Tariffs – Is the Economy a Zero Sum Game? With Limited Good?

“Over 23% of all the goods and services made since 1AD were produced from 2001 to 2010.”

MP: It also looks like more economic output was produced in the 20th century than in the previous 19 centuries combined.

Prior to about 1650 in England, the concept of economic development (increasing per capita incomes) did not exist. People over the past several hundred thousand years hoped to survive and reproduce, but there could have been no thought that they or their progeny would somehow achieve or inherit a more productive lifestyle. The change from hunter-gatherer to slash & burn and later intensive farming took place over dozens of generations so that people were totally unaware of the changes taking place.

The Theory of “limited Good.”  It is fascinating in its explanation of why Capitalism comes under attack.  If we move away from this primitive concept that there is only “so much” to go around, and bring to bear the concept that  rather than limited wealth, there is unlimited potential for wealth, we may be able to end class warfare.

The term limited good is a concept from anthropology describing the theory commonly held in traditional societies, that there is a limited amount of “good” to go around. In other words, the amount of good luckmoney, etc. available is held to be finite, so every time one person profits, another loses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_good

Bunkerville did a post on the topic in 2011 which included a thought provoking piece on “limited good” from The Logical Middle.  Here is a portion of the thought provoking piece. He goes on to talk about the economic explosion in the last centuries. The roadblocks for expansion of wealth.

Redistribution of accumulated wealth may be necessary to keep the peace in tribal and feudal villages. However, the social stigma against accumulation of wealth can be detrimental to economic development when a society is capable of increasing the level of per capita production. Unfortunately, the Theory of Limited Good continues to be a very powerful myth in modernizing societies, and is often the prevailing paradigm in countries just beginning the development process.

The term was coined by George M. Foster in his 1965 article, Peasant Society and the Image of Limited Good, “American Anthropologist.” The concept has been described by Allen as the rural counterpart of the culture of poverty. The Mexican peasants (in Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán) Foster studied were seen by him to lack interest in new opportunities because of their perception of the world as a “competitive game.” This led to a high level of distrust and envy and fragile and constantly shifting patterns of alignment. [1]  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_good  From 2000 years of History, a great time to live

The chart below is from The Economist and shows a “population-weighted history of the past two millennia” based on “economic output” and “years lived.”  According to The Economist:

Over 23% of all the goods and services made since 1AD were produced from 2001 to 2010.”

MP: It also looks like more economic output was produced in the 20th century than in the previous 19 centuries combined

Here is part of the piece on “limited good”   Logical Middle.

The amount of goods on this earth appeared to be strictly limited. One tribe could garner a larger amount of goods only by taking it away from some other tribe; one group or family in a community could improve their position only by appropriating resources from, or enslaving, other groups or families.

Feudal societies existed in Europe and Asia for centuries with no perceptible long-term change in the per capita level of living from generation to generation. The share of the population that was relatively well-off—mostly the nobility, military, priesthood, and a small cadre of artisans and tradesmen—was always limited to about ten percent of the total because it was not possible to extract a larger share of the food supply from the majority peasant farmer population through tribute or taxation.

Peasant farmers in feudal societies, and people in hunter-gatherer societies, had little incentive to produce more food than they could consume when there was very little of value that could be obtained for that food through trade. In feudal and tribal societies, the vast majority of people had no reason to even consider increasing production above that required to maintain life.

The amount of goods on this earth appeared to be strictly limited. One tribe could garner a larger amount of goods only by taking it away from some other tribe; one group or family in a community could improve their position only by appropriating resources from, or enslaving, other groups or families.
The absence of the possibility of increasing per capita production leads to the conclusion that one can consume more only when others consume less.

To have more, you must take from people who will necessarily have less. This view, or rather this reality, gave rise to the theory of limited good, that was the prevailing paradigm in feudal and primitive societies. If there is a limited amount of goods in this world it must follow that either all people will be poor, or a small share of the population can have relative wealth by further impoverishing the others.

But, objection to accumulation of wealth is not just pandering to persons who oppose the social and economic establishment.

Even among people who should know better, there is a nagging feeling that Bill Gates’ billions may be the reason hundreds of thousands of people live in poverty. Likewise, the large and successful businesses such as McDonalds and Wall Mart must be guilty of something—else they would not be so rich and successful.

Economic development—an increase in the per capita production and consumption of goods and services—is, for most of us, a mysterious process. How does new wealth come into existence? Where does it come from? How can it be true that we will all be better off if we rush out and spend our money on the silliness that Madison Avenue is pushing in TV commercials?

