‘More Regulations’: Division Emerges Among GOP Senators Over Bernie Sanders’ Drug Price Bill

While we can agree that most feel that drug prices are “too damn high’ how we get the government to “fix this” is another matter. Never let a crisis go to waste and the Senate has their eye on the prize. This time around the GOP are divided on a bill that Bernie Sanders has in mind and one can only wonder why. It is Bernie Sanders and we have known for years where he wants healthcare to go.

Back in 2019 I did a post on the intention of Biden’s minions and just for a refresher:

Biden on drug prices: ‘We will set the prices’

“Companies that develop drugs will have to go to the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) to be told what they’ll be allowed to charge for their products if Joe Biden is elected president,” the former vice president declared Wednesday during the Democrat presidential debate.

“My plan does cover everyone, number one. Number two, the fact is that my plan also calls for controlling drug prices. The biopharma is now where things are going to go. It’s no longer chemicals.

“It’s about all the breakthroughs we have with the whole — excuse me, immune system.

“And, what we have to do now is we have to have a form that sits in the HHS and says: as you develop a drug, you got to come to us and decide what you can sell it for.

“We will set the price. And, secondly, it says that you cannot raise that price beyond the cost of inflation from this point on.”

Drug Shortages in Great Britain – Coming soon with Obamacare?

Patients are being forced to wait for vital drugs – including treatments for cancer – because of desperate shortages of medicines across Britain.

Stocks of 56 drugs, including treatments for cancer, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, depression, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and epilepsy have now run low.

Welcome to the death panels.. I mean drug shortages. This is what happens when you get the Government involved. Trade deals involved?   One can only guess at the amount that the Government was willing to pay for the drugs since there have been major reductions in health benefits in Great Britain.

Here is the latest iteration of the government controlling drugs:

Now the from the Daily Caller:

  • Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders proposed legislation that seeks to regulate Policy Benefit Managers (PBMs), and is splitting support among some Senate Republicans.
  • The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), the lobbying arm of a conservative watchdog group, has launched a multimillion dollar campaign against Sanders’ legislation, targeting several Republicans in the upper chamber.
  • “We’re not sure why any Republican would support anything Bernie Sanders touts relating to health care,” CCAGW President Tom Schartz told the Daily Caller News Foundation

Some Senate Republicans are divided over legislation proposed by independent Sen. Bernie Sanders regulating the middlemen that negotiate drug prices and health care benefits.

Sanders’ legislation to reform Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), who are responsible for negotiating drug prices and health care benefits for consumers, seeks multiple regulations the middlemen must abide by, like reporting to insurance plan providers about services provided and prescription pricing. Some in the upper chamber’s GOP are supportive of PBM reform to cut prescription drug prices and provide transparency, while others, including a conservative watchdog group, argue it is an example of government interference in the health care system.

….

Senators like Paul, Romney and Ted Cruz have expressed concern over regulating PBMs, which Schartz commended them for.

“Different parts of the Republican caucus are all looking at this and saying, having a government make decisions about what should or should not be part of how the Pharmacy Benefit Managers operate, is something that they oppose, and they want to remind their colleagues, their fellow Republicans, that it’s just not a good idea to start regulating how they work,” said Schartz.

Paul wrote an op-ed in late July for Jobe Publishing, Inc. about PBMs and the pending legislation, which was forwarded to the DCNF upon request for comment. (This is an excellent piece by Paul and I encourage everyone to read it.)

Cruz, ranking member of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, also expressed concern over PBM reform in a mid-February hearing. The senator warned about the dangers of granting the FTC regulatory power against PBMs.

“There is now a serious effort in the Senate in particular to pass legislation that would start restricting how PBMs operate, which would have an impact on the savings of more than $1,000 per year for people that get benefits from PBMs. And it also is, as Sen. Sanders himself said, a step toward government-run health care,” CCAGW President Tom Schartz told the DCNF. “We’re not sure why any Republican would support anything Bernie Sanders touts relating to health care.”

