The number of patients on mechanical ventilation in the UK reached 3496 yesterday, the peak in the first wave was 3301 patients on 12/4/20. These are the sickest patients in ICU, each patient needs one nurse 24h per day, 7 days per week. @ICS_updates members are there for you.

COVID Inquiry today: anybody else remember these days? Working ourselves into the ground ***trying*** to keep people alive. Certainly the toughest period of my career. NHS capacity isn’t elastic. People aren’t elastic. People break.

“The BMA has called for the reversion of the name of the role ‘physician associate’ back to ‘physician assistant’, to reduce confusion for patients and better reflect their role within clinical teams” 👉👉👉
Together with the GP registrars committee, we’ve released a new statement setting out our position on MAPs (medical associate professionals). We also cover prescribing guidance for doctors working with these staff. Read it here: bma.org.uk/news-and-opini…

Who remembers carrying one of these around the wards? 👉
The main reason for needing a white coat back in the day. I guess it’s all on a smartphone nowadays? #CheeseAndOnion

Christmas Day 02:35 - it’s cold and it’s wet and there’s no sign of Santa Claus but I’m heading home for Christmas although lots of people are still in there working hard! Merry Christmas 🎄 from @RoyalPapworth 🎉

It’s busy at @RoyalPapworth in @PapCriticalCare but everyone is pulling together to look after the increasing number of patients in ICU: thanks to the Surgeons, Cardiologists, Resp Physicians, Managers, AHPs & HCSs who worked as bedside carers on night shifts this weekend 👏

No, there is no such thing as a straightforward intubation in ICU
    Replying to @VirtueOfNothing
Worth sticking this here Who should an ACCP be intubating? Makes me feel uneasy if I’m honest. Not necessarily the tube as such, more the physiology, disease process and pharmacology Is there such thing as a straightforward critical care intubation

This is not normal. This is not a normal winter. This is not about 'beds’ - beds are just bits of metal and plastic - it’s people to care for the patients in the beds which is crucial @ICS_updates statement on ‘bed capacity’ and what it really means coming today
this is a really important point. Some are saying ICU capacity is often 95% full in any winter. BUT this winter we are making more and more ICU beds. and they're still full. This is not a normal winter.

Thanks to Isobel, Research Nurse at Cambridge Clinical Research Centre at @CUH_NHS, for vaccinating me against COVID19 today, frontline NHS staff are being vaccinated to protect us when caring for patients - this moment is a culmination of a global effort against the virus 🦠