How can inadequate demand cause recession and poverty? Don’t recession and poverty prove that demand is already too high in comparison to the supply of goods and services? Doesn’t it make more sense to believe recession and poverty are caused by low productivity? And, doesn’t it make more sense to believe that if Bill Gates didn’t have so many billions of dollars, there would be more for the rest of us?

The story goes on with examples.

The bottom line is that we need to produce more goods to sell,  if simply intellectual goods,  and more markets for Americans to prosper. Grow our economy.

We have been essentially restricted or shut out of many markets, and countries have instituted their tariffs to make U.S. products too expensive to purchase.

We are returning to a primitive mindset that of envy of those who have much. A fertile ground for the Marxist ideal. The seeds of revolution.

Liberation Tariffs – Reparations for Rural and Small Town America

During my lifetime I watched my former rural piece of heaven with its small town wither away. Kids had to pack up and leave after high school unless one might get lucky and snag a minimum wage job. Mom and Pop businesses such as textiles crashed with all the imports that arrived, and the couple of decent companies moved out to Mexico or some such country. They fell like dominoes.

I caught an obituary of a friend’s Mom in the local newspaper this week and it documented the decent businesses that folded one by one as she followed them as a worker one by one during her lifetime. From the ribbon factory ending with her last stand at the Seven Eleven.

How this Tariff thing will work out in the end only time will tell. One thing we do know, what we have isn’t working. I’d say this is the last stand. Even more importantly, do we really want to be dependent on feckless countries, many who mean us no good, on the stuff we need?

I hope more folks catch Trump’s roll out of his tariffs. Here is a part of the beginning.

“American steel workers, auto workers, farmers and skilled craftsmen,” Trump said from the White House Rose Garden Wednesday afternoon. “We have a lot of them here with us today. They really suffered, gravely. They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories, and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once beautiful American dream. We had an American dream that you don’t hear so much about. You did four years ago, and you are now. But you don’t too often.”

“Now it’s our turn to prosper, and in so doing, use trillions and trillions of dollars to reduce our taxes and pay down our national debt,” he said. “And it will all happen very quickly. With today’s action, we are finally going to be able to make America great again, greater than ever before or. Jobs and factories will come roaring back into our country and you see it happening already. We will supercharge our domestic industrial base.”

For nations that treat us badly, we will calculate the combined rate of all their tariffs, non-monetary barriers and other forms of cheating. And because we are being very kind, we will charge them approximately half of what they are and have been charging us. So the tariffs will be not a full reciprocal. I could have done that. Yes. But it would have been tough for a lot of countries,” he said.

“For decades, the United States slashed trade barriers on other countries, while those nations placed massive tariffs on our products and created outrageous non-monetary barriers to decimate our industries,” Trump said. “And in many cases, the non-monetary barriers were worse than the monetary ones. They manipulated their currencies, subsidized their exports, stole our intellectual property, imposed exorbitant taxes to disadvantage our products, adopted unfair rules and technical standards, and created filthy pollution havens.”

“From 1789 to 1913, we were a tariff-backed nation. And the United States was proportionately the wealthiest it has ever been,” he said. “So wealthy, in fact, that in the 1880s they established a commission to decide what they were going to do with the vast sums of money they were collecting. We were collecting so much money so fast, we didn’t know what to do with it. Isn’t that a nice problem to have?”

More here with a list of the tariffs. Source

And with that we need to pack up and leave Europe. Wait until they have to pay for their own military and see how that goes.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that US actions would deal a blow to the global economy and urged further trade negotiations. Trump had announced a 20% tariff on EU imports, which will take effect April 9.

This vote of foolishness by the Rino’s of a meaningless vote since I understand the tariffs have already been lifted.  Good work folks. You couldn’t wait one day for this to shake out? You sure can wait on every other bill. It wasn’t going to go anywhere with the House not taking it up. Why did the GOP leadership allow this bill to go forward and embarrass the President? Just as the headline reads:

BREAKING: Senate Votes to Sabotage President Trump’s Canadian Tariff Policy With Four Republicans Casting the Decisive Yes Votes

A handful of Senate Republicans joined Democrats to vote last evening on legislation rescinding tariffs on Canadian goods, a startling rebuke of President Trump.

The final vote was 51-48. Here are the four Republicans who handed the Democrats an undeserved victory and snubbed the President:

Susan Collins of Maine

Mitch McConnell of Kentucky

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska

Rand Paul of Kentucky

As Fox News previously reported, leftist Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) sponsored a joint resolution that would terminate the national emergency Trump declared regarding illicit drugs and Canada. Trump has argued that tariffs are necessary to curb the drug flow and rebalance the unfair trading relationship between the two countries. Read more

Senator Kennedy and Nominee Shumate on Weaponizing National Injunctions

In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. John Kennedy questioned an Assistant AG nominee about universal injunctions used against President Trump. An excellent analysis on the issue. The hearing was held last week.