As I said last month:

Reduction in the Cost of Drugs Begins – Welcome to the New Bureaucracy of Winners and Losers

Of course the argument goes: Every other government in the world negotiates prices. Why  can we not do it?

Of course the cost of drugs is too high. But if anyone thinks that taking this approach will simply be lowering the price alone, I suggest looking at what else is involved with this bill.

The winners have already been picked, and as this clip indicates, it is questionable how “they” arrived at these ten drugs. No one mentions as to “who” actually “they are” that did the choosing. The legal action taken by the drug companies include actions the government is taking beyond just the government’s negotiation of price.

There are better ways of reducing the cost of drugs that Americans are paying far too much for in comparison to other countries. For a start, why not require companies that no drug can cost more in the U.S. than is charged to other countries?

Reduction in the Cost of Drugs Begins – Welcome to the New Bureaucracy of Winners and Losers

Of course the argument goes: Every other government in the world negotiates prices. Why in the hell can we not do it?

Of course the cost of drugs is too high. But if anyone thinks that taking this approach will simply be lowering the price alone, I suggest looking at what else is involved with this bill.

The winners have already been picked, and as this clip indicates, it is questionable how “they” arrived at these ten drugs. No one mentions as to “who” actually “they are” that did the choosing. The legal action taken by the drug companies include actions the government is taking beyond just the government’s negotiation of price.

Recall at the time of Obamacare how the halls rang with this refrain? “The cost of hospitals is too damn  high’? Well Medicare took care of that. Reimbursement rates fell far below the cost of care. New Regulations were endless. Smaller hospitals went out of business or were forced to merge creating mega hospital systems. The days of the local family Doc doing his own thing were over.

If anyone thinks that medicine has gotten better since Obamacare, think again.  It went far beyond simply offering an insurance policy. Its intent was to force hospitals and Doctors into submission with vast control of the management of the hospital. But I have covered that ad nauseam previously.

I suggest these “simple negotiations” for ten drugs will wind up in the end, for Medicare folks being required to accept the drugs Medicare determines are “right for you.”  After all, the next round will be 15 drugs. Why stop there? A new bureaucracy has been born. A new panel of the wise, they will build their fiefdom.  Before its over, they will mandate to all what the “appropriate” drug for you and me shall be.

The government doesn’t negotiate. The government tells private companies what they are willing to pay. And private companies can’t say anything about what is happening in the “negotiation”.
And if you don’t agree with the negotiation your full drug program is taxed at a very high rate. Who will pay for that?

Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb joins ‘Squawk Box’ to discuss the latest in Medicare’s drug cost battle, as the Biden administration is expected to release a list of 10 drugs for which Medicare will negotiate prices, and more. 15 drugs next round. I can see this panel sitting around together, smiling as they rub their hands together. Ten years from now we will read their emails regarding this new nefarious activity.

Love that they conveniently left out the part where Joe asked if another round of shots dijour was needed and Gottlieb saying in hindsight we should have let natural immunity run its course.

Note: As discussed below: Large molecule drugs are made of proteins that are complex in structure and much less stable compared to small molecule drugs. Large molecule drugs are costly to manufacture and, at this time, can only be administered through an IV or infusion. These drugs have a targeted effect on tissues and are increasingly used to treat cancer.

For those needing examples of how the government works with Obamacare, here are a few wayback posts of Bunker:

Sebelius to unleash Bounty Hunters on Hospitals and Doctors with new edict

More chillingly, however, the administration is defining Medicare fraud down to include “unnecessary” and “ineffective” care. And to root this out, it plans to make expanded use of private mercenaries—officially called Recovery Audit Contracts—who will be authorized to go to doctors’ offices and rummage through patients’ records, matching them with billing claims to uncover illicit charges. What’s more, Obamacare increases the fine for billing errors from $11,000 per item to $50,000 without the government even having to prove intent to defraud.

