Mental Breaks (2008 Journal #4)

Ah! It's time again for another mental break. After this week, I've surely needed it. So, once again, here's a nice way to forget about the rest of the world - for a few minutes anyways.

Mental Breaks (2008 Journal Entry #3)

I've often said, in my journal, that I'm not anyone special. I'm just another person you somehow know, with no real significant thing(s) that I've done in my life to make it memorable.

This week's Mental Break falls nicely in line with that mentality.

Mental Breaks (2008 Journal Entry #2)

Sometimes you have to just need a break from the crazy world in which we all live and let your mind escape for a while. While I won't profess to have enough talent to that myself, I often turn the help of others who do. But, am I the only one who needs these breaks once in a while? I'd dare so, "No!" So, I'm starting a new weekly tradition on my live journal. Every Sunday, or there abouts (should I be out of town some Sunday), I'll be posting what I feel are some of the most interesting (and often strange) things that help me escape this sometimes cold world. Even if it's only for a few moments. So, please enjoy this weeks Mental Break.

Santa Moons Mall Patrons, Goes to Jail

Santa's going to be on his own naughty list this year after a man dressed as the jolly old elf dropped his pants in the middle of a shopping mall.

Richard Mullen, dressed up to play Santa, was arrested after allegedly dropping his pants in front of several onlookers. Oddly, he was wearing sweat pants under his furry red outfit, but that didn’t save his ass, simulated mooning or not. Police charged the 52-year-old man for disorderly conduct. He left jail on $200 bond.

Mall patrons were upset after seeing Mullen’s sweat pants; his antics caused quite a ruckus at the Mall at Rockingham Park, which is apparently the most up-tight place on earth.

Why is that?

Why is it that people feel somewhat compelled to make others feel guilty?

A good friend pointed out to me, a couple days ago, that I've not used my Live Journal in quite some time. Was that said to make me feel guilty, or was this merely an observation?

Personally, I don't like feeling guilty. In fact, I won't even buy Quilted Northern Toilet Tissue! Somehow, it makes me feel guilty knowing those three nice little old ladies are taking the time to hand stitch all those quilts on something that I merely plan to wipe my ass with.

Seeing the Mark from the Wyndham...

The View From Room 1601

It didn't occur to me, until now, that a great number of people couldn't see the Adam's Mark from their hotel room windows. Only about 15 percent of the rooms would have had the proper view. (Go me!)

Half of you would have had rooms facing the wrong direction. Likewise, about another 25 percent would have had rooms too low to see it, even if they were facing the right direction. And, because of building placement, about another 15 percent would have been at the wrong angle even if they were high enough and facing the right direction.

Here is the view from our room. Though grainy in this photograph (and much smaller than when you actually looked out the window), you can see the Adam's Mark hotel.

Keep in mind that the Adam's Mark was placed on top of a hill. (Remember all the stairs from the parking lot and driving up the incline on Monument Road?) Likewise, because it was the tallest structure in the area, the roof was a swarm of many antennas!

Post Con AC 05

AC 2005 WAS A BLAST!

Despite being able to see the now empty shell that was once known as the Adam's Mark hotel from my 16th floor hotel room window, I didn't miss the place at all. AC 2005 had a much nicer feel to it than Anthrocon has had in years! The very well laid out venue that is the Wyndham allowed for a much nicer ambience overall. The hotel reminded me much of the Omni Hotel in Albany, New York which Anthrocon (then called Albany Anthrocon) began it's roots in. (It even had a Subway sub shop within walking distance, for those of you in furry long enough to remember! *snicker*) You were able to see many of those in attendance, no matter what floor of the convention space you were actually in. The overall open area made Anthrocon not seem as large or crowded, once the registration lines wound down, to me. I didn't find myself bumping into people, having to move for carts, or waiting for people to simply get out of my way, nearly as much as I have in past years. Granted, attendance was down slightly from last year. Nonetheless, parking issues aside, I really enjoyed the Wyndham hotel that Anthrocon called home this year. With so much open glass and open space, I felt a lot less boxed in (or caged up, if you will) than I ever did in the Mark!