If you thought the GOP might be interested in attempting to put a bill up that would stop this nonsense think again.

Because House Speaker Johnson sent everyone home in a tiff yesterday. Nine GOPers joined the Dems to pass the Rep. Luna bill over voting by proxy. Why Johnson called it quits is unclear as two important votes were scheduled to be voted on this week. Even worse, Rep. Luna in this side show, totally over shadowed a hearing she put together yesterday afternoon concerning the Kennedy assassination which included heavy hitters such as Oliver Stone. YouTube has the hearing for those interested. Good stuff. Of course the hearing got buried with her nonsense.

Johnson Shuts Down House for Week After Squabble Over Remote Voting

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) canceled the week’s remaining votes Tuesday after a rare procedural vote defeat.

A resolution by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) to allow new parents to vote by proxy without traveling to Washington triggered the fight. Luna, who gave birth to a child last year, has crusaded to return Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) pandemic-era practice of proxy voting but limited to parents.

Opponents of Luna’s resolution, including Johnson, argue it is unconstitutional – the Constitution requires that a quorum, defined as a majority of House members, be present on the House floor while transacting business.

Other than that, the GOP continues to make a mess of it. Musk, Trump and dozens of others working non-stop and congress can’t get their act together.

And that is the worst of the swamp

Musk: Millions of Illegals Given Social Security, Medicaid; Numbers Shown in Breathtaking Chart

Musk confirms that illegals are getting Social Security numbers in droves. They are getting Medicaid. Worse, they are voting as well.

The Democrat narrative is a lie – “DOGE will make sure you get your Social Security, DOGE will make sure you get your Medicaid.” “There will be no cuts to legitimate payments, whatsoever.” says Elon Musk.

Musk was out in Wisconsin encouraging folks to vote, keeping the State Supreme Court in GOP hands to avoid a redistricting that could cost the House a couple of seats. Here he is from a tweet:

ELON MUSK: “Someone is going to be arrested tomorrow. He actually stole 400,000 social security numbers & personal information from the Social Security database and was selling social security numbers in order for people to basically steal money from Social Security.”

Democrats did give MILLIONS of illegals Social Security Numbers – They were REGISTERING TO VOTE – Elon Musk has confirmation THEY DID VOTE –

Democrats qualified illegals for MAX SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS – They enrolled in Medicaid with their new Social Security Numbers See graph in video:

“Then you’ll notice there’s a strange, what jumped out at us when we saw these numbers. We’re like, what is this? In 2021, you see 270,000 people, it goes all the way to 2.1 million and 2024. These are non-citizens that are getting social security numbers.

This is a mind-blowing charge. This literally blew us away.” “If I hadn’t seen this myself, I’m not sure I believed it. I went through it myself and mapped it. And Elon is right. This is true. The defaults in the system from social security to all of the benefit programs have been set to max inclusion, MAX PAY for these people and minimum collection.

We found 1.3 million of them already on Medicaid as an example. We’ve gone through on every benefit program we went through, we found groups from this particular group of people, this 5.5 million people in those benefit programs.

And then what was really, really disturbing us was why we’re asking ourselves why. So we actually just took a sample and looked at voter registration records and we found people here registered to vote in this population. Yes. Who did vote?

We found some by sampling that ACTUALLY DID VOTE. We have referred them to prosecution at the Homeland Security Investigation Service. Yeah. Already, already. That is already happening right now. The truly disturbing thing though, I just want you to know this, a truly disturbing thing to me, and the darkest thing about this, to me, the voter fraud is terrible.”

Here we have illegals confirming Musk was correct and how easy it is.

What we have here is a failure to communicate. Elon Musk is trying to steal social security??

Here we have “The View” watchers:

Trump’s War on the Houthis – Houthis Claim Attack on U.S. War Ship

While everyone concerns themselves with a supposedly private  “conversation” at the top level that included a reporter over “plans” to blast the Houthis all to hell, Trump’s war begins. The European news services have an interest. The American? Not so much. The Houthis damaged our war ships it is being claimed and reported by Indian news services.

Zero Hedge:

The US-led attacks have become nearly non-stop, with dozen as killed and many wounded on the ground, after President Trump this week warned that he’s ready to bomb Yemen for “a long time” if the Houthis don’t halt their drone and missile attacks on Red Sea shipping.

