I am authorizing the Portland Police to use all lawful means to end the illegal occupation on North Mississippi Avenue and to hold those violating our community’s laws accountable. There will be no autonomous zone in Portland.

Today, I sent this letter via email to @realDonaldTrump declining his recurring offer to aid Portland by sending federal enforcement to the city. portland.gov/sites/default/…

Burning buildings with people inside, stealing from small and large businesses, threatening and harassing reporters. All in the middle of a pandemic where people have already lost everything. This isn’t calling for meaningful change in our communities, this is disgusting.

Portland, this is NOT us. When you destroy our city, you are destroying our community. When you act in violence against each other, you are hurting all of us. How does this honor the legacy of George Floyd? Protest, speak truth, but don’t tear your city apart in the process.

Trump threatens to withdraw federal funds, possibly including health, education and safety net dollars Americans need to get through the pandemic and economic crisis. Again, he targets cities - including ours - with democratic Mayors, which he calls “anarchist jurisdictions.”

This afternoon I was made aware of concerns within the community that federal agents may be authorized to use live ammunition on demonstrators this evening.

ENOUGH. I had to leave Portland today because my mother is dying. I am with family to prepare for her final moments. This is hard, this is personal, but so is watching my city get destroyed. I’m coming back NOW. You will be hearing from me, @PortlandPolice, community leaders.

Mr. President, this is an attack on our democracy.

It’s time for the encampment and occupation to end. There are many ways to protest and work toward needed reform. Illegally occupying private property, openly carrying weapons, threatening and intimidating people are not among them.

Holding a press conference at 1 p.m. to address last night's shooting homicide with @PortlandPolice Chief Chuck Lovell and Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt. You can watch here.

Commissioner @JoAnnPDX and I are calling for an immediate meeting with Department of Homeland Security leadership on the ground in Portland and with Acting Secretary @DHS_Wolf to discuss a cease-fire and the removal of heightened federal forces from Portland.

I wish the President and the first lady a speedy recovery. We all should be reminded of how important it is to wear a mask and follow all public health recommendations.

This morning, @jaketapper @CNNSOTU asked if I believed the President was breaking the law. Not only do I believe he is breaking the law, but he is also endangering the lives of Portlanders. His actions are unconstitutional.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. This is what we’re all supposed to be fighting for. But last night saw more senseless violence in Portland. Another minority-owned, local business was destroyed by a violent group of individuals.