Deporting Fentanyl Dealers in San Fransisco Goes Against Sanctuary City Status Says SF Supervisor

It is reported that there are 30,000 undocumented illegals in San Fransisco dealing Fentanyl. San Fran is considering that it may be a problem letting them remain to roam around killing Americans. But wait. There are those that think it is barbaric to rid themselves of this evil. We see the pictures now and again of this blight visited upon our society. This brings awareness as to the insanity.

This video brought it all home. Biden’s reaction says it all.

Here we go:

San Francisco County Supervisor Shamann Walton told San Franciscans this week the U.S. shouldn’t deport illegal immigrant drug dealers for selling fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid that was largely responsible for nearly 2,000 drug overdose deaths in the city since 2020.

“There’s been a drug issue in this country for a very long time. But there’s no way we’re going to stand by and allow people to say that one race or immigrants are responsible for these fentanyl deaths,” Walton said at a rally on the steps of City Hall on Feb. 28.

Walton defended the city’s sanctuary policies that prohibit city authorities from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in response to a proposal by Supervisor Matt Dorsey to add fentanyl crimes to a list of violent crimes the city uses for cooperating with ICE. Dorsey’s proposal aligns with a recent push for a crackdown on fentanyl dealers initiated by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

Canadian Children’s Book Indoctrinates Kids Into Euthanasia

Now children in Canada, our Marxist neighbors to the North, are giving their children lessons in bumping off Gramps and Grandma. Not only are books given to children, with the recommended ages 6-12 the process, it describes a bleak ending for those coming to the close of their lives with no discussion of palliative care. Known as MAID – Medical assistance in dying.

Anything to lessen the values of a a civilized society. A reminder during the halcyon days of Obama when the “death panels” were so aptly described. Otherwise known as the Independent Payment Advisory Board.

As we have learned with the Marxist agenda, the indoctrination starts young and in our schools.

Children are introduced into the medical killing fields by Canadian Virtual Hospice with its Medical Assistance in Dying Activity Book, described as being for children ages 6–12. In it, the child is taught how a person is killed during euthanasia:

The three medicines work like this: The first medicine makes the person feel very relaxed and fall asleep. They may yawn or snore or mumble.

The second medicine causes a “coma.” A coma looks like sleep but is much deeper than regular sleep. The person will not wake up or be bothered by noise or touch.

The third medicine makes the person’s lungs stop breathing and then their heart stops beating. Because of the coma, the person does not notice this happening and it does not hurt. When their heart and lungs stop working, their body dies. It will not start working again. This often happens in just a few minutes, but sometimes (rarely) it can take hours.

And there are activities for the child:

Activity: Draw or write about your ideas and feelings about the person in your life who is choosing MAiD. You can share this sheet with someone in your family or a health care team member who can help you with your questions,  ideas, and feelings…

Using blank paper or the picture below, decorate it to look like you and the person. Write or draw what you think they think or feel about choosing MAiD in the space around them.

The child has “choices” too:

Think about what different choices you have and which ones might feel best for you. First, ask a parent or caregiver to go through the list and cross out anything that is not possible in your situation. Then you can look at the rest of the list together and choose the things you would like to do or think about. There are no right or wrong choices, and you can change your mind about your choices anytime…

Would you like to spend time with them before they have MAiD?
• Yes
• No

Where would you like to be when the person is having MAiD?
• in the room with the person
• nearby but not in the room (another room in the hospital/hospice/home)
• somewhere else that feels familiar (school, camp, a friend or family member’s home)

If you are going visit them, would you like to bring something:
• to hold onto to help you feel comfortable, like a special blanket, jewelry, photo, or toy?
• to do to help you feel comfortable or to pass the time.

Are we preparing children for their own euthanasia?

A refresher from the past of what our Marxists are about here is the USA. Be especially concerned with the so-called Inflation Reduction Bill that Manchin appears to be caving in approving. The cost reduction in pharmaceuticals is fraught with the potential abuse in denying expensive drugs with a new “Independent Drug Advisory Board” being set up.