The US President hailed the Yemen operation, which has been ongoing for about two weeks at this point, as “very successful beyond our wildest expectations.” However, there’s been no signs the Houthis intend to halt their own attacks off Yemen’s coast and against Israel.

Al Jazeera has noted that “The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), which now has authority from the White House to strike offensively in Yemen without pre-approval.”

According to emerging reports of strikes which continued Saturday:

Meanwhile, satellite photos analyzed by the AP show a mysterious airstrip just off Yemen in a key maritime chokepoint now appears ready to accept flights and B-2 bombers within striking distance of the country Saturday.

The strikes into Saturday targeted multiple areas in Yemen under the control of the Iranian-backed Houthis, including the capital, Sanaa, and in the governorates of al-Jawf and Saada, rebel-controlled media reported. The strikes in Saada killed one person and wounded four others, the Houthi-run SABA news agency said.

Times of Israel has reported more on the above-mentioned airstrip as follows:

Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC show an airstrip now appears ready on Mayun Island, a volcanic outcropping in the center of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait off Yemen.

The images show the airstrip had been painted with the designation markings “09” and “27” to the airstrip’s east and west respectively.

A Saudi-led coalition battling the Houthis had acknowledged having “equipment” on Mayun, also known as Perim. However, air and sea traffic to Mayun has linked the construction to the UAE, which backs a secessionist force in Yemen known as the Southern Transitional Council.

So it appears US warplanes can now utilize a ‘local’ airspace under Saudi coalition auspices.

The U.S. has reportedly moved 4 more nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers to Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean. This brings the bombers in striking range of Iran and Yemen. That means a fourth of all the nuclear-capable B-2s that America has in its arsenal are now deployed to the base.

Tensions escalate in the Red Sea! Iran-backed Houthis launch strikes on US warships, triggering sirens in Israel. Is a new maritime war looming?

Department of Energy Puts on Hold the Biden Gas Stove and Home Appliances Rules

Just a year ago Biden was on a tear to ban gas stoves. The absurdity of the Biden administration shown in spades. Never thinking of the consumer, only the nonsense of some theory that this will save the planet. Anyone want to bet that perhaps getting rid of thousands of extraneous  government workers may put a dent in this nonsense? Let us hope.

Zero Hedge:

In 2023, consumer watchdog Alliance for Consumers calculated the cost of President Joe Biden’s regulations on appliances such as water heaters, air conditioners, gas stoves, and other devices. The watchdog found that these measures would cost the average American household more than $9,100.

In its decision to delay the effective dates of the three home appliance rules, the DOE said it acted in accordance with President Donald Trump’s Jan. 31 executive order “Unleashing Prosperity Through Deregulation.”

The presidential action aims to “alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens” and prevent the federal regulation from imposing “massive costs on the lives of millions of Americans.”

Bunkerville flashbacks:

So, it’s only the high capacity burners that will be banned. Where have I heard this before? Next they will come for the pilot light on our gas hot water heaters.

I will give you a hint. It may have something to do with the weight of the grate….

Good thing there is nothing going on in the world so that we can focus on these important issues.

House Hearing on Gas Stoves – 50 Percent of Present Gas Stoves Must Be Upgraded

This is Democrats highest priority right now…gas stoves. We learn that all appliances are up for review so it will not stop at gas stoves during a hearing yesterday. As promised by the old warhorse Gina McCarthy:

Gina McCarthy: “We’re actually going to do 100 rules this year alone on appliances.”

It’s easy to forget that just a couple of years ago, what was going down. Here is are a few golden moments of Tucker Carlson.

Jared Kushner and his Real Estate Developments in Serbia and Elsewhere

One can only wonder why Jared is mixing himself up in dubious relationships with his Affinity Fund and Real Estate around the world. His deals hit the fan this week in Serbia. Fortunately for him, his father-in-law keeps the press busy so this protest ranks low on the totem pole for now.  However in time, the press will sniff blood in the water and his ventures could cause big time problems for his father-in-law.

BELGRADE — After years of secretive negotiations and involvement from Serbia’s political elite, Jared Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners has officially secured a 99-year permit to develop a luxury compound in Belgrade. The current government was forced to admit its negotiations with Affinity Partners after an opposition politician leaked details of the deal earlier this year. (source)

The deal has faced outrage in Serbia, centered mostly around the building’s historical significance — in particular, that a U.S. company would be redeveloping the symbol of a Washington-led bombing campaign.

“The Government of Serbia has chosen a reputable American company as a partner in this venture, which will invest in the revitalization of the complex of the former Federal Secretariat for National Defense,” Goran Vesić, Serbia’s construction and infrastructure minister, said in a written release.