Being in Center City was a fantastic experience. There was literally dozens of places to get food, without having to drive at all. And, for those like me who enjoy this sort of thing, the view from the higher numbered floors of the hotel was outstanding! During the day, it was a beautiful spectacle of well thought out and interesting architexture. At night, the skyline was a breathtaking sea of street lights and lighted windows for miles. It really made the looking down from the Adam's Mark seem very plain, by comparison.

While I'd love to send a shout out to everyone who made AC so great for me this year, I'll only do so to the key players who really made AC seem special this year. (If I listed everyone that I spent time with, I'd surely miss many of you.)

SNOWIE: Thanks for making all the room preparations/reservations again this year. *hugs*
JAG: It was awesome getting to spend enough time with you to get to know you better. You were a great roomie and a really nice guy! *snugs!*
HAL: The OMG! He's Drunk Tour rolls on! Where to next? :o) (Pour me another!)
DATAHAWK: Your always wonderful company and manage to make me laugh. We actually got some time to hang out at this con and we were both on con staff! How does that happen? *snugs!*
RIGEL: For allowing me to, once again, be a part of what makes Anthrocon happen. I get quite the enjoyment out of knowing that I helped make the con fun for others!
DEX: For being your always entertaining self on Sunday night. We simply don't get enough time to hang out! *hug!*
WHITE FOX: For knowing the inside jokes that many of our friends, that didn't attend this year, weren't there to share with me. It was awesome getting to spend time with you again! We don't do it enough. *big hug!*
PERRO: For finding the time, in your very short stint to AC this year, to hang with the old school clan of DD. T'was nice seeing you again. Come visit Richmond sometime! I'll give your hat back. ;p
TANGO: Thanks for your help by being stage ninja # 1.
CREATURE: Thanks for your help by being stage ninja # 2.

There are many more of you that also made AC a great experience this year! Too many, in fact, to list. If I didn't list you, please know that no offense is intended. This is simply the list of people who really made AC 2005 a wonderful experience for me. (Including the hotel staff, who were just simply outstanding!)

That's it... I'm spent!

Not this time.....

TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP?

I say No!

Felt like getting a Blizzard from Dairy Queen today and did. On the counter I noticed 3 tip jars. No names on them, but one in front of each register regardless. As I got my $3.36 ice cream I thought, is this really something that tips should be encouraged for? I quickly got offended by the idea that they would expect, or at least encourage, people to give them a 15% gratuity for merely doing what I would expect them to do - their job. No one tips me for doing my job everyday. I'm not in a job position that I would expect tips. If I was giving people ice cream, when they came up to a counter and waited for it, I wouldn't expect to get a tip for that either. Am I wrong in thinking this? Seriously, tell me what you think!

Before you answer, consider this: I didn't sit a table and have it served to me, nor was it delivered to my house. I went in, ordered at the counter, waited at the counter to be served, then left the store.

I'm not saying that I'm being cheap. There are just certain things that I don't expect to tip for. Have you ever given an officer a ten dollar tip for pulling you over and writing you a speeding ticket? How about the toll booth operator? Ever given one of them a 50 cent tip for taking your 2 dollar toll?

Certain jobs mandate tips! And I almost always tip in these situations: Free airport shuttle rides to a hotel I give 5 dollars! They have provided me a valuable service! Hotel room daily cleaning services also get 5 dollars per night. I always get excellent room service too! All the towels and soap that I want. Pizza delivery and restaurant wait staff always get tips from me too. Do you tip in all these situations? If your tipping for ice cream, you damn well should be.

So, what are you thoughts? I really want to know!
I've come to realize something about live journal. Once I filter through all the things that I don't want to read (like everyone's view on politics, the drama between what someone wrote about someone else in the their journal, where this person ate for dinner, how long the lines were at Wal-Mart, how nice the weather was in a state 30 hours away from me, and my personal favorite Meme's)....

THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON TO READ, OR HAVE, A LIVE JOURNAL ACCOUNT!

I can listen to people bitching all week while I'm at work.

P.S. Feel free to "blatantly STEAL" this post! That way, everyone can read it 15 more times!

Sheesh *shakes head*

I think the convention atmosphere and sleep deprivation helped elevate it to the EPIC level it was that night. :)

No. I won't be making it this weekend. It's a bit of a distance from here and I have plans at Lake Anna tomorrow. Sunday is the Watermelon Festival in Carytown.

    Have fun though! :)
