Book meme

Via unselko:

"Here are the rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. They don't have to be the greatest books you've ever read, just the ones that stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes."

[I *am* taking a long time to think about it.  Most of the books I've read have just been passing through my consciousness like bus tourists that left their cameras at home.]

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy thru to Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams, (which I'm not typing out but are nonetheless five books).
The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton
Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman

 . . . aaand I can't think of anymore right now. :P

25 Things Meme

1.  I like reading posts full of random synaptic firings on my friends list. :)

2.  I wish I could emulate that style of writing, but I feel I'm not very good at it.

3.  I tend to think in sentence fragments.  However, I often fail to notice it when I'm blogging until I go back and wonder *what on earth was I thinking when I wrote that?*

4.  My mailbox will soon be full of even more yarn.

5.  But it's a blend of silk and merino! And lace-weight!  I don't have any of that!  If you use sock yarn in stoles it may not drape right because sock yarn that drapes means socks that are puddled up in your shoes.

6.  And more sock yarn.  I like socks; they're less labor-intensive and time-intensive than sweaters.  My step-dad loves getting socks from me. :)  Mom says that they're back on his feet as soon as they're out of the wash.

7.  I've started taking a great interest in lace projects because less complicated projects bore me now.  Cables suck because they're basically a ribbed project but more annoying.

8.  Cables also suck because they make the fabric thick, so you will be too hot and look fat.  I not in favor of either of these.

9.  Sometimes I think that I like spinning more than knitting.  I can think and spin or listen to music and spin.  With knitting, I sometimes discover the next day that I have been knitting at random while in a media-induced haze. :P

10.  Do you remember that scene from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" where Harry finally finds the right wand after almost leveling Ollivander's with all the rejects?  When there's a glow of light and the music score soars and you can see that this is an Important Moment?  That's what it was like when I picked up my first spindle.  Srsly.

11. Do you ever think about what sort of iconography you might have on your holy card if you ever became a canonized saint?

12. I figure mine will have a spindle.  See item 10.

13.  And also a cat who is *not* chasing yarn or batting at the spindle.  Dora is fairly well-behaved around yarn in general, which surprises me.  I don't think she approves of spinning and knitting in general, however, because it means that my hands are not free for petting.  She tolerates knitting better because she can at least sit on my lap, even if she's not being petted.

14. Sentence fragments.

15.  I suppose if I'm going to both spin *and* get my very own holy card, I'm going to have to become a better contemplative.  Does singing along with the Travelling Wilburys count?  Prolly not.  :P

16.  A special intention.  I haz one.  I've been sending donations for prayer intentions to my favorite professional praying organizations  lately.

17.  U too, plz?  I haven't been able to really formally pray for a while.  The best I can do is spin in silence.  And delegate to professional pray-ers.

18.  I *do* remember to pray for my lj friends, by name, at Mass, tho.

19.  I have a whole regular list of intentions that I'm trying to mention in my head before the Sacrament melts completely.  After Communion, I pray like an auctioneer.

20.  Am I boring you?  I'm sorry, I'm trying not to. :(

21.  I'm happier now than I have been in a long time.  Maybe the happiest. :)   Despite the prayer thing.  Special intention!!!!

22.  I suppose I don't feel the need to post so much when I'm happy, at least not any angsty types of things.  Mostly it ends up being technical notes to myself.  I still read my friends list almost everyday, tho, even if I don't comment much.

23.  I'm so excited by, and terrified by, the future that I could just burst.  Special intention!!!!!!

24.  I haven't thought of a Lenten penance for this year.  I suspect I forgot last year altogether, but have no clear recollection one way or the other.

25.  "I got sunshiiiiiine on a clooouuudy day . . . ."   :)  Maybe I should browse for some Motown at Amazon.

Meme!

Via unselko:

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.
B) Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

I'm tagging prester_scott, dustthouart, dingodonkey, tenarr, arhyalon, elena23, spiritofjoy,  expectare, and  kalquessa.

What are your nicknames?
I'm new to the whole getting-a-nickname thing, since my name doesn't really lend itself to that sort of thing. I have, however, recently been dubbed "Babycakes", which amuses me to no end. :D

How do you style your hair?
With root lifter, a round brush, and a sense of dread. *Pleeease fluff up? Just a little? I realize that curls are out of the question , but even a vague waviness is a great improvement.*

What's the last book you read?

Canticle of Canticles, in RSV this time. It's a book . . . it says so at the beginning. *pouts* The last full-size book I read was one on how to make knitted sweaters end up the way you imagined they ought to be, rather than slavishly following pattern directions and being disappointed. (Can you tell I forgot the title?) The last novel I read was "Brother Odd" by Dean Koontz.

I've been having a lot of trouble with reading lately. Either I don't want to do it at all anymore, or I pick something up, read about 25 pages and never pick it up again. I have a whole bookshelf full of tomes with markers 25 pages in.

What colour shirt are you wearing now?
I'm wearing my Slytherin-striped hoodie. I didn't realize that I would be recording this for posterity in a meme.