April, 2011 NY Times Paul Krugman cheers inclusion of death panels in Obama’s Budget Plan

The main thing, though, is the strengthened role of and target for the Independent Payment Advisory Board. This can sound like hocus-pocus — but it’s not. You have people who actually know about health care and health costs setting priorities for spending, within a budget; in effect, you have an institutional setup which forces Medicare to find ways to say no.

Recall our earlier post: Kidney Patients being told to accept death and forgo dialysis

”It was meant to keep young and middle-aged people alive and productive. Instead, many of the patients who take advantage of the law are old and have other medical problems”. Take advantage?

RedState, April, 2011:

I noticed that he took full ownership of death panels yesterday. Naturally, Obama did not call them death panels. He called them “an independent commission of doctors, nurses, medical experts and consumers.” But his description hits dead on with what his death panels will do.

According to Barack Obama yesterday, the death panels “will look at all the evidence and recommend the best ways to reduce unnecessary spending while protecting access to the services seniors need.”

Biden’s HHS Crack Pipe Distribution for Racial Equity: ‘This is Insanity … Crazy’

There is no end in sight for this lunacy says Marco Rubio. Whose bright idea was this? Hunter? Meanwhile San Francisco is allowing people to use drugs in an outdoor area of Mayor London Breed’s new Tenderloin Linkage Center. With just four weeks left in office, Mayor Bill de Blasio launched the country’s first legal shooting galleries, calling them safe havens for addicts — shortly before five people overdosed at just one of the clinics on opening day.

Add that Biden is allowing enough Fentanyl to kill all of us to walk across the border. Lunacy is too kind. Aiding and Abetting is a crime and should be treated as such.

The term “aiding” and the term “abetting” are similar legal concepts. But each has a slightly different meaning. Aiding a crime means helping someone else commit a crime. Abetting means to encourage or incite a criminal act. Although to abet does not necessarily mean that you help or facilitate its execution.

Both aiding and abetting are crimes and forms of accomplice liability. A conviction usually comes with the same penalties as the underlying offense.

(CNS News) — In reaction to the news that the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is funding nearly $30 million in “harm reduction” grants to battle drug abuse, funds that can be used to purchase and distribute crack and meth pipes, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said “this is insanity … crazy.”

“The Biden administration is going to be sending crack pipes and meth pipes, targeting minority communities in this country, underserved communities,” said Rubio on Tuesday in a video-statement on Twitter.

The Washington Free Beacon reported:

The Biden administration is set to fund the distribution of crack pipes to drug addicts as part of its plan to advance “racial equity.”

The $30 million grant program, which closed applications Monday and will begin in May, will provide funds to nonprofits and local governments to help make drug use safer for addicts. Included in the grant, which is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, are funds for “smoking kits/supplies.” A spokesman for the agency told the Washington Free Beacon that these kits will provide pipes for users to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and “any illicit substance.”

How are things out in San Francisco?

San Francisco Chronicle:

San Francisco is allowing people to use drugs in an outdoor area of Mayor London Breed’s new Tenderloin Linkage Center in United Nations Plaza, interviews and Chronicle observations confirm.

Francis Zamora, a spokesperson for the Department of Emergency Management, which is running the linkage center, denied the city was operating a supervised consumption site. San Francisco is working to follow New York City in opening such a site, which would provide medical supervision and clean supplies, despite its questionable legal status.

Three men with foil said they were glad to have a calm place to use drugs. Others were also appreciative, saying they could connect with the center’s services while taking advantage of a more private place to use drugs than the sidewalk.

Kayla Simpson, 28, sitting outside the center in U.N. Plaza, said she went in Jan. 18, the first day the center opened. While waiting in the fenced-in area, she said she felt the need to smoke, so she did.

“They were cool about it,” she said Tuesday.

Since the center opened, staff members have reversed three overdoses, the city said. But those overdoses might be the result of someone using drugs prior to entering the site.

