The Human Body

This workshop is intended for 11 – 14 year olds.

The human body is an amazingly complex system that weaves together billions of cells to make us who we are. But how do our cells and organs work together other to keep us alive? This small-group workshop offers an overview of the body and the function of its organs. We will look at how humans have evolved compared to other animals, what happens when cells do not work properly, and the mechanisms of how medicines work in our body.

Students will learn about:
  • the structures and roles of different organs in animals
  • normal and abnormal cell function
  • the adaptability of animals through evolution
 Students will discuss:
  • the effects of various diseases on our cells
  • the mechanisms of different drugs and why they work (or don’t work)
  • the potential uses of stem cells in medicine

Students will have hands-on experience with:

  • dissection of a worm and a frog
  • modeling of a kidney through dialysis
  • observing and analyzing cells through a microscope
