"Hi." "What place is this?" "I'm Kaleche, and this is Kati Kati. And you're here because you're dead."

You arrive in Kati Kati not knowing anything, and you don't quite know if you should try to rectify that. It's a pleasant placeβ€”the vibe will be familiar to anyone who did a stint in a posh rehab. It's best not to ask too many questions; talking too directly about it seems to stress out the other residents, and fitting into a happy routine until you feel okay is what you are encouraged to do. You're in a safe space: you have what you need, and what you're missing, the camp has. But you can't seem to leave, and it's not clear if you should even think about why.

Kati Kati is a moody, engaging, and contemplative film that does a lot with very little. It's a very strong film for what it is. There is a reason it was successful at festivals and Kenya's nomination for the academy award

It's got a Beckett vibeβ€”The Unnameable somewhatβ€”and a strong Moorhead and Benson vibe. Imagine The Endless but really pleasant and possibly for your benefit, not a trap.

I love finding a film like this that's good and that only has 300 viewers! And I also love to get to see films like this from anywhere in Africa really; Saloum was great too. My only caveat, as you can tell, is it's going to seem slow. If you're good with the above, this is your film.

Enjoy!
