Following Fulci—Ranked | 🇮🇹 Italian Horror
"Let's get him!" "Let's show it to those scientists!" "Enough with archeology!"
Being harpooned by a naked ghost nun is the most normal murder in this film.
Syracuse is a beautiful setting. During the beginning there are some real pacing issues; it gets a bit boring in the first 40 minutes and I probably would have quit if I didn't know this was Fulci. But in the meantime, walking around empty sloped streets and running into drunk Italians threatening violence holds wonderful memories for me, so I spent some of the boredom in nostalgia.
But I knew the fun was coming because as things got more horror the pace and quantity and proximity of eye closeups increased. The intensity of eye shots predicts the onset of violence.
Very light spoilers below.
At this point Fulci goes straight to battle with his old enemy, the eye, with his favorite weapon, the possessed cat. You will want to look away when the cats come near the eyes if you're squeamish. At the same time, he is in the film in an extended cameo as an Interpol agent. Yes it is very excellent.
Once the eyes are vanquished, Fulci is freed to turn his attention to matching Phenomena in sheer weirdness.
This is not super scary and it's not exactly an excellent film but it is very fun. If this sounds like your type of film, I hope you enjoy it.
And it's Fulci. I love him. I'm going to watch anyway.