Biden on drug prices: ‘We will set the prices’

Otherwise known as a totalitarian government point of view. Cloaked in wolf’s clothes. . Something that sounds good. Biden is the so called ‘Moderate’? All we need to know about one Joe Biden and his healthcare plan.

Companies that develop drugs will have to go to the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) to be told what they’ll be allowed to charge for their products if Joe Biden is elected president, the former vice president declared Wednesday during the Democrat presidential debate.

I managed to get through the debate to this point. Considering it takes about one Billion buckeroos to develop a new drug and years and years, this should work out swell. The simple answer is that foreign countries need to pay their fair share of the price of drugs including development. We need to stop subsidizing.

Biden made the claim while defending his health care plan against the charge that it would not cover everyone in America, adding that his administration would also dictate any price increases:

“My plan does cover everyone, number one. Number two, the fact is that my plan also calls for controlling drug prices. The biopharma is now where things are going to go. It’s no longer chemicals.

“It’s about all the breakthroughs we have with the whole — excuse me, immune system.

“And, what we have to do now is we have to have a form that sits in the HHS and says: as you develop a drug, you got to come to us and decide what you can sell it for.

“We will set the price. And, secondly, it says that you cannot raise that price beyond the cost of inflation from this point on.”

Narco cops told to stop arresting those over 40

When I first caught this news, I thought it was something from The Onion. But apparently no. So all of you city dwellers, run do not walk to the nearest exit while you still can. New York City, the next Detroit in the making. Look for the ads to go up. Wanted. Pushers over the age of 40. What could go wrong. Here we go:

The city’s narcotics cops are being told to stop arresting suspects over the age of 40 — a major strategy shift designed to target younger dealers, who are more likely to carry guns and use them, The Post has learned.

Top brass issued a directive that makes it all but impossible for cops to bust older drug suspects, in order to combat a spike in shootings — which are up 7 percent in 2015 compared with the same period last year and 12 percent over the last four weeks, police sources said.

The new policy was laid out in a May 14 memo obtained by The Post that scolded police bosses for busting people outside the 18-40 demographic — and demanded written explanations for arrests of midlife perps.

Division commanders who got that memo immediately ordered the rank and file to stop making collars in that age group and threatened officers with transfers and other discipline if they did not comply, according to multiple police sources. More over at the New York Post

Baltimore’s Freddie Gray, drug dealer with 18 arrests

So the cities burn over a drug dealer who, in time, had a good chance of being shot in his hood over his line of work. Look, if the police did something wrong let’s find out about it. The police risk their lives trying to give black kids a chance by cleaning up these parasites that prey on them. So here is the work history of Freddie Gray as outlined by Moonbattery:

Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore man who died after being injured while in police custody, had a lengthy criminal record before his fatal run-in with police on April 12, 2015. He had previously been arrested at least 18 times and had been in and out of prison since 2008, court records show.

One thing we already know for sure is that Gray was not an innocent victim, but a career criminal with a rap sheet a mile long. Only in a society deranged by moonbattery would he be running loose, predictably forcing the police to arrest him yet again. Gray had a lengthy arrest record with convictions dating back until at least 2007, according to the Maryland Department of Justice.

His curriculum vitae:

March 20, 2015: Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance
March 13, 2015: Malicious destruction of property, second-degree assault
January 20, 2015: Fourth-degree burglary, trespassing
January 14, 2015: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute
December 31, 2014: Possession of narcotics with intent to distribute
December 14, 2014: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance
August 31, 2014: Illegal gambling, trespassing
January 25, 2014: Possession of marijuana
September 28, 2013: Distribution of narcotics, unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance, second-degree assault, second-degree escape
April 13, 2012: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance, violation of probation
July 16, 2008: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute
March 28, 2008: Unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance
March 14, 2008: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to manufacture and distribute
February 11, 2008: Unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance
August 29, 2007: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, violation of probation
August 28, 2007: Possession of marijuana
August 23, 2007: False statement to a peace officer, unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance
July 16, 2007: Possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled dangerous substance (2 counts)

Be careful about sharing this information. When Pittsburgh radio DJ Mike Jax posted Gray’s list of crimes along with the comment “he was pretty busy before he was unjustly killed at the hands of Baltimore P.D.,” he was promptly suspended indefinitely by WAMO.

