PROGRESS: 24/31
Hi there :DD, I'm the host for the August Horror Hunt. It's my first (and probably last) time hosting, so let's make this a fun one! I only started getting into horror not a while ago, so this will be a great way for me to see what everyone's watching and check them out myself. Don't forget to tag your lists and reviews like mine so everyone can see them (# august horror 2022).
Even if it's not marked by Letterboxd as 'Horror', if you feel what you picked for a prompt is a horror movie, go ahead. And if for any reason you can't complete any of the prompts, consider it a free space :)
LET'S START:
(1) It’s the 50th Daily Horror Hunt! To celebrate, watch a horror film that turns 50 this year.
(2) This horror hunt wouldn't be complete without a tribute to the man, the myth, the legend who was born this day. Watch a film starring, directed by, and/or produced by Wes Craven.
(3) As a thank you to last month's host GirlWarriorX, watch a cosmic horror film. If you want a bigger challenge, watch a horror film they rated 4 stars and above that does NOT feature any trace of a human on the poster.
(4) Lake Mungo is the creepiest film I've ever seen. What's even creepier is that there's little known about the director, who's yet to make another feature film. Watch a horror film that was the only feature made by its director.
(5) If you're a dog person, watch a movie prominently featuring a good dog or a dog owned by the protagonist/s. If you're a cat person, watch a movie prominently featuring an evil dog or a dog owned by the antagonist/s. NOTE: if you don't want to watch a movie where the dog dies either way, don't watch these.
(6) Don't worry cat lovers, you can watch your favorite pet onscreen too! Watch a horror film with 'cat' in the title.
(7) My best friend can't stomach horror movies and is what you'd call a "scaredy-cat". She once made me stop playing music from Psycho because it creeped her out. Watch a horror movie with a haunting musical score that you think might scare my friend.
(8) Watch a horror movie from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list to help me burn through my copy of the book.
(9) Another important person in my life hates horror movies: my dad. So for a twisted birthday gift, you should watch something from his birthyear 1971.
(10) While making this list, I randomly started to crave bacon. And then, I thought of Kevin Bacon. Clearly, the next step should be to watch a horror movie featuring an actor with an edible last name.
(11) The film club I established in school explored Animation last month. Catch up with us and watch an animated horror movie using your favorite type of animation (e.g. stop-motion, 2D animation, 3D animation).
(12) Horror seems to be the genre where movie title makers seem to go craziest. Watch a horror movie purely on the basis of its title.
(13) The Master of Suspense is born today. Watch a horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock or a horror film that imitates his style.
(14) The Monster Squad is released on this day. The next day in 2003 comes Freddy vs. Jason. Watch something from the weird world of horror crossovers to celebrate this double whammy. BONUS: include in your reviews a dream horror showdown you'd like to see happen! Dunno the semantics, but Candyman vs. Carrie would be pretty cool.
(15) I, like last month’s host, am an avid fan of James and Chelsea of the Dead Meat Channel. As an antithesis to this day's prompt from last month, watch a horror movie that hasn’t been covered by Dead Meat yet (basically anything NOT on this list).
(16) Today is the death anniversary of a horror icon who was buried in his famous cape. Watch a horror film starring Bela Lugosi.
(17) Let's have a three-in-a-row doc smackdown! Watch a horror mockumentary.
(18) Now, watch a documentary about horror cinema or the behind-the-scenes of a horror movie.
(19) Finally, watch a documentary about scary, creepy, and/or disturbing real-life events (not necessarily horror).
(20) Another horror YouTuber I like is Ryan Hollinger. Watch a horror film covered in Ryan Hollinger's channel.
(21) Blade (based on the Marvel comic and starring Wesley Snipes as the cool, daywalking vampire) is released on this day. Watch a horror movie based on a comic book/graphic novel.
(22) Let's set a personal record! Take the oldest film you've ever seen (horror or non-horror) and watch a horror film that's older than that. If you've gone real far and can't find copies anymore, consider this a free spot!
(23) Women working behind-the-scenes in cinema is always a treat to see. Watch a horror film edited/co-edited by a woman.
(24) Suggestion with a twist: ask a friend/family member/co-worker/classmate/trusted Letterboxd mutual what their least favorite horror film is and watch it.
(25) The cool thing about horror is that it can intersect with endless genres. Spin this wheel and watch a movie of the specific genre hybrid that you get.
(26) Keeping with the 50th theme: Take the other factors of 50 besides itself (1, 2 , 5, 10, 25) and watch a horror movie featured on the lists of these months' hosts.
(27) It's time to face what you are most afraid of in this prompt. Scary movies rarely terrify me, because my fears are more existential, but when a movie comes along that makes me question my own being, you bet it'll keep me up at night. Watch a horror film featuring one of your greatest fears.
(28) Where I'm from, back-to-school season is at hand (sigh). To cope, watch a horror movie prominently set in school or other academic institutions.
(29) Today is National Heroes' Day in my country. Watch a horror film from the Philippines (bonus if it includes the Tagalog language or any other Philippine-based languages/dialects).
(30) I'm not exactly as well-versed as I hope to be in horror films, so instead, watch a horror movie featuring an actor from my personal canon. NOTE: the next host can use this list, if there will be a prompt in relation to my favorites.
(31) Thanks to Robert Berlin for letting me in on the hunt! Since this is the 50th, watch a horror movie they rated 5.0 or five stars.
