going to mean is that those school districts without that money are going to be raising property taxes in the upcoming year to make up for that shortfall,” said Assemblyman John Wisniewski, D-19th District.

The governor also cut state subsidies to New Jersey Transit, saying it needs to become fiscally efficient.

“Revisit its rich union contracts,” Christie said. “And they may also have to consider service reductions or fare increases.”

ACORN Aims to Tip New Jersey Election in Corzine’s Favor

“ACORN is heavily involved in Gov. Jon Corzine’s get-out-the-vote operation, but is maintaining a low profile at the insistence of the Corzine campaign,” Matthew Vadum, senior editor of the conservative Capital Research Center think tank, tells Newsmax. “If Corzine manages to win reelection, he doesn’t want the victory tainted by his close association with ACORN.”  Direct from Acorn:

ACORN volunteers and workers have already knocked on 1.9 seiumillion doors in our communities, talking to registered voters in their own homes.  This coming weekend, and then again on election day, 11,000 ACORN volunteers and workers will be making two separate visits to 2.2 million registered voters in low and moderate income neighborhoods to encourage them to vote.  Over the past week, thousands of ACORN members in cities throughout the nation have also gathered together at neighborhood meetings and voting rallies to call attention to and recruit volunteers for Get-Out-the-Vote campaigns. http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12050

According to Fund, SEIU Local 32BJ, which is headquartered in Philadelphia but maintains an office in Newark, is “heavily involved” in the New Jersey gubernatorial election. The local’s political director, Peter Colavito, is a former political chief for ACORN, Fund says.

New York’s Working Families Party also has “moved into” New Jersey, he reports. The Working Families Party has very close ties to Acorn, an organization notorious for its labyrinthine network of affiliates.

Wall Street Journal columnist and author John Fund wrote Tuesday that “Plenty of reasons exist for suspecting absentee fraud may play a significant role in tomorrow’s Garden State contests.”

Fund also reports that the state’s Democratic Party is pressuring county clerks around the Garden State to downplay signature checks on absentee ballots. Without such checking, it is very difficult to detect absentee vote fraud.

A search of the http://acorn.org/ site shows that the organization has a heavy presence in New Jersey. It maintains offices in Jersey City, Trenton, Paterson, and Newark.