Bloomberg to restrict Pain Killers at Hospitals

While laying fallow these many days with who knows what illness, I looked forward to my returning debut as a blogger, healthy enough to be able to find some news that may have gone under the radar. So here we go. A story that sums up all that we are fighting for. The government loses its senses, and morphs into a dictatorship. Here is a prime example why we must not allow, cannot allow any form of restriction on our guns, and Ammo. Yes Ammo. Let me get to the point. If a non-physician can dictate the amount of pain medication one can receive, just think what we have in store for gun control, Obamacare, any of our freedoms. So I give you Mr. Bloomberg, who heralded the banished Big Gulp, now moving on to pain medication.

“The city hospitals we control,” he said Friday in
response to critics, “so … we’re going to do it and we’re urging all of
the other hospitals to do it, voluntary guidelines. Somebody
said, oh, somebody wrote, ‘Oh then maybe there won’t be enough
painkillers for the poor who use the emergency rooms as their primary
care doctor.’

According to Bloomberg, the over prescribing of
painkillers has led to a rise in violent crimes as well, as no-goods
have been hanging around pharmacies to ambush patients.

“You see there’s a lot more hold-ups of pharmacies, people getting held up as
they walk out of pharmacies. What are they all about? They’re not trying
to steal your shaving cream or toothpaste at the point of a gun. They
want these drugs.”

Of course, the city could allow people to carry
guns to defend themselves, but that would be too easy and would allow
people to be responsible for themselves.

Much better to ban medicine. Besides, where’s the fun of electing a liberal mayor if you
can’t leave sick people writhing in agony? Soda Head

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a total control freak. NYT reports:

Some of the most common and most powerful prescription painkillers on the market will be restricted sharply in the emergency rooms at New York City’s 11 public hospitals, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday in an effort to crack down on what he called a citywide and national epidemic of prescription drug abuse.

Smugglers ‘fire’ pot over the border by cannons

Just when we thought that any story regarding our border had faded from view, we have this. One has to give the cartel’s credit for ingenuity. A new way of getting drugs across the border. The picture below probably is a potato shooter, but a peek into the technology used. Oops, the fellows on the other side apparently didn’t show up.

cannon-pot-pneumatic

From the Atlantic Wire, via Yahoo:

Just when you thought drug running couldn’t get more extreme, U.S. border patrol officers find 33 cans of marijuana in the desert near the border that they believe were fired from a cannon in Mexico. Authorities caught wind of the new technique when they received reports of some strange canisters popping up near the Colorado River in southern Arizona recently. Agents arrived at the scene to find the cans which collectively held 85 pounds of marijuana. That’s worth $42,500 on the street. By the looks of it, the smugglers had loaded the cans into a pneumatic-powered cannon (think: potato gun) and blasted them 500 yards over the border. Bummer none of their buddies came to pick it up before the police.

This all sounds crazy, but it really does fit neatly into the broader narrative of creative drug-running schemes. Smugglers have long come up with interesting ways to hide their payload, say, in various parts of the car, and just a month ago, a Jeep full of drugs got stuck on top of the border fence in California, while literally trying to ramp over it. The smugglers managed to empty the SUV’s cargo before leaving the scene of the crime. This was only a few months after border patrol agents chased a single-seater go-cart ”painted a desert beige, fitted with knobbly off-road tires, and towing a trailer packed with 217 pounds of marijuana” through the Arizona desert. The smugglers abandoned the $100,000 or so worth of weed and fled back to Mexico, but U.S. customs got to keep the hot rod.