Serbia has not been stable. A brawl broke out in the Serbian parliament between the ruling coalition and the opposition over a train station roof collapse that killed 15 people earlier in November. This amid accusations of corruption.

Note from the clip below:

Thousands of protestors gathered in Serbia’s capital Belgrade on March 24 to protest a project by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The real estate development, funded by a Kushner-founded investment firm, has touched off a firestorm of opposition in the Balkan nation, fed by cascading anger over government corruption. Will Kushner and Trump cave or will demonstrators manage to fulfill their demands? Watch the video to know full details.

Middle East Eye

Kushner’s more recent interest in real estate blends a taste for exotic properties, adventure and geopolitics.

This is not their only venture.

He plans to build a $1.4bn luxury resort on Sazan, Albania’s only island in the Mediterranean and a former military base. His fund has already broken ground on converting the old Yugoslav Ministry of Defence building in Belgrade, Serbia, into a posh hotel and luxury complex.

Saudi Arabia is Affinity Partners’ main backer, with its sovereign wealth fund giving Kushner $2bn dollars. As of December last year, the UAE and Qatar have also contributed a combined $1.5bn to the fund.

With the Gulf money, Affinity Partners has invested in two Israeli companies: Phoenix Holdings, an insurance company, and the car leasing division of Shlomo Holdings, whose parent company, Shmeltzer Holdings, is part owner of Israel Shipyards, the only domestic shipbuilder for the Israeli navy.

In conclusion, perhaps Kushner may in the end create the same problems that Hunter posed for his father.

The Finance Committee October 2024:

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-M.D.) called today on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate possible violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) by Jared Kushner, son-in-law and former senior White House advisor to ex-President Donald Trump.

As part of investigations launched last Congress by House and Senate Democrats, Senate investigators have uncovered that since the end of the Trump administration through mid-2024, Kushner’s firm Affinity Partners has received as much as $157 million in fees from foreign clients—including $87 million from the Saudi government—while generating no return on investment, paying zero earnings to investors, and investing only a small fraction of funds it has received from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Public reports indicate that Kushner remained politically active throughout that time period, particularly on matters of U.S. foreign policy related to the Middle East.

Pennsylvania Special State Election a Shocker as GOP Seat turns Blue

It looks like an upset is on its way for rural Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. Trump had taken the district by 15 percent in November. There were two special state elections that took place yesterday. The House seat remains Democrat which was no surprise but insures that they will have the majority. But a major upset for the Senate District and let us hope this does not portend for 2026.

With nearly all votes counted in Lancaster County’s 36th Senate District special election, Democrat James Malone had a narrow lead over Republican Josh Parsons as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The county’s elections website showed 100% of precincts reporting, with Malone getting 26,951 votes compared to Parsons’ 26,469. Libertarian candidate Zachary Moore had obtained 480.

County elections clerk Christa Miller said she did not know how many provisional ballots still need to be counted, though she confirmed that there are some. Also, she said, overseas ballots could still arrive before the 5 p.m. cutoff on April 1.

The Senate Democratic Campaign Committee and party leaders like Gov. Josh Shapiro declared victory for Malone Tuesday night.

Malone had not been expected to win the conservative 36th Senate District. The district, which includes small towns, farmland, and burgeoning exurbs, backed President Donald Trump by 15 percentage points in November.

It has not elected a Democrat since being moved from south-central Pennsylvania via redistricting in the 1980s, though state Democrats have increasingly won voters in the region since the first Trump administration.

The seat was open after state Sen. Ryan Aument resigned in December to take a job with U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R., Pa.). The win does not affect control of the state Senate, and means Republicans’ edge in the upper chamber is now 27-23.

Stephen Medvic, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College, posted on social media Tuesday night: “Democrats just flipped a seat in a Trump +15 state senate district in Lancaster County, PA. Margin was less than 500 votes, and there will likely be challenges, but this is stunning.”

Meanwhile out Pittsburgh Way-

The state House district that was up for election includes some small milltowns along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and has been represented by Democrats for the past 60 years.

That win affirms the party will retain its majority in the lower chamber, at least until the next Democratic vacancy. Back at full power, Democrats lead the chamber by a margin of just 102 to 101.

With control of the agenda again secure, Democrats now have additional leverage in upcoming budget talks, as well as the power to decide what bills get a vote and which languish on the table.

Sources. Lancaster online   and Spotlight PA

How soon everyone forgets apparently. This will certainly put gas in the Democrat’s engine.