Are you an introvert or extrovert?
An introvert that occasionally considers thinking a type of performance art.

Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer?
Internet Explorer.

Do you nap a lot?
I aspire to nap more than I do. My cat likes to join me in team napping.

Who was the last person you hugged?
My daughter, when I dropped her off at school.

What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
Aranzi Aronzo and their cute things. I am reliably informed that girls need cute things or they'll die. You don't want me to die, do you?

Also, dyeing and spinning yarn. It's a lot fun to dye the roving and then see how the colors will move and swirl together in the finished yarn.

What was the last thing you ate today?
Coffee bean fragments. The filter in the coffee maker folded in again, so this morning my coffee is the "pulpy" kind.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
About ten minutes longer than I think it could possibly take if I have to get daughter ready as well. Not that she can't do it herself, and pretty quickly if she's in the mood; my part is to encourage her to develop a sense of urgency at increasing levels of volume and panic.

If it's just me, a half hour less than expected, so I can get a little knitting done. Unless I fail to look at the clock in time, and find that I'm ten minutes late again.

Pirates or ninjas?
If these types of questions are not asked, the internet *will collapse*!!

Pirates! I have a theory that if a ninja was faced with a pirate, he would either get shot a la "Indiana Jones", or simply wilt like everybody in a "Pepe LePew" cartoon.

What's the last movie you watched?
"Barbie and the Diamond Castle". I haven't actually watched it all the way through. My daughter watches stuff over and over again, so I wander in and out, get food, do spinning/knitting, etc., confident that one day I will have watched the whole thing.

Do you like to clean?
No. I want a "Merry Maid". :P

What time is your usual bedtime?
Around 10 p.m. I'm supposed to be getting up at 5:30 a.m. Ish.

What kind of mp3 player do you have?
I don't. I'm not even sure I could identify one in a line-up of random appliances.

What is your favourite weather?
Bright enough to be cheerful, but cool enough to wear a cute jacket. Fall's usually good for that.

How are you?
Better in some ways. Broken in some different places for now.

Where would you see yourself in ten years?
Poolside with a gin and tonic, and ten pounds lighter.

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

12 Impressionist, 7 Islamic, 8 Ukiyo-e, -28 Cubist, -26 Abstract and 12 Renaissance!

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

Favorite Things Meme

Via unselko , who has assigned me the letter A:

The task is to list ten things you love beginning with a certain letter.  If you'd like to play, tell me in the comments and I will randomly assign you a letter.

  1. Avocados: they are delicious when fresh and not at all over-ripe, full of saturated fat and Lent-compliant. :)  Too bad they're so expensive right now. :(
  2. Angels:  it's fascinating to study about them as an order of creatures. (See the Book of Tobit.)  Bible stories are always more entertaining with angels because when one shows up, someone nearly wets himself.
  3. Antonyms: I actually use these to try to figure out the word I was *really* looking for, but has currently slipped my mind.
  4. Alligators:  But only if you say it like this: AH - LEE - GATE - TORS.  Pausing between syllables is very important, as well as unnecessarily stressing the consonants.
  5. Adams, Douglas:  Still my favorite novelist.
  6. Whitey, the albino rat in "Flushed Away":  He's so adorable when he's being innocent and clueless, and hilarious when he's pulling the other hench-rat's leg. :D
  7. Analgesics: because they are so very necessary to being to move after kneeling for an hour at Mass. :P
  8. High Altars:  I can't seem to take a table quite as seriously as they want to take themselves; the table-altars are like those belligerent short people that  are always thrown in for comic relief.  High altars leave no question as to What We Are Here For.
  9. Ambidexterity:  I can do some stuff with both hands but not enough to qualify. Still, it would be extremely cool.
  10. Ave Marias: because they make Our Lady so very happy. By extension, they also make Our Lord happy, because if his mama ain't happy, ain't *nobody* happy. ;)

Celebrating our differences

So, 3secondfish, your LiveJournal reveals...

You are... 4% unique (blame, for example, your interest in thomas_a_kempis) and 20% herdlike (partly because you, like everyone else, enjoy writing). When it comes to friends you are normal. In terms of the way you relate to people, you are keen to please. Your writing style (based on a recent public entry) is intellectual.

Your overall weirdness is: 43

(The average level of weirdness is: 27.
You are weirder than 85% of other LJers.)

Find out what your weirdness level is!

I am probably weirder than you.   :)

I wonder what I put in my journal to have a chunk of "peculiar" that's so big . . .

Your result for The Perception Personality Image Test...

NBPC - The Daydreamer

You perceive the world with particular attention to nature. You focus on the hidden treasures of life (the background) and how that fits into the larger picture. You are also particularly drawn towards the colors around you. Because of the value you place on nature, you tend to find comfort in more subdued settings and find energy in solitude. You like to ponder ideas and imagine the many possibilities of your life without worrying about the details or specifics. You are in tune with all that is around you and understand your life as part of a larger whole. You are a down-to-earth person who enjoys going with the flow.
